Getting my fitness back

    Hi all,

So after a full three month of being injured (my hip) and not being able to do anything only rest, I have got the all clear to start back training. I started back training last week but my fitness levels have been wiped out.

How can I re-gain my fitness ? . I am a keen runner (that's where my injury stemmed from). I am on a schedule to get back on track with the running. I have access to a gym. What are the best things that I can be doing (rowing, cross trainer ect.) in the gym to aid myself with the task of becoming fit again ?

Any tips would be great !

If you want to specifically get back into running, I'd suggest talking to the people in the running forum. I can move this thread if you like? If it's for general fitness I'll leave it here, but it would help if you could state more what your end goal is.

You'll be surprised at just how quickly you'll bounce back though if you were fit before. It's great! :)

If you could leave it here it would be great. Basically I am a long distance runner and this year I have been hampered buy injury. My goal is to run my next marathon under 3.15.

I am pretty sorted on the running side of things. I just need advise on some plans or exercises that I cold do at the gym to help me get back fit asap. Like rowing would i be better doing long distance 10,000 metres plus on a low level or doing short distances as fast as I can.

well if your trying to get fit so you can go back long distance running than your regime now should focus of long distance stuff that will tax your aerobic system. ideally if you are going to be running than your training should be running as this way you guarentee that you are working the same muscles in the same way.

also seeing as you have had a serious enough hip injury your time in the gym could also be spent doing some strengthening exercises. try using bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, etc. these will ensure you dont re-injure yourself when you return to running. consult a good physio who will give you a complete set of rehabilitation exercises, but for example you could do lateral leg raises (lie on your side, legs straight and together, then lift the leg on top up into the air, keeping it straight, return to start position and repeat).

hope this helps and good look getting back to full training
