Five women were paraded naked, beaten and forced to eat human excrement by villagers after being branded as witches in India's Jharkhand state.

    They made them eat ****.
    That is foul.

That's feckin' awful! Some cultures are really hard to understand. I was watching a documentary last night set in Iran. It was a reality programme following the way of life of this family. When I say family, I mean one man, four wives and I don't know how many kids.
The father was a big ignorant a*shole, pointing out women with 'lovely tits' on the tv to one of the wives. By the way his mother was in it as well, sitting on the ground givin' out about everything..she looked about 100. I felt sorry for the wives, he was demanding food without so much as a please or thank you.
One of the wives was crying 'cos her daughter had been married off to a man and they were living beside them. However the man was some kind of control freak who wouldn't let the poor girl leave the house- she was a prisoner in her own home and her mother hadn't seen her in three years. Seemingly the girl had had a few offers of marriage from decent men and the father wouldn't let her go.
Another time the women were afraid to wake him up in case he hit them. The youngest of the wives seemed to be the most insecure 'cos he kept going on about it being time for another wife. One day he went off on his motorbike and came back with another woman on the back of it! She was young enough to be his daughter! The faces of the wives..one of them just threw the keys at her. Mad the way some cultures are:confused:.

we shouldn't judge, its just a different culture.

All cultures should be respected and celebrated - there's no wrong or right, just differences.

Why should anyone respect or celebrate a culture that forces people to eat sh*t? That's just ... humiliating and wrong, on so many levels.

No, no they shouldn't. Corruption seems to be a culture in Ireland, FÁS, Fianna Fáil, Iarnród Éireann oh our general banking system...it's throughout Irish society but I can't see why someone in say Canada should respect and celebrate it.

I really think you are missing the point here, chasing someone down, battering them and making them eat their own feces because they are a "witch" isn't something to be respected and celebrated.

I'm not trying to be racist here, it's called common sense.

There is a level of corruption culture in Ireland. It seems to feed in to a lot of things a lot of Irish people do, how many people do you know who have gotten jobs from nepotism? That's just the way I see it from what I have come across, of course maybe I just don't see enough of Ireland.

Ok fair enough, I was just trying to make a point that not every thing another culture does should be celebrated just because it is seen to be in another culture.

Tbh chasing "witches" down, making them eat crap and beating them doesn't seem to be the norm in India as far as I can tell.

Paedophilia could be argued in some parts of some counties to be cultural as could female genital mutilation...reason celebrate or respect?

Making people (women in this case...bit of a pattern?) eat **** isn't something to be celebrated by any humans of any hue.

I completely agree with you man. I'll never understand the attitude people like Jaeger have, the "it's part of thier culture so we should all celebrate that diversity" thing. Utter idiocy. Weather it's stripping, beating and humiliating widows to chase them out of town so you can have thier gaff, or stoning some poor 16 year old girl to death for sleeping with a guy from a different tribe, there is no excuse, least of all "well they've been doing it for years, haven't they".

I really hope you're being sarcastic. You go down there, stand back and watch these women being treated like that and see if you'll shrug your shoulders and say "It's their culture, I should respect that"

Anywho, in that part of the world the man is number 1 and the woman has no power anywhere near equal to him. There are plenty of documentaries and web videos to make you sick at how they are treated.

I remember I saw a video not too long ago of a group of people sitting around watching a man singing. His wife began to sing with him midway before he got up and beat the living hell out of her, stamping on her head and kicking her. The cameraman just giggled to himself over it.

There's also cases of girls having acid poured on their faces for having rejected the sexual advances of men, nasty stuff what it does to them. Google 'em and you'll find them.

Plus, there is the whole jolly fun of Afghanistan:
An Afghan bill allowing a husband to starve his wife if she refuses to have sex has been published in the official gazette and become law.

The original bill caused outrage earlier this year, forcing Afghan President Hamid Karzai to withdraw it.

But critics say the amended version of the law remains highly repressive.

They accuse Mr Karzai of selling out Afghan women for the sake of conservative Shia support at next week's presidential election.

The law governs family life for Afghanistan's Shia minority.

    Sexual demands

The original version obliged Shia women to have sex with their husbands every four days at a minimum, and it effectively condoned rape by removing the need for consent to sex within marriage.

The original bill caused outrage within Afghanistan and around the world
Western leaders and Afghan women's groups were united in condemning an apparent reversal of key freedoms won by women after the fall of the Taliban.

Now an amended version of the same bill has passed quietly into law with the apparent approval of President Karzai.

Just ahead of this Thursday's Afghan presidential election, human rights groups suggest the timing is no accident.

"There was a review process - Karzai came under huge pressure from all over the world to amend this law, but many of the most oppressive laws remain," Rachel Reid, the Human Rights Watch representative in Kabul, told the BBC.

"What matters more to Karzai is the support of fundamentalists and hardliners here in Afghanistan whose support he thinks he needs in the elections."

Women's groups say its new wording still violates the principle of equality that is enshrined in their constitution.

It allows a man to withhold food from his wife if she refuses his sexual demands; a woman must get her husband's permission to work; and fathers and grandfathers are given exclusive custody of children.

Yes, lets respect their culture..............and hold hands, sing songs and hug some trees.

western culture is the only sane one out there, and it still needs work

Naturally it needs work, every culture needs it and they will never be able to cater for everyone in their respected countries thus every culture can't be perfect. Britain is having a fair amount of trouble from the whole Sharia Law scenario.

It's quite disgusting that hardline fundamentalists are allowed enter and live in a Western country and spread their poison, protesting about our way of life and demanding their religion or extreme beliefs are given a bigger treatment. Abuse of the freedom of speech we live by, catch 22.
It's even worse when organisations or governments will bow down to their protests (Danish cartoon, anyone?) and the goddamn liberal hippies supporting them call us animals.

    Grrr, goddamn hippies!!

Am Yes there are wrong cultures!

We had a culture in the past where women were not allowed basic rights and through progress and education the culture changed.
Now I'm not saying that culture should be forced on anytone but they just need time to get to a place where basic rights are recognised.</rant>
