Fixie/Refurb Questions

Putting together a Fixie based on my old Raleigh racer. I've got the chainline etc sorted ok, lugs removed and parts waiting to go on. I was going to get the frame done by Tallaght Powder Coating. As I can't search the previous threads do ye know:
Do I need to strip the paint off the frame, or will they do it ? If so presumably they would charge more ?
Can they do two colours, or just all one ?
Do I have to remove the Headset ?
If so do I need to block off the top and bottom of it to stop paint getting in ?
There's a small bolt in the bottom of the frame at the bottom bracket which was holding on the cable guide. The bolt was also screwed up against the bottom bracket casing as I can see where it left a mark on it. Did this serve a purpose in keeping the bottom bracket in position or was it just to hold the cable guide on ? Thanks, LastGasp.

i'd say your best bet on all those questions is to ring them.
The bolt should be there just for cable guides. Not sure if any bottom bracket requires something like that to keep it in place. keep us posted on how it goes I would be interested in something similar in future

You'd have to remove the headset. Maybe cover the cups with tape.

Take the bolt out of the bottom bracket shell. It was just to hold the cable guide in.

You removed your lugs? I'm assuming you mean some other part...

    Edit: But yes, call them.

I meant the cups. Would I get away with masking them off ?

Maybe I used the wrong term ! I meant derailleur hanger, downtube gearshift mounting points, top tube cable guides etc

I'll give them a call. Don't have much time during the day !

Taking out (and putting back in) the headset cups is a bit messy... I'd definitely ask if you could tape them up.

The lugs are the metal bits that hold the frame tubing together, you'd be in a bit of trouble if you had removed them somehow...

out of Interest, did you get a price for the paint job at Tallaght Powder Coating?

If you feel like going the cheaper, DIY route, here's a good guide.

No, not yet. I'll post up more info if I get it.

Just having a look through flickerx's link above, it might be worth giving that a shot first. That way, if it doesn't work out, you can then go to a professional.

Give a read through how I painted mine if you like:

I think it turned out pretty good for a home effort.

The home made way, if you do it the full whack yourself, costs about 65-70 euro.

A big tin of Nitromors and a brush is about 20.
Primer, 2 cans of your colour, and a lacquer is 35.
Then you have smaller stuff like the steel wool, masking tape, and sandpaper.

I'm always an advocate of trying stuff yourself. Give it a go.

Thanks for all the suggestions but I don't have a lot of time and I think a powder coat will be a lot more professional and longer-lasting than my DIY paint job would be. So here's my old Raleigh 531c from about 1985 on it's way to Tallaght Powder Coating (in Walkinstown !) for a fresh coat of NATO Green. Should be ready next Tuesday or Wednesday.

Finished my Fixie project on Thursday night, and went for my first spin, to work, on Friday. Managed not to get fired off, just about ! Here is a link to a few pics of the finished article, I'm happy enough with the way it's turned out.

EUR90 from Tallaght Powder Coating, which included stripping/sandblasting and powder coat. Saved a lot of labour over stripping it myself !
