My home club text me at stupid o clock this morning (at least they text) to tell me the course was closed due to the bad weather, although I wasn't playing there the other course I was due to play called literally 2 minutes after to say their closed too!

Any courses open today (apart from links)?! Hope you get better weather!

When i heard the wind and rain pelting the windows this morning i didn't care whether the course was open or not, there was no way i was going out in it! All that i'd have got would have been a wet bag full of wet clubs, a swing buggered by the wind and the sniffles.

South County was closed today too.

yeah it was so disappointing to see the weather when i opened the curtains, however i knew the weather was going to be bad but i prayed for it to disappear overnight!! Fat chance...went down the driving range instead, i was swinging all over the place:mad::mad::mad:

So i'm going to check this website www.winderfinder.com and book my round based on this forecast which is usually spot on!!Rather than wait till the weekend which usually a washout . My wife usually checks this website so she knows when to put the clothes out on the line!!:):):):D:D:D:D

What? I was thinking of joining there next year, their excellent draining being one of those reasons. Does it close often?

I'm a member there and it rarely closes because of rain. the drainage is excellent. Frost can be our enemy in the middle of winter.

I'd just be kidding myself. I meant drop it completely. I joined Dublin City last year but really want to move to South County next summer. My membership is up in April so I'll get in touch before that if I'm still thinking about it, thanks for offer though.

Went to dentist yesterday and was told I need root canal and a crown, €1800 :mad: I wonder how much for an extraction, who uses molars anyway?

If you are interested in joining for a year I know there are a limited amount of lease memberships which means you would only have to pay the annual sub and bar levy

The dentist's annual (golf) membership fee must have been up !!!!! :D
PS. I will do the extraction for nothing, just put on a Thiery Henry face mask :p

/Back on topic/ I played Fota last Saturday, it was in great condition. But I'm guessing not many courses were open today or won't be for a few days for that matter

got a text today that my course will be closed until Monday at least...two weekends in a row...ffs

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 717 ✭✭✭jimjo

Can’t see that many courses being open this weekend, although today was dry, the amount of rain we got in the last few days and then the amount were expected to get, courses will have to put up the closed sign.

Looks like a weekend with the feet up watching the boys in Dubai, wouldn't mind a few holes in all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,550 ✭✭✭Myksyk

Despite the flooding in Clare I got out to Lahinch today which was fantastic. Couldn't believe how dry it was (bar the 17th for some reason). Lovely weather though very windy on the front nine. played well too and came home with a hamper which was a bonus.

As ever an optimist leaving the house this morning I thought ah sure I’ll give it a chance, in the car driving and the weather got worse and worse, arrived at the course, stood temporarily out of the car to 40mph winds and constant drizzling, the type of stuff you think isn’t that bad till your out on the course soaked by the 4th Tee.

I than said feck it, not worth it, hopped back in the car and drove home. There was a few ready to tee off on the 1st too! Wondered how anyone would enjoy playing in that rubbish, doesn’t seem to be any let up, know its going to be windy hope its dryer tomorrow.

Lads, South County open today but would you want to go out in that weather?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,798 ✭✭✭Mister Sifter

The sun is shining in Dublin now. Very windy though so i'd say courses should be ok tomorrow if there's no more rain. Only problem is, the winds are meant to be up to 50mph tomorrow so don't know if i can be arsed played in that.

Played yesterday and have to say it was bordering on a waste of time. I suppose it was an experience and would make you a lot more appreciative when the conditions are calm. Oh yeah it was dryer apart from the mad shower we had on the last!

I was questioning my own sanity standing waiting to tee off yesterday morning. We didn't have any rain, but the wind was pretty severe. Very gusty.

I had so many layers on me by the time i teed off on the first (a usually driveable par 4) that i duffed my driver about 20 yards to the women's tee. Went with a three wood which went about 10 yards. Then a rescue which missed the green by about 30 yards.

Was in two minds about whether to just call it a day and head home, but decided to shed a few layers instead and duly holed my pitch for a par. Ended up finishing +1 for 14 holes and just found out that i won the comp with 30 points! :D

we played luttrellstown yesterday.have it booked a few weeks ,we probably cancelled only for its the only chance well have to play it before it closed.
the wind was unbelievable and standing on the first tee waiting for it to die down that little bit to hit my first drive would make you wonder were we mad been out atall.as jimjo said i would make you appreciate the calmer days alot more

Funny that, I was going to play luttrellstown on Friday but chickened out, reckoned it would be too wet a day. So is it still in good nick? Granted it cant be perfect with all this wet weather. Really want to play the course before the gates close, but it may be hard to find the time, plus i really want to fit in Lough Erne sometime soon.

It truly is a pity to loose such a great course.

yea the 5th is a good hole but how it holds the index 2 rating is beyond me. But ths nothing compared to the index 1 hole.....the 17th???:confused: how the hell is the 17th classed as index 1??

Either way I will play it a few more times b4 it closes.

it was in very good nick considering all the rain..the only places that it was muddy was walking away from some of the tee boxes...would love to try to go back again before it closes but its doubtful.
would love to play lough erne again lets hope they drop their green fees

Licksy had an excellent post here a few weeks ago explaining how holes are indexed, you should do a search for it. Index 1 is not always the hardest hole.

For some reason I find it hard to pick the hardest hole..... I just find it a fairly easy going course. Think the 12th could be made into the hardest with the placing of a few bunkers to protect the green:eek:, but we know tht wont happen. I like the layout of the short par 3 15th.....As it protected very wll and raised too..... anything even slightly short and your in a world of trouble.

Maybe the index 2 5th could be a contender!!!

Would welcome any opinions from anyone who could choose a beter index 1 than the 17th.

personally i think the 5th is hardest.i agree bout the 12th although if i was to ask the few four balls playing in front of us they prob would say the 17th was tough.alot of the lads i saw were in trouble amongst the trees on the left and out to the right aswell.seen a few of them hit the trees with their second shot.
i remember some of licksy post about the index 1 not being the hardest holes it was more to do with matchplay and having all the low index holes
spread out over the course although i cant rightly remember it exactly:o

Played Turvey yesterday and the course really should have been closed. There was surface water absolutly everywhere and you wern't allowed to hit off the fairway, you had to hit from the rough at the side of the fairway as the fairways were waterlogged for the most part. Its sad to see, because if a course is in such a bad way they really should close for a few days but I guess Turvey need the money more than most. That said, the greens were absolutly fine. Not one bit soggy. Im sure the majority of Dublins courses were the exact same after the weather we've had but many would have the luxury of being able to afford to close for a few days which really is whats needed.

Licksy was kind enuf to put a link for the index post up and i see the logic behind the choosing/placing of the index for each hole.... Looked at the card and its basically low high L H L H L H H L H H L L H H L L in relation to index. Fairly tough finish with an index 1 and 5:eek:.

In saying all tht I still find it an easy going course:D or is it just me? lol
Hope I still find it as easy on my next outing.... hope to play atleast twice more b4 it closes, gona try make our final game of the year there...... so we can enjoy the course and splendid clubhouse afterwards for one last time.

Oh anyone ever used the phone on the 7th to order food or drinks b4 the 10th??:cool: great little feature.

Got out and played 18 this morning. The course was in fine condition, only wet in patches. Although very cold I thought it was perfect conditions for this time of year, no wind and no real blaring sun (the type you cant follow the flight of a tee shot), within saying this I really have to buy a pair of mittens, hands nearly go numb in between shots
