    great news this is.

but i'm still going to wait until the dev-team release their unlock. purely because i've always used dev-team and geohot always seems to release a windows program first then mac couple weeks later, whereas with dev-team it's mac first then windows.

I take your point and alot of people feel the same for other reasons saying that GEOHOT releases are a little unstable etc .
The same people forget the Goehot always releases his products as a Beta and it's usually 2nd/3rd release is the finished product.
You have to hand it to this kid but , he is on his early 20,s and and this point in time is the only one who can now offer a jailbreak & unlock for a device on 3.1.2 regardless of baseband or bootrom. Pretty minblowing to me seen he is defeating or holding back Apple at every turn.

    M.
P.s Apoligies for turning this thread into the Geohot fan club page.

Fairplay to Geohot, as a PC user The DevTeam don't suit me :p they also take their time with PC versions..

Mixed nuts, I think he is actually only 20.. The kid's a genius.

    Legend!

I'm currently on 3.0 but I've done a fresh install of Win7 and my new itunes install is only giving me the option of restoring to 3.1.2 which untill now was not an option.

Apple should just hire the lad.... ( I hope they don't obviously!)

is blackrain still a tethered jailbreak ,?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,117 ✭✭✭✭Leiva

Only if you have the latest Bootrom (359.3.2) , if you have the older bootrom
then Blackra1n does not need to be tethered after the phone as been powered down.

    To check your bootrom ...

Put your phone into DFU Mode .
    or
Check the 4th & 5th digits of the box serial number ... if they are pre week "40" (week of manu) you should be ok and not need to tether.

im week 36 but if upgrade to 3.1.2 will that not update the bootroom ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,117 ✭✭✭✭Leiva

The bootrom does not get upgraded via iTunes.

Before you do goto 3.1.2 :

    Whats your current firmware ?
    Are you currently JB ?
Are you using a unlock for another network ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭Simon201

Unlock being released at 5pm today now according to iClarified! Yay!

    firmware 3.0.1
    jb with redsn0w
    ultrasn0w to unlock

    firmware 3.0.1
    jb with redsn0w
    ultrasn0w to unlock

Perfect setup , same as myself (bar the unlock , I have a factory unlocked)

Why change ? are you after something that only runs on 3.1 ?

I am sitting tight until the next major firmware .

I have a jailbroken phone from the north currently on 3.0 is it safe for me to jailbreak and unlock with blacksnOw?
I know it will work now but is there any risk of not being to unlock in the future?
    thanks

    PartyPiper ,

It has been confirmed that Blackra1n RC3 will NOT resolve the need to tether for re-jailbreaking (if phone is powered off or app crashes)

So if you have a phone made after week 39 and has bootrom 359.3.2 you will need to connect it to our computer to rejailbreak if its powered off or crashes .

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 63 ✭✭partypiper

    thanks mixednuts

    now just one more thing:

if i bought a secondhand iphone 3GS that was bought at launch or lets say was definetly not one of the lastest week 39 phones.

Is there anyway that the previous owner could have updated the bootrom to 359.3.2

it is possible that the owner of the phone upgraded the firmware. just ask what version the modem firmware is.

Ok.. so my jailbroken 3G iPhone 8gb is running on 3.0.1... loads of apps I don't wanna lose... So the course of action would be.. back up all on iTunes... update the firmware (losing the jailbreak) re-jailbreak it and then sync phone again with iTunes and I will be have all my apps etc back? Is this correct?

    (Windows XP)

You will have your iTunes app store apps but your Cydia apps will be gone.

    Party,

The bootrom cannot be updated via iTunes so i doubt if the previous owner would have had the ability or mistake to update the bootrom .

If the phone was sent back to Apple for repair , maybe ?

Ask the question , did it ever go back to Apple for repair ?
If not you should be O.K

All your iTunes Apps will be easy to get back onto the phone when you re-Sync.

For all your Cydia Apps use "Aptbackup" from Cydia.
This App will take a snap shot of all your Cydia Apps by pressing "backup" (it will not copy them) .
It stores all the info for your Cydia Apps in a non-volatile area on your phone which wont be wiped on a restore or firmware update .
When you need all your Cydia Apps back you simply go back to Cydia , download "Aptbackup" again hit "restore" and it finds this saved file and lets you simply download all the Apps again (from Cydia)

I have never had a chance to use this (yet) but others have and say it works a treat.

    Hope this Helps.
    M

(p.s)I dont know if you can talk about cracked Apps so be careful .

    Morning,

Ran blackra1n on a 3.1.2 and jailbroke it, ran blacksn0w and unlocked it worked perfect. As many guides say wireless may not work so had to do a reset of network settings and then reboot and then worked fine.

does blacksnow fix the thing when you hard reboot your iphone (or an app crashed), you have to rejailbreak your iphone?

    @mixednuts
i used aptbackup before 3.0 but it didnt work after i upgraded to 3.0. is it now compatible with 3.0 and up?

Just to confirm (for my own benefit) Aptbackup will work if you ran a backup on a phone 3.0 or higher ?

I dont think so.It only works on firmwares before 3.0. Havent checked if they already updated it to work on 3.0 and up

yes it will. if the iphone was jailbroken, you have to rejailbreak it again (and unlock if you have to). it will wipe out all the data in the iphone including his contacts and apps and music etc.

Jailbreaking is a process that allows iPhone and iPod Touch users to run unofficial code on their devices bypassing Apple's official distribution mechanism, the App Store. Once jailbroken, iPhone users are able to download many applications previously unavailable through the App Store via unofficial installers such as Cydia and Icy. Cydia app store founder Jay Freeman estimates that 4 million (out of 40 million) iPods and iPhones are jailbroken.[1]

Jailbreaking is distinct from unlocking, which is the process by which a mobile device is made compatible with telephone networks with which it was not specifically licensed to be used.
