Don't go near wmf. It's an awful format. It mangles text into crappy outlines and shifts points all about the place.

You don't crop vector data. You mask it.
If you're using illustrator just apply a clipping mask.

Yeah I found that out a bit later haha...I ended up using uncompressed emf which was acceptable.

Specific context was diagrams created in visio to be used in LyX.
