    Hi all,

Just signed up for the Jingle bells 5k and the Aware 10k. The more cynical among you may say - "Ha, they're much shorter that last Monday's little oddessy, why bother?", and the more forensically minded will have trawled through my race report (perhaps fortified by alcohol, caffeine, or stronger substances...) and noticed that I live beside the park, and so I'm just going for a couple of training runs.
Still, I thought it might help get the legs going again.
Has anyone else entered any races since crossing the finishing line on Monday?

If you do them at the same pace as Monday then why bother indeed.
    Otherwise why not.

The Aware 10k is going to be my 1st run !

    Just step across me:D

For the first time this year, I'm not racing from one event to another and I intend to keep it that way (for a while at least!). Good idea to have something planned though. Rest is important, but too much of a good thing isn't

Tunney places himself firmly in the cynical camp:D
On 5th April this year I ran 42:50 for the Bupa Great Run 10k. I was still feeling shattered after my DCM '08 effort. It was the first real step on the road to DCM '09.
On Monday I got to 10k in 42:19, and 30k in 2:07:02, so I'm pretty sure any 10k split I could take out of the race would be quicker than my Great run pace.
As always I'll prepare to the best of my ability, and run to my limit on the day, and the time will be what the clock says at the finish.
Why bother? Well, I want something to aim for. At the moment the aim is just to be in shape to race the 5k and 10k, as I get closer I'll have a think about the time. If I run 42:50 for the 10k as the start of another training/racing cycle leading to a sub 3 marathon, then I'll be very happy indeed, even if it's nowhere near your PB.:pac:

Well I'm planning on walking it, and no one dare belittle my time of 1:30

Why bother? My point was if you can do a marathon at this pace then why bother doing a 10km at the same pace. Challenge yourself. Hurt. Feel the pain and embrace it. Welcome it into your heart as a friend.

This is what I mean with the "Otherwise why not", if you're going to do the 10km properly then why not do it and enjoy it.

As for my pb its pretty sh!te, but then again i'm not a runner. (i'm not anything really :) or sold I'm told regularly on here :) )

Heading for the Crookstown Motorway 10K on Saturday 7th November - should just about be getting down the stairs normally again by that stage! Any DCM finishers going - wear the finisher shirt and I can come and bore you with my tale of 26.2!

I was thinking of asking a similar question areo2k. This time last year I drank and smoked too much, I gave up smoking and reduced drinking (gave it up for a month pre DCM) I am now addicted to running!!!
The thing is I don't know what I should be doing next as I have zero background in running. I've only ever done 2 races (Dublin half 1:53 and DCM 4:21) I was thinking of the Waterford Half but reading this post now I'm thinking the smaller distances would be good for keeping me going over the winter till I can get cracking on a spring marathon.
Is there specific training plans for 5 & 10k races, and how do you work out a pace for them.

After this morning's (coincidentally approx 10k) run hobble, I think it will be a challenge at any pace.

I've been doing all of that since mile 23 on Monday.:)

I think I'm safe in saying it's better than my 39:58, set in '83, after 4 weeks training. I might have a crack at that time...I suspect my gait doesn't in any way correspond with your definition of running!

After DCM 08 I developed a foot injury and decided the best thing to do would be to rest it, drink Guinness and eat sh1te, so I did that for half of November, all of December and half of January. When i started back running I was 6-7kg heavier and it was all on the belly and several chins.

Bearing that in mind I signed up for the Crookstown motorway 10k and I'll probably do the Aware 10k also..anything to keep the blubber in check, it took months to get back to my previous weight...

I may just wear the T shirt..... I'll see your tale and raise you 1 tall story and 2 fibs :D

Does a 2mile race count? If so, then I ran one last night!

2 days after DCM, legs were pretty tight but it felt good to give them a decent spin out. I was registered for the whole race series so I thought why not. Ran 12.10, 30 secs off my pb but it still felt good.

Plan is the BHAA Beach Race, the Intermediate XC and the 2 races mentioned by the op too. Next major goal is the Raheny 5 (hopefully I'll be in sub 30 min shape by then)

I'm just after seeing the Jingle Bells one, hmmmm i might do that. 5k ?

I'm thinking about doing the Jingle Bells 5k, and would like to do the Aware 10k, but not sure if I can justify doing 2 races at exam time.

To be perfectly honest I'm absolutely itching to get back running, but since walking still hurts I should wait a bit...

I'm gonna do both too. 2 guaranteed PB's

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,612 ✭✭✭gerard65

Are they both on Saturdays this year? Isn't Jingle Bells usually a Sunday? Why did they have to change I can usually drag myself around the course after arriving home from Leeds at midnight the night before. :D

Deffo down for Aware 10km run but may also do the BHAA beach run in Nov 09. Found myself looking at 10km Hal Higdon training plans today(instead of working!!)..

The one on the 28th is a BHAA and you can enter on the day - no need for membership- details - www.bhaa.ie
The 29th is the inters xc and you need to be a member of an Athletics Ireland registered club.

I'll run the GOAL mile on Christmas Day. Hey, it's a whole mile, and it's flat out the whole way.

I didn't run the DCM. I suppose I could cross the finish line this weekend at some stage. Will that do?

On a serious note, I'd love to aim for a few longer races, so the Jingle Bells 5k is on my radar.

I take it both these races are in or around Dublin?

Haven't run any marathons yet, but after a couple of months out with injury, I need to get back to training and have a race or two as a goal.
Booked a place on the Fields of Athenry for Stephens Day - anything else on between now and then down west?

I enttered aware a few weeks ago. Got a letter in the post yesterday with a map of the course (tough course, not a fast one), some information and two sponsorship cards. Can't see anyone giving me any money for a 10k - "Thought you ran 40km before work on Thursdays? And you want money for a 10k?" Will have to sponsor myself now.....

It was also quite icy last year, so you had to take it handy in spots, particularly going around corners, and after the start when you initially turned left (Chesterfield road?).
