Ballycotton 10

I see that the date for Ballycotton 10 has been moved to March 21st due to date clashing with national cross country finals.

2 extra weeks to get race fit! Unfortunately very close to Connemara now but not close enough to stop me racing it flat out.

This is unfortunate as the original date fell just a few days after an important birthday for me that is a multiple of 5. Now I will have deteriorated by two weeks - and there will probably be a few others having birthdays in the meantime too! It would have been much more distressing if they have moved it forward into February!

When does registration open for this for 2010?

People are very eager this year!

Based on last year's event (held on March 8th), registration by post (for non-AAI affiliated athletes) began at the end of November. This required the applicant posting a stamped-self addressed envelope to the event organisers, filling-in the application form and posting back the application form (with a nominal fee [€15?]) before the following Tuesday. I think that if you got your application in before the following Thursday, you still made the "cut".
But they are quite (rightly) ruthless and when the quota is reached (I think it is 2,500 runners) those who were "slow" in returning their application have their €15 returned.
As someone pointed out here last year it is quite the exercise in cross-training in just getting your application in on time.
For AAI affilliated members< I think the application window remains open for a further 2 weeks, although I remain open to correction on that.
Elites have an even greater time-frame in which to apply.

Addendum - some of the event organisers only consider you to be racing the event if you can do it in 60min or less :o, otherwise you are "only" running or jogging the course. And they reckon "it's time to put the quality back into Ballycotton":P:P.
On that basis if I enter, I won't be racing it.

If you raced all 4 Ballycotton Summer Series 5 mile races (Ballyandreen, Shangarry, Churchtown South, Ballycotton) you also get the extra 2 weeks grace for entry. In years gone by it was enough to have raced one but I think in light of the higher participation in races in general, it was said at the start of the series that you needed to do all 4.

Of course, in that case they have less than 100 people "racing" it.

All bone fide quotes from an article in the events programme from 2009.

    Why would I lie :p?

I think if I remember correctly that article was not written by an event organiser and was more an article to 'stir' a bit of debate. In fairness to the organisers, they cater for a massive entry and try to steer people towards broader participation in their entry criteria...i.e join a club, or at least run the summer series and your pretty much guaranteed entry.

As regards Sub 60 and the stnadard presently, I think 1993 was the golden era of ballycotton when over 200 people ran Sub 60 but in general, the average was more like 120-130 during the 90's and its really only in the last few years that it dropped away, but its recovering...I expect we'll have >100 Sub 60's this year...something to do with recession? From what I can see, theres an inverse proportional relationship between house prices and No. of people running Sub 60.

Apparently i am guaranteed an entry this year as i returned my chip because i could not run it this year.

    Bump.....

Entry forms in the post today if you sent in SAE or up on the website this evening. If you don't meet any of the special entry criteria I'd say you would need to have the form posted off in the morning to have any chance of getting entry!

Did the SAE envelope thing last year, will try the download option later this evening, although as I am a bone fide AAI registered member I should have no problems?

Entry forms for the Ballycotton 10 are out today, mine was posted tonight. Is anyone else running in this race? If you are, I'd advise you to get your entry posted by tomorrow at the latest!

If anyone is running in the race, how about a Boards meet-up beforehand?

I am guaranteed an entry because i returned my chip last year, but im not entering.
To much hassle and not enough reward for me.
drive all the way up there, park miles away from the start, narrow start,no showers,no food,no t-shirt...pat on the back and head home for yourself...

Dungarvan on the other hand is everything Ballycotton is not...

I have never raced Ballycotton so i cannot comment on the mystique of it ( if any ),but to me Dungarvan is run under better conditions, fed afterwards, nice t-shirt,hot shower, ample parking within half mile of start.
Thats my first target race of 2010,i may race mallow but wont be putting myself under any pressure.

I'm not the biggest fan of Ballycotton but in their defence......

Thefield I parked in last March (along with 100's others) was within 500 metres of the start.

I got (at least one) Mars bar thrust into my hand just after the finish.

T-shirts for the first 100 finishers. (but imho a mug, which is guaranteed to every finisher, is a much more practical & versatile prize).

Just sent off for Ballycotton today, just made it under the 15th Dec wire. Was looking at the results from last year and that was a really strong field they had. Hope it'll be the same this year.

I stuck "Boards AC" on my application but I am listed as "unatt/Carrigxxxxxxx", while there are "real" clubs listed after alot of other successful applicants.
    e.g. "Hugh Jarse Mallow AC"

Is Boards AC not being recognised as a bone fide club?
