Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Ji-sung Park and Ryan Giggs will definitely miss Tuesday's Champions League tie with CSKA Moscow, while Dimitar Berbatov is a doubt after suffering a kick on the knee-cap in United's weekend win.

Wayne Rooney's involvement is also unclear after wife Coleen gave birth to the couple's first child on Monday. However, it's not all bad news: Darren Fletcher is definitely back having recovered from an injury picked up on international duty last month.

"Darren was a substitute on Saturday and will play on Tuesday," the boss told media at his pre-match press conference.

"I think most people recognise Fletcher as a big-game player, but we’ve been aware of that for quite a while. He's been missed in some key games recently so it will be good to have him back."

Sir Alex had less reason to smile about some of his other stars. Rio Ferdinand, he says, needs to rest, while Ji-sung Park won't appear on the pitch for at least two weeks.

"Rio has a calf injury and they can be troubleseome," the boss said. "If you don’t rest and give it the proper treatment then you can end up in the situation we’ve been in where you’re playing players in games when they’re not 100 per cent fit. He’s doing some good work and hopefully we’ll see improvement [before our game against Chelsea on Sunday].

"Ji [trained this morning but he] is still in recovery and won’t be involved tomorrow. We’re going to give him two weeks to develop his physical side. He’s had too many small injuries coming back from internationals so he really needs to do some core work. That’s what he’ll do over the next two weeks."

    Van Der Sar
    -O'Shea-Brown-Evans-Fabio
    Valencia-Fletcher-Scholes-Nani
    Owen-Macheda

Would be the team i put out. Draw would be ideal, win would be exellent.

Jaysus...a lot of injuries/possible unavailables there. Still, great to have Fletcher back, a narrow win I'd say.

I'd say he'll go 4-5-1, but in this case I'd swap Macheda with Wellbeck.

Why have you left Evra out? Is he injured?

Welbeck is injured. I left Evra out because he shouldnt be risked ahead of Chelsea on Sunday and Fabio was OUTSTANDING against CSKA last time out.

Considering the way Scholesy destroyed Chelsea last season, we'd definitely need him against Chelsea. Especially since Giggsy may not recover in time for the match

I'd be hoping Fletcher and Anderson start vs Chelsea. If we play 451 vs Chelsea I'd put scholes in there, but if it is 442 he doesn't start imo. We need the energy Fletcher and Anderson would bring. We're gonna have a horrid time in midfield regardless, but we need the pace and hassling of Ando and Fletcher vs Chelsea.

As for tomorrow, I would guess it will be a low enough tempo game, and given that there will be 4 full days rest between CSKA and Chelsea, I wouldn't say there should be any issues with burnout from playing guys tomorrow and Sunday

Chelsea are a completely different prospect in comparison to the games last season. Also, i reckon it is at least debatable whether he dominated Chelsea in a 1-1 draw and that he only played 20 passes in 90 minutes. (100% completion)

What game was that? Was it not 3-0 at home and 2-1 away?

As far as im aware a draw will make sure we get to secod round tomorrow night

Nope - 3-0 at home (with Giggs and Fletcher in midfield, no appearance from Scholes) and 1-1 away.

Draw tomorrow and we are certain of 2nd place at worst. Draw Wolfsburg away after that and we finish first in the group.

I think it should be youth teams in the group stages from here on. We've qualified and finished first effectively with one more win, and we'll get that versus Besiktas. Let the youngsters get a run out and let our boys rest. Only reason Fletcher should start is for match practice.

Jesus, only 20 passes in the whole game! For a midfielder that seems like very little. I know its in a completely different sort of game, but I remember a stat flashing up around the hour mark at the weekend and Anderson had completed 51 of 56 passes attempted in the Blackburn game at that point. Chelsea must have had a LOT of the ball for Scholes to make so few passes.

With regards tomorrow's game, is Obertan available for selection? I don't think it would do him any harm to get another game under his belt, he looks like a potential bargain.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,608 ✭✭✭Spud83

    Foster
    Neville---Brown----Evans---Fabio
    Obertan---Fletcher--Scholes-Nani
    Owen----Macheda

Should be enough to get a draw which will be perfectly acceptable result considering our previous results and the games left.

No need to risk O'Shea and Evra would like to make sure our first choice full backs are fit for Sunday. Same for VDS. Evans and Brown probably need game time.

Hopefuly Giggs and Valencia will start on Sunday so they sit out and Obertan and Nani come/stay in.

Anderson and Fletcher hopefully start on Sunday. Fletcher gets 60 for fitness. Scholes starts, while Carrick will get 30 for Fletcher.

Strikers. Owen starts for me regardless of who is fit or available. If Rooney wants to play he plays needs the game time IMO.

Yeah, I remember it being odd that Obertan was registered for the CL group games while Tosic wasn't.

United match all the way for me.

Though with multiscreen and that stuff on Sky digital, keeping an eye on the other games is easy enough.

Looking forward to see a bit of Akinfeev, if he plays in goal for the Russian side. Him or Neuer next summer, looks like.

    Wouldn't discount Adler.

Talented young keeper who really REALLY wants to play for United. Neuer seems more likely though, based on current internet rumblings.

AC Milan v Real Madrid will probably be a far better game, but i am really looking forward to seeing our fringe players get a chance, particularily Obertan.

you're right, and Adler's played for the national team already.

Wonder will that kid Dazogoev (sp??) be playing for CSKA, Chelsea expressed an interest earlier in the year.

Hopefully we can play with a bit of pace up front, them twins look cumbersome at the back.

I might chance the sky player on the Xbox to watch this tonight. TV3's reception in my are is crap, failing that I'll have to watch a stream.

I think if United put out (nearly) the same team as the Barnsely game, I'd be happy enough with a draw.

We've been through this in this thread - the poster was wrong. Scholes played in the 1-1 draw last season (and didn't dominate it imo) He didn't even come on as a sub vs Chelsea in the 3-0 game at OT. Giggs and Fletcher did dominate that game, but then that game will have no bearing on Sunday - Chelsea are a completely different prospect now.

Would have thought starting or absent. If he is available, he should be playing, he needs to get form and fitness back.
