If there was a WWIII in the same ilk as previous wars, would you voluntarily sign up with the allies knowing you could possibly be sent into an environment such as the jungles of Vietnam, Iwo Jima or the beach at Normandy?

If there was a third world war then it would be unlikely that there would be a front line as such.

In reality the whole thing would be over in a couple of hours. I would imagine there would be a lot of fighting amongst the remaining few people though.

WW3 will be fought with androids that are controlled with a mouse & keyboard just like a FPS game. It'll be Ub3r pwnage :pac:

Think I'll take me chances at Normandy ..:pac:

Seriously , the nukes would be the main players in the front line of any potenttial WW3 scenario and would mean a whole heap of air space between several countries .The troops on the ground would I think only be in a defensive role and keeping the civillian population in check .I mean any army (that's left ) is only going to inherit a wasteland full of zombies :pac:

Weirdly just posted this video in another thread:

    I saw what it had done, well, I wished I were dead;
I never knew there were worse things than dying.

    In short,
    No.

And not because I'm too queer to do it. I don't agree with war

I've lost interest in world affairs, the place is ****ed, anyone that wants to fight can all move off to some remote place and just kill each other.

Yep, of course. I'd just make sure to save it before I left so I could load it again if I got killed.

I always fancy going to war for some reason thinking it'd be a mad buzz, but if it really happened; I'm not sure.

A lot of the time war isnt necessary. Thinking that doesnt make you ignorant, it makes you observant

so even though you understand its necessity ie to stop a holocaust and your participation could possibly make a difference ie help stop a holocaust you wouldnt fight?

World War was declared on 3rd September 1939.
News of the Holocaust first leaked out to the free world in 1941.

World War II was not declared because of the Holocaust. It was declared because Britain knew they had made a mistake in appeasement and were saving face.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,886 ✭✭✭Darlughda

Well I'd have to have a good long think of what sovereignty means to me.

Are my notions of sovereignty and patriotism as relative and subjective as others' ideas of morality?
If so, who's war am I fighting as cannon fodder for some idiot's ideal?

    *face palm*

i am well aware of that i was using an example to get my point across

my point was if you knew something like this was going to happen would you really stand by and do nothing to help prevent it?

edit; and before you say it lets assume there is no other option

Its a matter of opinion really, if someone doesnt agree with war it doesnt mean they're an ignorant person. Each to their own and all that. Violence and bloodshed rarely get us anywhere

You can do something to prevent it without going to the front line you know.

I could possibly be persuaded to work as a doctor treating the war-wounded, but not on the front lines.

ye actually i guess the question did specifically say the front line and im talking more about joining the military in general

i dont agree with war either as a rule but i understand its necessary in some cases there is a big difference from that and saying you dont agree with war and it shouldnt ever happen under any circumstances in my opinion you are naieve/ignorant if you believe the latter

OK, I misunderstood you and thought you were saying World War II was to prevent the holocaust. My apologies. It's nice to be patronised though, thanks

Me personally? I would have sent in troops to the camps (were they known about), obviously this may invalidate my earlier post denouncing war. Sending in troops to the specific place they are needed rather than to a whole county, thus reducing the numbers of civilian casualties would seem a much more appropriate course of action.

So, yes. War may sometimes be necessary in extreme circumstances. I still don't agree with it though.

While I'm here, can I suggest that the Iraq war was/is illegal? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,257 ✭✭✭SoupyNorman

I dont think I would, in fact I know I would not. I watch every program I can on war and even the thoughts of being on the front line scares the pi$$ out of me. Wars are also based on the most ultimate of agendas so in many cases you're fighting for someones else's cause, mostly it's worthwhile but sometimes it's pointless (Afghanistan)

The above is generally related to the previous world wars and Vietnam wars etc, as was stated todays wars dont generally have front lines per say.

I think an alien invasion would be different, then all our inter-human conflicts get put to one side and we join forces to defend our planet, I think then I'd love to get a pop at those alien bastards.

imo removing a dictator is a valid reason for war and imo the un is pretty impotent

however they did win that war in what a few days? everything since then has been a mistake at the very least if not illegal

edit; and i know thats not the reason they did it im just saying either way removing him had to be done if it took a crap load of oil as motivation to do it them so be it

Fair enough that Saddam probably had to be removed (I'm not going to be a pedant and mention WMDs :pac:)

But I'm not sure which would have been worse - the lesser of two evils, if you will. Saddam was estimated to have killed (or caused the deaths in most cases) of killed 500,000 people during his 24 year reign. That's just under 21,000 killings a year. Since the invasion, it's estimates range(obviously, the real number is unknown) between 100,000 and 700,000.. for sake of argument, let's average this to be 400,000. 400,00 people killed in a 6 year conflict. That's nearly 67,000 civilian deaths a year.

As I say, lesser of two evils.
But I'm not so sure it was worth it
