Smokers: Do you still buy cigarettes from shops?

For the first time since last year's budget, I had to venture into a shop to buy a pack of smokes. I almost got sick - over €8.50 for 20 benson.

The majority of people I know buy cartons of 200 for around €30-40. Unfortunately, not getting home last night prevented me from grabbing one of these packs today.

As much as I'd only love to pay the hilariously high taxes on Irish cigarettes, I find it impossible to want to part with over €8.50 a day to get my sweet sweet nicotine fix.

Having mentioned this in work, I found that the vast majority of people I work with also buy their cigarettes in cartons for around €30-40 each. On further investigation, I found only one person who buys 20 packs from shops - and only for social smoking (heading out, drinking a pint etc).

So boardsies, how many of you have taken to abandoning ye olde Irish shopkeep, and resorted to purchasing cigarettes the cheap(er) way?

    In order to save time, I have answered the following questions/queries/statements below;
Why not just stop smoking altogether and stop poisoning the rest of us :mad::mad:
    Because I don't want to
It's because of people like you that we're in a recession
    No it's not
The government need that money to care for idiot smokers like you in hospital
I don't plan on contracting cancer
Do you plan on contracting emphysema or any other smoking-related disease?
    No

In short, the price of smokes doesn't make it impossible for people to keep smoking in my opinion - it just means we stop paying our own government for them. If people want to smoke, they'll keep on smoking. Even working full-time, I wouldn't dream of paying over €8.50 a pack unless I was very, very stuck.

    What say you boardsies?

How do you purchase your cigarettes? 167 votes

Full government regulated price, from patriotic Irishmen and women working in our proud stores.

At whatever off-the-truck price I can get them at.

I only came here to whinge about smokers being terrible people.

Poll needs a"Unfortunately i pay the full price because i dont know anybody selling the cartons" option. ;)

I pay the full price for this reason but if i knew someone selling them then id never pay the full price again unless i was stuck.

I would actually like some figures on tax revenue from cigarettes over the last 10 years before making any real opinion.

I admit to buying most of my smokes over the border

I only save about 1.50 per pack but I don't give a shit, why should I spend more so that corrupt politicians can live it up and still leave hospitals underfunded? Hospitals and healthcare that excise is supposed to be spent on

If I ever get cancer I'll go to England for treatment privately, so I'm not robbing anyone

In fact this post makes me feel good about not buying them here.. I might start selling them too :pac:

I don't smoke all the time (30 a day for a week, then off them for a month sort of thing) but buy everything abroad. Usually bring back 1000 from every trip abroad, maybe 3 or 4 times a year.

Just over 3 years since I bought them in an Irish shop (€6.50 a packet so whenever that was).

So you are going to emigrate to England when you get cancer?

If I did get it then yes I would emigrate temporarily, I think it's called medical-tourism

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,763 ✭✭✭Sheeps

The amount of money the government gets from smokers is much larger than the amount of money being spent on the health care of those suffering form cancer as a result of smoking fyi.

    Haha.
Its not like going to get root canal!
If you get lung cancer, you will likely need two or more of radical surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. They can take months - years of treatment, carry significant risks and have quite a high recurrence rate. The rate of significant co-morbidity is high.

What I am saying is that you are unlikely to avoid using Irish healthcare unless you plan to emigrate for some time. Not that I would begrudge you accessing Irish healthcare, I just dont think your 'medical tourism' plan is pracical.

He'd definitely get better healthcare there!;)

I buy my smokes from a Lithuanian guy. 40 euro per carton. Also bring in about 800 everytime I arrive back home from a trip. Over 8 euro for a pack of smokes?! I don't think so!

I buy a 4 euro packet of tobacco and it lasts me the week (just about) and a packet of real cigarettes for when I'm hitting the town.

Other than I get my mate from Dubai to get me 400 for 30 euro whenever she goes back there.

@OneArt: Definitely. Rolling tobacco is the way to go if you can't find anyone selling the cartons.

Liquid Smoke is a cooking additive used to give a dish a smokey flavor, without all the hassle of lighting up a slow-smoker for the better part of 4-12 hours and thus conserving much of the emperor's fuel.

I don't smoke but a few of my friends and colleagues do, I usually bring them back a few cartons of smokes whenver I travel, it is a bit of a nightmare as your carryon becomes full quickly with cartons of cigarettes and whatever hard liquor I decide I would like to enjoy without paying the gov tax.

Go to Sainsburys Newry, £5.25 a pack.

Personally speaking I haven't bought any cigs south of the border for about 2 years now.

I'll quit and take all the warnings on the pack seriously when our Minister for Health stops looking like a miniature Death Star.

I read in the Indo this past weekend I think it was that €6.50 from every pack of smokes in the country goes straight to the government.

Ask ANYONE from another country if they can bring in a carton or two for you on their next trip back. And next time on holiday - stock up.

    I haven't paid over 4e a pack in years.

Really....afaik there is a very small margin on fags, like 10c a pack? How much does he knock off?

is it true you can bring up to 4000 cigarettes back with you through a airport??

What's the story with buying them online... is it legal?

You're not too far off. Officially its 800 for personal use. But I've a friend who works in customs at the airport and she says that she and most of the other staff there work with 2500 cigarettes as the cut-off point below which they'll let you through so long as they are for personal use.
And so long as they are duty paid of course (Tenerife and Canaria catch a lot of people out because they are duty free, so 400 is the max from there).
What's the story with buying them online... is it legal?

We have dozens of threads on this in the smoking forum, updated hourly, people giving tips on the latest online sites , prices etc.
Its a private forum but if you pm one of the mods (Des or Papa Smut) etc.
