Hitting the gym: A waste of time or well worth it?

Was talking to mates earlier while watching the United game and the topic of going the gym came up as they were heading out tonight. But i said no as i like to get to the gym early in the morning. 2 of them began giving me stick saying it's a waste of time and a load of bóllix. But i was arguing back that it's a hobby. And it's as much a waste of time as when i run around with a hurl in my hand for 70 minutes. They're both Kate Moss skinny so i think it's just an insecure thing with them as i could deadlift Australia outta the southern hemisphere. So the discussion earlier just got me curious about how many see it as a waste or worth the effort? Seems to be a lot of new comers to my gym recently. Maybe Irish people are ready to lift more than just pints.

Worth it, I would reckon. Far more so than any of the other stupid sports like soccer et al.

Not that I go or anything.

I don't go, but if you know what you are doing and have a goal it's worth it.

Gym can cost hundreds and hundreds a year

Buy a good pair pair of runners and get fitted for them is about €120
Set of weights and bench in Argos is maybe €150
    Instant money saver
If you swim just go to the local council pool, most counties have one.

But best of all is a few quid a week to play soccer on a pitch with friends once or twice a week

Could be just a jealousy thing like you said. Personally I think if going to the gym (or exercising itself) makes you happy/healthy it's worth doing. What's wrong with that? Gives you a sense of well-being.

Newcomers to the gym? Winter is setting in and the days are getting shorter and the weather is getting worse. That drives alot of people to the gym.

Personally I prefer sports or jogging to the gym. Anything open-air really. Feels better and it's free.

    Gyms are for suckers

you can do everything they offer and more for free or a fraction of the cost in your own time, and in a much more relaxed enviroment

It's worth it if you like going to the gym. It's not worth it if you don't.

i think its only worth it if you like it no point in trying to force yourself to go to the gym. id like to join a gym but i cant afford one right now so i just go to a park and run

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,228 ✭✭✭bluto63

I went to the gym and was lifting weights for about 2 years. It didn't give me a lot of muscle and took up a good bit of time. I decided it wasn't worth it

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 37,214 ✭✭✭✭Dudess

Well if you put in adequate effort, of course it's worth it.

I hate going to the gym though. As others, I much prefer outdoor exercise. Now that crappy weather is finally upon us though, it'll have to be aerobics and dance classes - and the torment that is spinning, if my arse can take it

That's still preferable to the mind-numbing tedium and isolation of the gym though.

Like most things you get out of it what you put in. Do you have a specific goal in mind or is it just general fitness you go for?

Personally, I find actual sports more fun and the gym is more of a tool.

Actually hitting the gym, however, would probably be a complete waste of time [/smartarse].

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭OctavarIan

Depends on what you want. Fitness can be achieved for free if you just go outside and start running. Building muscle properly and getting 'ripped' is what you should be using the gym for tbh

€220 a year for use all all facilities including pool is pretty cheap tbh. For weight equipment to match the gym you'd spend far more than that alone

Fraction of the cost? Ha. In your own time? What? If I wasn't so exhausted I'd probably recognise this a the troll post it is.

Community Gym costs 30/mo ? Yeah that Does add up.

Im not the type to do sports though. Im too out of shape to really embrace the fun part. Its just a lot of wheezing and then falling over and getting tackled by a linebacker.

Only vain jerks go to the gym. It's a life sentence cos if you stop it all turns to fat anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,081 ✭✭✭Fromvert

Well worth it as long as nobody gets in the way of me doing my bicep curls in the squat rack.

Well I live on the shore, and bought a kayak for 50 euro and an weight bench for 100

those will last way longer than a 12 month contract, and they cost half as much.

    I'm not trolling =)

If you don't agree that's fine, spend your money on what you want

(serious reply, if it's something that you enjoy and if it makes you feel happy in yourself, then of course it's worth going to the gym :) )

I like going to the gym when its pretty empty its when other people are there it annoys me, especially groups of lads. Theres something very homoerotic about blokes going to the gym together, the other day there was two lads doing weights beside me when one turns to the other and asks was he getting any stretchmarks as he was getting bigger, i mean wtf is that all about.

Obviously jealous of their guns and you have no friends to go to the gym with.

Its a personal choice, I was in a gym for a few years and trained very hard, watched the diet and hence got great results. My then mates were always moaning and could never understand why I went, they preferred to sit around watching football and drink. I used to love it when jealousy raised its ugly head on nights out when I got lots of female attention!:D

If ya don't get the trainers to show you what to do you're p1ssing in the wind.

I joined a gym with the intention of building up and ended up just running on the tread-mill most of the time. :o

You gotta let it hang for a while, dip it in some spicy marinade and knead it a little

and a bunch of flowers wouldn't go astray either

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,171 ✭✭✭Neamhshuntasach

I mix both the gym with outdoors. 3 days in the gym for 30-40 mins with mostly compound movements. And 3 days calisthenics. It's amazing what you can do with a goal post or a few playground structures. Look up videos on youtube if curious. I don't really do any cardio other than hurling most Sundays.

It's about 4-5 hours a week and the results i get i feel it's worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,460 ✭✭✭✭The_Kew_Tour

I have lost 3 stone in last year from going to the gym so I have say I have found it be excellent for me but thats becuase I got results out of it.

I know have about 4-5 extra mates from going gym too so thats added bonus both male and female

If you like going to gym then keep going is what I would say anyway.

Actually it's a camán. Or hurley, hurl or even heard scullion being used by lads from the north. Where i'm from everyone always called it a hurl. Regional thing probably.

I hate the gym. It's a bit boring and I prefer to be kickin a ball around with my mates any day. However I still go pretty much every day and I have gotten good results from it so yes it's definitely worth it if you can manage to stick it out. I have a gym in my apartment complex which doesn't cost anything so that's why I go. Tried the whole membership thing before I moved to where I am now and it was the biggest waste of money ever because it was too much effort to get there. It's all about the convenience really.

It's definately worth it, in the long run, you won't see the results for a while, but when you do see them, you will be pleased :)

I was working with a very built lad, who had a tendency to wear a vest, during the summer, and he had these really prominent stretchmarks around his shoulder. Does this happen often? It was ****ing disgusting.

Yup, it has to be expected, but won't happen to most unless you put on decent size.
