I heard a rumour that Tubridy is going to use the interview with Donal Og to come out himself.

Donal Og Cusack and Daniel O'Donnell.
Sound like a couple of cattle rustlers from Kiltimagh.

No improvements on the guest front so.

I presume Daniel will sing a bar or two, won't that be a delight, for Donal Og.

I was listening to him this morning on the radio. He really is unbearable. When will someone tell the guy that he is just NOT FUNNY. If he just straight presented, if you avoid the topical pun ;-), he might actually be ok. I wish my Newstalk reception was better.

Sounds like another show with poor enough guests. They seem to be very quick to get people on to give their story, Bernard Dunne the week after his fight, Mr. Sutherland on the week his son died, Parents of yer man Shane that murdered Sebastian on a few weeks after he died.... etc. I think the researchers must be desperate for guests every week. All these people were local and easy to get hold of. There have been very few real star guests on the show this year so far. Just a load of Irish people telling a true story or people flogging books.

I bet he wont be singing "Stand Beside Me" while Donal Og is still on.

I thought maybe Louis Walsh, Westlife or BoyZone would be on? too soon?

I don't think it's too soon for the LLS production staff to ask one of the above to appear. They have very good recent form in that regard, Peter Sutherland among others. Like to strike while the iron is hot in order to get a more emotional interview. Tubridy doesn't handle these moments well however. Byrne was a master, Kenny less so but this guy takes it to a new low.

I would imagine there'd be someone one directly connected to the Gately death either tonight or in next 2 weeks. If there's not then you can take it that LLS were refused when offering a slot on the show.

i think tubridy gets a lot of stick for no reason on here. yes he annoying the way he goes on sometimes but hes a good presenter there will never be anyone as good as gay byrne EVER. hes been a little disappointing for me i will admit. some of the questions with guests seems a little rehearsed kind of instead of going with the flow. seemed more relaxed on tubridy tonight. overall hes doing a good job IMO. look at gerry ryans one night stand in. OMG i couldnt watch the late late if he were in the hotseat.

Ye, never though about.. Considering (like I've said above) that they had Darren Sutherland's father and the father of the murderer on, within a very short period of time since their respective son's death's, I thought it would have been a fair bet that Ronan Keating and Louis would have been on. Given John And Edward's performance last week, I think they need him more than the LLS does.

I think his line of questions have been very poor, in general, for a lad that considers himself intelligent or likes to portray himself as such. Gerry Ryan seems to be good in his one to one situation, but then he does have the comfort blanket of a) being able to edit out anything stupid he might say and b) not having the pressure of going out live. I think RTE would have to time delay the show if GR was presenting it though

Now that you mention it, I'll be surprised if either Stephen Gately's parents, or the band aren't on. Possibly both.

It could be a good item. Particularly if they swing Jan Moir from the lighting rig like a pinyata and give a hurley to everyone in the audience.

Actually, Moir would be a really explosive choice of guest. (She's the journalist who wrote the vile homophobiv article in the Daily Mail just after Gately died, for those who weren't following the story.)

Why not all the other guests too? That would grip the nation.

Now that I'd like to see. Surely there's no way Moir would come on the show!! Unless she was blackmailed or the like.

Her and her rag are simply deplorable. I know a few people who actually buy that paper too, they just won't listen to sense.

I met a guy once who wouldn't tell us what he did for a living. After twenty minutes of jovial hectoring, and genuine curiosity, he finally revealed that he worked for the Daily Mail. He was genuinely embarrassed about it. I think he expected a walk-out.

Comrade ladies. Comrade gentlemen. Tonight is a serious time. We have weathered much together on our Late Late threads. The Nolans. Two Taoisigh. Some Waterboys and their friends.

Through all these happy hours, however, there has been one painful experience, as inevitable as a fart at a lentil breakfast.

Fifty or sixty posts into the thread, someone will detonate the stupid bomb. "Why are you watching if you don't like it?" I feel I have only two possible responses to this. I either jam screwdrivers into my eyes and run flailing into Smithfield Plaza with a courgette sticking out of my hole, or I derail the question.

I have chosen the latter course. Tonight, I am going to pretend that they have asked for a sandwich recipe. And I am going to respond with a fine bread-based snack, lovingly described. The bread-based snack is my secret power. I hereby claim it.

    Ladies. Gentlemen. Consult your armoury.

I was thinking the very same thing this evening. I have ignored the last few perps, as I think there's always someone who won't be able to resist blasting at these people. If you could be so kind as to reccommend a healthy helping of "cop-on" as dressing in your sandwich, us regulars would be very grateful.

Of course tonights show maybe streets ahead of anything we've witnessed to date and we won't be able to deliver any critical judgements.

I'm not ignoring your irony, Reg, but I do have high hopes about tonight.

Donal Og is an ideal guest. He's just done something gutsy and important, and it's right to celebrate it. There are families all over the country struggling with the idea of a gay son or daughter, and gay kids who can't imagine ever being accepted in the world they grew up in. Tonight's show could make it easier for all of them. That's not a trivial thing.

Daniel is, potentially at least, an interesting guy. What has always struck me about him is the gap between the cheesy awfulness of his material and the fact that he is obviously a fairly bright guy. If Ryan makes any effort to explore that gap, we could see some entertaining telly.

The Sawdoctors are what they are. If it works, the whole show will feel like a celebration of non-Dublin Ireland. If it doesn't, there are still opportunities for funny or moving moments.

I think tonight is the night when Ryan comes good on all the promise. Enough with the potential. Let's bring on the achievement.

And if that doesn't happen, I am doing killer things with tayto crisps and brie.

We should make a list of the people we would love to see as guests.

My current top pick: Nick Griffin. I think Tubridy could really play that well, without any hysteria, letting him hang himself.

    Any other thoughts?

Tubs lack of interviewing skills and retarded questions are bludgeoning to death the faint hopes I had for him as presenter.

No. Just no. That discussion will be about as interesting as vomit.

I'm not sure there's any point making a wish-list of guests. RTE dont seem to be able to attract the real stars on a Friday night any more, and even when they get a big guest like Dawkins, Tubridy is a poor interviewer. I think a few things need to happen, and if anyone from RTE is watching please take these on board:

    1. Get him the fk out of the audience. It was childish nonsense when he did it on his own show, and it still is unbearable.
    2. Help Tubridy with his preparation and questions, get somebody experienced like Gaybo to help him. In my opinion he is terribly badly prepared. Maybe he needs to give up the radio show and go on a media studies course.
    3. Get rid of the band. Leave the cheesy musical puns to Letterman's band. They just make the show look cheap, and I swear to god they are miming the theme song....
    4. Well the last one would be to get better quality guests, but I dont know how you would attract them. I just seem to remember Gaybo, and even Pat having better guests, but that may be just nostalgia, which I have a lot of when I'm watching Tubridy.

    In fairness, I am.

Having watched the first four or five shows through a bleak mist of sobriety, I think I owe it to the genius of Ryan to poach my frontal lobes into a condition of praeternatural receptiveness. Here I am, now entertain me. Hic!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,295 ✭✭✭Meeja Ireland

Interesting points. I'm a bit more optimistic than you, but I largely agree with your analysis.
    1. Get him the fk out of the audience. It was childish nonsense when he did it on his own show, and it still is unbearable.

You're right, of course. It was OK on his own show, as a kind of knowing faux-cheesy variety turn. But the Late Late Show is a bit bigger than that kind of ironic self-amusement. Raising an eyebrow at your own silliness should not be the limit of a host's ambition. Grow up.
    2. Help Tubridy with his preparation and questions, get somebody experienced like Gaybo to help him. In my opinion he is terribly badly prepared. Maybe he needs to give up the radio show and go on a media studies course.

I agree that he needs more preparation, but I am very hopeful about his abilities. He seems to me to be very intelligent. He shares with Pat Kenny the surprising ability to actually read the book he is interviewing someone about.

That being said, he is obviously overworked and the team aren't preparing him well enough. They invested an awful lot in the first show, and went into hibernation afterwards. Time to get over it, guys. There's more to your first season than the first episode. Stop preening and buckle down.
    3. Get rid of the band. Leave the cheesy musical puns to Letterman's band. They just make the show look cheap, and I swear to god they are miming the theme song....

I will be astonished if they make it to the second season. If he has the guts to acknowledge a mistake, he will drop them after the Christmas show. Pretend they're going on a tour, or something. Then quietly never mention them again.
    4. Well the last one would be to get better quality guests, but I dont know how you would attract them.

By being better, and more imaginative. It seems to me as if the researchers start to prepare a given show on Tuesday morning. A quick look at the Sunday papers, and see what they can catch up on. Let everyone else set the agenda, in other words, and we'll do our best to catch up. It's lazy, and it will gradually start to shed viewers.

There's a hopeful sign, perhaps, in picking Daniel O'D. He's not particularly in the news at the moment, which means they actually sat around and had an idea, rather than reading the feature supplements and seeing who had a book to sell.

I'm absolutely certain that the researchers are reading this thread, by the way. Suggesting guests might actually have an effect. If nothing else, it will give us an indication of our expectations, and whether the show meets, surpasses or fails them.

Did anybody ever say anything positive about Pat Kenny when he was in charge in all the threads from years gone by? All I seem to remember was countless barbs at the Plank. Funny how time heals! I suppose the answer is that Tubridy makes him look good...

I am looking forward to Donal Og Cusack and Julie Feeney's performance.

Some taste. He's dressed nearly as badly as I am.

Awkward. Tubridy obviously has no interest in this whatsoever either, he could at least fake being interested in GAA.

"How would he differ from Brian Cody as a manager"

Does Tubridy know ANYTHING about sport, what a stupid fkn question.

Dónal Óg seems really nice and down to earth. I love how he handled Tubridy's question where he mixed up the All-Ireland semi-final and the Munster semi-final. :)

This is exactly it. For all Pats awkwardness with light entertainment he at least did his research and handled the serious topics well.
