was reading in the paper they were putting plans up for limerick to get a port to dock the supertankers..anyone who doesnt know what a supertanker is look at the pics below..basically biggest ships in the world and limerick will become the countries richest city as a result! the port is to be located in foynes..can you imagine rowing a little boat up the river and seeing these behind you?!!

    This makes no sense D-A-V-E.

We are a small island. Why do we need supertankers depositing huge loads of material to a port on the Shannon Estuary?

Also - How does Limerick become rich? Are they depositing these cargos to us gratis?

the boats are full of gold. free gold.

    1. Build Huge Port
    2. ?????????
    3. Profit

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,560 ✭✭✭✭Kess73

That story is a load of pie in the sky methinks.

The water depth at the harbour in Foynes cannot support a true supertanker, even at high water. The threshold in terms of size of the largest craft that can use Foynes, legally and physically, is far smaller than a supertanker.

Also factor in the stopping time of those behemoths, sometimes it takes them up to ten km to stop with a turning circle of a mile or so. The fact that any ports that can take them have to be custom built seems to have been lost on the paper too.

Would love to see how the ferry service between Tarbert and Killimer would work with supertankers in the area:D not to mention the smaller commercial craft that use the estuary.

    1. Get Supertankers to go to foynes
    2. Wave at them
    3. ????
    4. Profit!

What paper did you read this in?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 531 ✭✭✭D-A-V-E

sheesh, dont kill the messenger lads! im only spitting out the news here like! id imagine if it were to happen it would be before the foynes island or whatever you call it and the shannon would be dredged further to allow it happen..the river is a lot wider around the bend from foynes but i dunno the EXACT location..foynes area..i dont know how limerick will be rich either, or why they pick ireland but it is all in the paper!

The lack of a proper road connecting Foynes to Limerick would also hinder this proposal. There was supposed to be some provision for a link up between the new Rathkeale by-pass and Foynes, but I read in last weeks post that none of the preferred routes for the by-pass contain proposals for a link up with the port.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,560 ✭✭✭✭Kess73

Whatever paper it is, it is spouting a fairytale.

Had a quick look at the Foynes harbour stats again. The maximum beam that the port can take is 29m.

The average beam on a supertanker is 55m.

The max length of ship that the harbour can take is 194m, with the tanker pier being 91m in length (generally a tanker pier can take a tanker just over twice the length of the pier)

The average length of a supertanker is over 300m.

You have responsibility as a messenger D-A-V-E:
    - what paper did you read this in? Get us an online link maybe.

No offence mate but it just seems like some bored person's fantasy. Be that you or some journalist, I cannot tell.

People on this site here want to read informative updates on life in Limerick city and the broader region and discuss it. What is the point in posting fantasy with loads of pics from the web of boats?

I know you are just repeating what you read, that is why I said the paper is spouting a fairytale not you.

The Shannon estuary itself just cannot support supertankers, let alone Foynes port.

There is not the continuous depth nor width in the estuary to allow a single supertanker to come much distance, let alone try to pass Tarbert and make it's way to Foynes

Dave why would it help Limerick City? Its in Foynes....not town...surely it would benefit somewhere like Newcastle West and Foynes itself more than town?

Just read this in the post, it's an article about a book some economist has written about Ireland, apparently he reckons if it's done Limerick could be the richest city in Ireland in the next 20 years, but he's an economist, not a marine engineer, so economically i'm sure his theory is sound but realistically a non runner.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,097 ✭✭✭✭zuroph

    its a total misquote.
its page 5 of the limerick post, and its an economist whos released a book.
IN HIS OPINION, a superport built off the coast outside foynes WOULD be a huge income generator, IF IT WAS BUILT, by 2050.

its on page 5 of the post, it actually said it would have to be built offshore as the ships wouldnt be able to go up river, we would get rich because 'it would be a huge revenue generator, the price of importing into ireland would go through the floor'

i didnt think ireland needed this many ships to import stuff?

    Lol,

    Dave,

there's a big difference between plans to build a super-port, and one economist theorising that one might be a good revenue generator in the future.

ok guys listen lets not kill D-A-V-E yet................. i have good news and bad news

good news is he did read it in the limerick post. its an article written by colum coomey on page 5

bad news is its an article about a new book written by UL lecturererererer Dr Stephen Kinsella. in the book he mentions what Limerick COULD be like in 2050. he goes on to say that if we constructed a supertanker port on the west of ireland (foynes the paper seems to speculate) it would make Limerick th richest city in Ireland. it also mentions a few things that should be done with the money................................. good ideas and stuff but its all 1 persons ideas of what should happen not could or would happen.

D-A-V-E tut tut tut not reading the article shame on you:D

Dont we have a Christmas tree that looks like that floating in the shannon every year.
All we need now is the Limerick 'in crowd' celebrities(im looking at you, top 50 sexiest men) and a big casino and were nearly there.

a long long time ago while alcan was being built, 5,000 employed in the construction of it, a group of goverment agencys got togeather, so after much chin wigging etc got a brain wave of building an oil therminal,(change of dealer required i.m.o.) they bought up a big moxey of land on the shoreline, down ballylongford way, as the water was so deep they could not test it with the old drop a stone in it trick, no money wasted in them days, the idea being they could start up another massive construction job, and like today no one at the helm saw the recession coming, like now except then it was state money, now it is bank money, sure no difference anyway

Well if you had read the article it actually focuses on the benefits of such a port for Limerick City so it is pretty relevant.

poor dave, being picked on when the article isint complete rubbish.

If you guys look it up, there were proposals to build a large super port and possible rail link to a tunnel connected to ireland the reasons being that ,
1 the shannon esturay can accomidate this kind of ship,
2 is one of only a few places in europe that can
3 the exising ports such as rotterdam can not increase capacity as the english channel is reaching the ful capacity of ships it can take without serious accidents being regular occurances
4 more capacity will be needed.

other possible locations i remeber reading was in the very north of scotland in the old royal navay base (possibly scapa flow in the orkneys ?) and some where in portugal.

the shannon location would be closest to the heart of europe, but would require investment in the port, the tunnel and the rail link.

dont have time to look this stuff up now, but i think the engineers society of ireland did up a proposal on it, if ye can not find it in the next few hours ill look for it when i get a chance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 425 ✭✭daithicarr

    found it

    http://www.euro-case.org/publications/transport/TransportIreland.pdf

of course 2050 might be a bit late to impact on most of us as we should all be retired by then or nearing it.

Plus FF will still be in power and they dont have the forsight to pull the finger out for something like this
