    Hey lads,

I wonder if anyone can reccomend a good pair of boots for the outdoors. My current pair are great, L.L Bean boots that I got a few years ago from the US.

Im looking for basically a pair of boots that are well over the ankle, waterproof, gortex/leather and lace up. Ones that are tough enough to put up with all sorts of terrain.

Are there any UK or Irish websites selling hunting clothing?

    Thanks.

I use Meindl Makalus MFS and Glockners, great boots, durable, completely waterproof and also found that it does not take long to break them in.

you can buy them in great outdoors.

Bought a pair of Danner Pronghorn from the states, straight out of the box and across the fields, no breaking in required. http://www.shoebuy.com/danner-pronghorn-gtx-8/53389/53389

MEINDL boots are the best on the market. have a look at the vakuum it has the MFS ..about 200 euro.
a guy i know uses them and there is no one in the country that does as much stalking and walking as this man .he swears by them.

i have a pair of himalayas about 275 euro. there in there 4th season of heavy going ,mostly on the granite hills of wicklow.
there still water proof no rips or splits.
iv used lowa the sole warped on one of them.

i also used the le chameau mouflon about 260 euro ,there a soft boot did not get value out of them.

the out door shop in wexford has the vakuum coming in shortly il buy a pair to try them.

yeah good thread as I am now looking for a new pair, I have had Han Wags for the last 5 years and cant fault them in any way. They are still 100% waterproof and work perfectly. The toes of them have been cut up as you would expect but it hasnt effected the performance of them at all. I have used these for a lot of hunting of all descriptions and a lot of fishing which requires me standing in the water etc and never once let in water. that said these are 5 years old and i need to get a new pair.

I have heard some negative reports on the Meindl about leaking in water etc so is this all rubbish ??

Thanks for all the answers. As far as i am concerned, a good set of boots are the most important item of clothing when out in the woods.

Ive always used Chameau Mouflon when I was gamekeeping and found them great, got two seasons hard going but then changed to Meindl and never looked back.. The Chameau are a great boot but not as hard wearing or as supportive as the Meindl. Either of them will not disappoint. Like everything you get what you pay for with boots so buy something decent and mind them. NikWax do very good care kits for goretex boots.

best boots ive ever bought are mendil army pro ;). their very high so dont suit everyone but theres a lower version called the army gore. i put mine through everything you could think of and it still took me 4 years to destroy them.......and all they really need is a sole change to be useable again. haix boots are decent eneough aswell

Thanks for the replies, looks like its going to be the Meindl Taiga GTX or the Dovre Extreme. They look like super boots and i suppose if there is any water leaking problems i can bring them back.

They discontinued their range of boots that i liked. I bought 2 pairs at about $300 each a few years ago. The dog got to one pair quite early but the second pair have served me well out in the forests almost every day for the past 4 years.
Their new boots simply dont look like they are up for the job, more for light hiking and looking good.

Does anyone own a pair of Dubarry Galway boots? These are gortex lined and have a good hardwearing sole and heel

If you want to break your ankle they are probably ideal.
I like laceup boots because you get better ankle support, those Dubes might as well be wearing a pair of wellies, Expensive wellies mind you!

Sorry to hi jack the thread

Im in the market for new wellies forl ow land stalking

Im prepared to spend 100- 150

How do boots that people are advocating compare against wellies

Alot of the posts are talking water proof

How water proof are they ???

If i cross a river shallow stream or sink them into a sticky marsh will i get trotters or not ?

I wear boots simply because they offer much more ankle support than wellies, on the terrain i am on, indeed any uneven ground, it is very easy to twist, sprain or break an ankle with wellies.

Any boots I have ever had, have had gortex lining on the inside and leather on the outside. If you look after them properly, you should be able to stand in a stream/puddle for as long as you like and your feet will stay warm, dry and snug. I also combine them with gators or water proof pants and a good gortex jacket, that way i can stay dry all day in all conditions and terrain.

    wicklow hunter

I use Meindl and they are completely waterproof, i use sealskinz waterproof socks and Huntec gaiters from New Zealand, they keep your feet dry and warm, i have walked through plenty of streams and gone down bog holes and your feet are still dry.

I have aigle wellies but dont wear them stalking the Meindl give much better ankle support and are much more comfortable especially when walking over rough ground.

Anyone bought the neoprene/rubber welly boot from Cabellas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,582 ✭✭✭✭kowloon

I wear Danner Ft. Lewis lace ups. The pair I have now have seen wear every day for 3/4 years as work boots, hunting boots and for driving (bike). They still don't let in a drop. I wear the thin insulation pair, but you can get thicker if you only plan to use them in winter. Not the cheapest though, over $300 after shipping from Danners site, you could get them cheaper elsewhere I'm sure.

me and the bro got the wellies from cabelas, both different boots but lovely and comfortable and warm, make sure you get your size right i didnt e50 to send them back

    Avoid Meindl.

I am near to 60 years of age. I have been an avid hiker all of my life.

I also spent 31 years in the military.

I know how to care for boots.

On June 25 2022, I bought a pair of Men's Peru GTX boots for €240 at 53 Degrees North shop in Cork city.

I now find, 16 months later that the inner sole is crumbling.

I returned them to the shop to be told that they are out of warranty.

My local shoe repair shop said they were beyond repair.

To say that I am disappointed would be an understatement.

You claim to have a 150 year tradition.

These boots are clearly below standard and the materials in use, particularly in the mid sole, are not fit for purpose.

I have never encountered a pair of boots that performed so poorly.

The price is outrageous for such a mediocre standard of boot.

Meindl boots have caught a lot of flak lately. Lots of reports online of failure. I’m using Zamberlan boots now. Excellent quality, comfortable, great grip and superbly waterproof.

John Lambert in Camolin stocks them.

I'd go back to the shop with those meindl boots. Regardless of warranty they're clearly not fit for purpose, you'd expect much more wear than that from a pair of boots costing 240 euro. Look at the small claims court then.

Over the years I've used many different types of boots. And one day I was in the shops buying my boy some rugby boots. I came across these boots on a deal for €35.

Best boots I've ever had. They are warm, waterproof, light and give great ankle support. They have lasted 2 vigorous hunting seasons and still going strong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 142 ✭✭Paddyviking

Mendl Dovre, great high waterproof boots, easily broke-in.

Look after them and they'll look after you

I'm on my 3rd pair of Mendls with average pair lasting 8/10 years depending on how much I walk and I do alot of walking

    Pv

Had soles on a pair of Army Pro disintegrate..........they were looked after properly.

Lost all faith in Meindl now.
