Just bought a new house with my partner, and we are moving in the next two weeks. We have decided that there is def NO SMOKING in our house even though most of our friends smoke, but we dont. Basically why should our house stink of smoke if we dont smoke you know. Theres a small covered area out the garden so smokers can go out there

Now ive told everyone we know who smokes this and its grand- except for one friend who said "Well if you wont let me smoke in your house i wont be coming to see you because im not standing out in the rain smoking"

My reply- "Well fine dont come so because your not smoking in our house"

So Do you let people smoke in your house?

Most smokers don't even thinking about lighting up in someone's house who doesn't smoke. Its common sense.

yes cos I smoke the good stuff :pac:
If I didn't then no frickin' way NEVER

Nope. My Dads place. He smokes. And he is adamant about doing it outside.

My Stepdad is a similar way. Always out on the porch unless its in his private studio.

Charleston also has the non-smoking ordnance.

Its not as if anyone should really be in the habit of smoking indoors anymore. What you do in your own home is fine but its becoming the norm to keep it outside when you dont have the say.

I smoke in my apt so obviously dont mind anyone else smoking in it. But i wouldnt even dream of asking my friends who dont smoke could i smoke in there's. Out the back i go, even tho most of the time they say its ok to smoke inside. It just doesnt feel right.

In saying that, i never smoke in mine when i have people over who dont smoke. I know i can but its just manners.

No I don't, but I do stand outside with them. It's not a nice habit, but they shouldn't be treated like lepers either.

I stand out the back garden in my house so I dont really let other people. well I let my dad because he smokes a pipe. I dont think you should let anyone smoke in your house if you dont want, most smokers are used to it now and dont mind. It actually feels strange smoking inside now.

I smoke in my own house and allow anyone else to but never in the house of someone who doesnt. So all the smokers over to mine. We can chat through a giant cloud of smoke..:D

    Yes, yes they should.

    Nope.
I don't smoke, nor do any of my housemates so we don't allow people to smoke in our house.

One of my friends lit up in my house last week when drunk and I promptly ushered him out the front door!

I am with everyone else who has posted before me! I smoke in my own house but wouldn't dream of lighting up in anyone elses house unless they were smoking and allowed me. If they didn't smoke, I would go outside and even if they allowed me I would still go outside.

Another point I want to make to OP, whether its no smoking, or something else entirely, what you say goes... Under your roof, under your rule!:D

I've 2 aunties that still smoke, and I don't mind them sparking up a death stick or two over a cuppa, but if they arrived with a six pack of stella and 20 blue, you'd hear the sonic boom of them getting booted out into the back garden. I try not to be a typical ex-smoking zealot - but you can only go so far ;)

If somebody comes to my house and doesn't smoke, I'd kick them out in the ****ing rain to enjoy the fresh air there.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 211 ✭✭Dr Kamikazi

Don't personally mind since I smoke in me own gaff, so would be a bit mean to boot everyone else out.
Other peoples houses I go outside unless otherwise stated by them. Just common sense.
Hang on, wasn't there exactly this thread already last year? Deja Vu.

I've only got a dorm room :o but I don't mind people smokin in it when they come over. I don't smoke myself. But if they do smoke, I always open up the window and light a scented candle, so the smell doesn't linger for very long

I'd far, far rather somebody went outside, but if they were rude enough to light up inside, I'd probably let it slide.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,677 ✭✭✭staker

@ OP, nah, I usually burn 'em in the incinerator down the garden

If they're rude enough to light up in my house I'm rude enough to tell them to fúck off outside and confine their carcenogenic shíte to their own lungs. Where at all possible I don't compromise my health to appease selfish bástards - only pig ignorant tools would light up in someone else's house without being invited to do so.

I don't smoke and I'd prefer if people didn't smoke in my apartment. When I'm drunk though, sometimes that can go out the window and people will smoke in here. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,290 ✭✭✭dresden8

Me and the missus are non-smokers.

Having said that we don't mind if people smoke in the house once the windows are open and the candles are lit.

We usually have to convice people it's ok to smoke and we really don't mind, but they go outside anyway.

Isn't that how manners should work?

if i had my own house i wouldnt let anyone smoke in my house i hate smoke id make them go outside and do it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 533 ✭✭✭DevilsBreath

I smoke so yes, but i don't smoke in other's, always outside. Wouldn't inflict it on anyone. really bad manners if they dont smoke.

You must know nice people then, I unfortunately know far too many who dont consider that not everybody else shares their nasty habit. Some people I know practically blow the smoke in your face

That said, I actually dont mind people smoking in certain rooms of my house once theres a window open and its only the odd one because I dont find the smell lingers. Thats since changed, as the OH can smell smoke a mile off and will moan at me to stop letting my friends smoke in the house

Now my place is a smoke free zone. People are used to smoking outside in everyday life now so it really shouldnt be an issue imo

As a smoker, I actually hate smoking indoors. I wasn't old enough for the smoke in pubs back in 2003 and my parents never let me smoke inside. Ironically I find the lingering smell repulsive. :)

In college i lived in student apartments that were nonsmoking and had smoke alarms in the rooms. the bf of the girl from the room beside me (who pretty much LIVED there for awhile ) took the batteries out of the alarm and used to smoke in her room. now maybe in his head he thought he was bein good only smoking in there but smoke carried through the whole place, it was horrible, particularly to a nonsmoker. i didnt take it too well & we had words. but sure she was a stupid bitch anyway

I wouldn't even let someone smoke outside my house. As soon as they come, they stink of smoke - no amount of chewing gym can disguise it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,606 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

I always think less of people who force me outside to smoke but I go outside anyway, being a bit of a martyr.

No smoking below decks where we live. You can smoke topside, provided your plume goes downwind and way from us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,392 ✭✭✭TequilaMockingBird

I smoke, too much, but as most have said here, smokers automatically assume they have to smoke outdoors anywhere, it's just plain manners. Although, when you're outside, people glare at you in case a bit of smoke might have wafted towards them.

I'm getting me a smoking room. And a smoking jacket. And smoking slippers.

Well I could, I'm a woman, but I'm sure I could tie it at a jaunty angle to make it work.

Nobody in our house smokes, but we let people who do smoke light-up inside. Hell, if it's good for them then it must be good for us, right?

    /starts smoking

Yeah, out the window. It's a bay window with a decent-sized alcove so they've a bit of space.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,073 ✭✭✭sam34

    no way.

i find smoking repulsive and there is no way i would allow anyone smoke in my home.

i also avoid going to the house of one of my friends who smokes, i arrange to meet him in a bar or restaurant instead, as his house is oppressively smoke-filled.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,701 ✭✭✭Offy

I smoke so Ive no problem letting people smoke in my home but I wouldnt even think of calling to a friends house if I cant smoke there. Equally I dont make non-smokers smoke if they call to my place!

left the place could not handle it anymore

    So never again
