Going down tomorrow. It's down for being from 10:30 till 12. Anyone know details on this? Will it be big? seats hard to get? presentations just walk in and out or more of a closed thing?
What about windows 7 give aways? I heard they were for volunteers. I signed up for the event on Microsoft website and THEN signed up as a volunteer. It just gave me the same page and i didn't get any details about it. There were a number of different stories though
    volunteers only
robin hood style for everyone who attends.
windows 7 basic as a download for everyone who attends.

There are 3 sessions tomorrow, 1 for students, 1 for IT professionals and 1 for the public. All require pre-registration and all are completely booked up (i.e. no places available).

There's talk of everyone attending getting a copy of win7 basic but afaik Microsoft have said nothing on this. I would have thought it would be a raffle or prize give away type thing rather then just handing freebies out late late toy show style.

    Where are they being held?

Quick google search yields this: http://www.dit.ie/news/archivecurrentyear/windows7/

Quick google search also says Kevin Steet is in Dublin 8.

cheers for this part "Gleeson Theatre"

Thanks for that but infact that link isn't what i was looking for. I always google before hand. I'm already signed up for the morning run. I wanted to know basicly was it a walk around or a seating with talks and presentations up front where you might be noticed coming in late or leaving half way. or in shorthand:
presentations just walk in and out or more of a closed thing

While you're being a smart ass, look at the comment above mine, i.e. the one I was responding to.

The event held 2 weeks ago (that I couldn't attend but was invited to) was basically just MS guys doing a walk-through of features and what not. I imagine this is very similar

I'm a night course student and our lecturer took the entire class down for the last session of the evening which was supposed to be a bridge between home users, students and IT professionals. Everyone got disk versions of Win7 ultimate, both 32 and 64 bit.

The presentation was ok... nothing revolutionary was shown but the poor chap on stage was given some awful questions from the crowd, particularly one eejit who really wanted to catch the poor chap out and make MS look bad generally ("how come I can't use the numbers above 9 to do shortcuts....?" your keypad only goes from 0 to 9)

Anyway, delighted with my free swag!

Yea i got myself a copy aswell , too bad there where not more copies for students , like i know people in the morning showcase did not get any copies .

But the was mainly just an all Students crowd , i knew the I.T. pro people would get a copy.

is dit not a member of the MDSN Acadmic Alliance ? i looked it up and only the business school seems to be down ? cause if they are and your a student in dit you should be able to download a free copy that way.

Not all students are. We have been through this on the thread in bargain alerts. Only kevin street is down on the list afk. Im a Bolton Street student was looking into it because Microsofts deffense for not giving it free to students while giving it free to all the other events was that we can get it for free anyway to which I pointed out we cant.

dit is down twice on the list , but only department listed is business , i dont see anything about kevin street ?

Actually tests show windows 7 works better then xp. Trying it out on old pcs shows windows 7 works with lot worse spec then xp. You're able to emulate windows xp on windows 7 and uh... oh yeah everyone on the internet disagrees with you. Google windows 7 review...

    Stick to the topic.

For the record, as a everyday Mac user, I upgraded my XP gaming box to 7 yesterday and the performance boost was unreal. 64-bit ultimate edition.

Anyway, fair play to Microsoft for coming out, facing the crowd and being proud in their product. It's the first time I've seen the company actually bother with such a public display of their stuff. The guy (Will) was very good and took some people at the late session who were berating him quite well and did a good job.

Always nice to get free swag, too!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,190 ✭✭✭wolfric

Yeah if they dared do that for vista they'd just get slaughtered with presentations and difficult questions and booed off the stage.

Bryan Duggan sent round an email after a lot of feedback saying they are setting this up and we should be able to d/l a free copy of Win7 Professional by the end of the month

If they were to bring in Windows Server 2008 with Windows 7 in Kevin st. it would basically eliminate most of the lab technians incompetence. Instead of ghosting labs for a week and a half, they can have it done in 30 minutes.

Also, since they're in to their virtualisation looks like 7 might be the right option.

Cool, I will just take the free copy, sell it, and donate
the full amount to the Linux Foundation. Cheers Microsoft:D

Microsoft controlling over 90% of the world OS market share is very unhealthy for computing in general. Choice is always good no matter what the subject. Remember, competition breeds innovation. This principle does not only apply to computing.

Lets keep it on topic folks. Remember what happened last time?

Back on topic, Win 7 sure does look pretty:p

yeah... using windows 7 atm, i love using operating systems that take up 90% market share.
It makes me sleep better at night.

And whoever made the comment about the windows server 2k8, i completely agree. The labs are an absolute joke atm. Cant go through one lab without something screwy happening.

Anybody heard anything about this yet? Tried sending an email to Hugh O'Donnell (he seems to be the contact in the Faculty of Business) but got no reply. :(

Have been using the RC for the past few months and seems pretty good, a lot less frustrating and more intuitive than Vista IMO:D

I saw bryan today and asked about the free win7 and he said something about dit not being partnered with them and that it would take a little longer. payment should be sorted by monday at which point it'll take a week or 2 before it becomes available

Ok thanks for that... I'm hoping that'll be open to all Kevin St. student's (I'm in Faculty of Science) :D

Hmmm, not sure, think it might just be for staff and students in the School of Computing, but we'll have to wait and see

I bet it's going to be home starter or basic edition:D
You can't even change your wallpaper in starter.

Drip feed a controlled amount, until a tolerance develops. Just like the drug peddlers...
