The route is an undulating thru Wicklow
    Just your average 200km Audax
    A few ups and downs

Is there a map of the route?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21 Arranmoreelw

Route sheets will be sent out when entry fee and two stamped addressed envelopes are received
This is the norm for organizer's that I have experienced
You will have been over most of the roads many times before

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 385 ✭✭emty

But if you put up a map of the route people will be able to do it without paying the five euro :D

I wonder if everyone's favourite junction will be used.

A bit defensive about the route there..
I think people want a bit of an idea where it goes, some towns or climbs mentioned would be a good start.

Remember your supposed to be PROMOTING the event not giving people reasons to blinside it ;)

Indeed, a very strange attitude from a promoter. Well if you are not interested in promoting your event, then I am not interested in attending it.

Is it possible to show up on the day and then pay reqd sum?

Not sure if I would be available, but would like to do something around then and hopeful that I may?

Also, +1 on the route map thing. I guess in my time here I have sensed that it is an audax tradition, maybe even requirement (ie sheet, not map).
Hpwever many of us do not really understand or appreciate it. A map is easier for thickos like myself to follow rather than trying to navigate by road numbers, right turn at the big blue house behind the 3rd hill on the left sort of thing.

    Thanks.

Ah, Immovable Object meets Irresistible Force another Immovable Object...the terse, work-it-out-for-yourself style bred by Audax UK versus the high noise-to-signal ratio of the internet forum.

I confess I am also a crusty old bastard intrigued by this mystery tour approach so I will be doing this, though it's sort of messing up my plans for taking it easy until the New Year. I'll drop a few hints about the nature of the route once I see the routesheet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 385 ✭✭emty

    Promoter??
Anyone that know's me can take it that Arranmoreelw is a good guy and that trying to get people to commit to an Audax event in advance cuts down on all the hassle involved in trying to get the whole thing moving relatively smoothly.
Please feel free to organise your own event so that we can all take pot shots at it.

Having been over the route at the weekend
I ve finally come up with a finalized route
    Its Bray,Tinahely, Dunlavin,Wicklow,Bray with some info control,s
A pencil/pen or marker to write info on card would be advisable
Hope this might help you to begin your quest for St Quentin Yvelines 2011 PBP

The worst is that you get lost in the middle of Wicklow and its dark and raining. Your phone has no coverage, and you have no money to get food.
You also have 2 punctures and your front and rear mechs have ceased up.
Also, the wind is incessant, and you can faintly hear wolves howling in the distant . . . but the howls are getting louder.

    Is that what you mean??

Ah, I remember that ride. Great days, Gay, great days.

I posted my cheque last week - I am agog with anticipation to see if the postman will bring my routesheet tomorrow.

    "randonneuring" or "audax", .
Randonneuring is a style of bicycle riding that requires covering long-distances over an unmarked course of challenging terrain within a generously allotted time period of almost continuous riding. Riders do not compete against their fellow cyclists, but only against their own personal best, the weather and the mind's desire for sleep. Skills in self-sufficiency, bicycle mechanics, night-riding and endurance are all valued over ability to cycle at racing speeds or with racing strategies

This maybe why you don't get to see a map on the Interweb:D

Anybody else get the routesheet in the post this evening and think "bloody hell, what was I thinking?"

OK, here's my best stab at mapping it...the section from Slieve Maan to Knockanna is a bit speculative, but it seems a reasonable match for what's on the sheet.

Doing my best with my route sheet and Mapsource. Can't really make it out till Glencree but after that most of it makes sense...I think.

BTW I may not be doing this after all. Knee still healing and not nearly enough miles under the belt. If I do abandon ship I'll gladly drive the route and offer support, carry gear and water etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,352 ✭✭✭rottenhat

Yeah, I think the mention of the R116 on the sixth line is a bit of a red herring. Basically we're just riding south on the N11 to the Herbert Road footbridge, crossing the N11, taking the next exit on the way back into town and rolling straight up to Enniskerry, then through the village and direct to Glencree. That's my reading of it, anyway.

After that the fun stuff begins.

Shame about the knee but you'd be wise not to push it - I have no idea why I'm heading out on a 200 in the middle of November except that it's there.

Well, I'm certainly not condoning it. On the other hand, if you were standing there at the Centra at the end handing out hot ports, I wouldn't turn one down.

(Thinking about doing this for my 200 next year - final control might be my living room)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,223 ✭✭✭✭Lumen

This sounds like great fun, I'm definitely on for the January one (don't have enough miles in my legs currently).

I had been thinking of doing this, but the OH is on a course on 14th so I'll be child minding. A friend was telling me yesterday that he thought Audax routes/events could be done at any time once you followed the route sheets and checkpoints. If that's feasible I was thinking about doing it on Sunday 15th instead. Can anyone tell me if that's officially OK, or would I just be going for a 200km spin ?

I have planeed to do this, but bike is broken.
May think about doing it on the tricross. Would be slow, but probably comfy.

There is a distinction between calendar rides and permanents, permanents being routes that can be ridden any time, you just have to arrange a date with the organiser and get a card from him. There's no real structure established for permanents in Ireland but it is something that's on the agenda all right. So far as I'm aware, permanents are not accepted for the various ACP awards (Super Randonneur, Randonneur 5000 etc) and can't be used as qualifiers for PBP but otherwise are considered the equivalent of a calendar ride.

It's generally considered to be tougher to ride something as a permanent than a calendar ride as you can't sit on any wheels, don't have the benefit of multiple heads navigating, control points may be harder to find if you don't start at the standard time etc.

I would think the Lumpy 200 would be eminently suitable for a permanent since I don't think John has any intention of manning any of the control points (except perhaps the start), but you'd need to check with him if he's willing to do it that way.

Not a problem to ride on Sunday but I would advise safety in number's is best if you could make it on Saturday

Shame it's the other knee now. The left one cleared up grand after the 300.
I'm tweaking I few things and a spin this weekend may well make or break things.

I would obviously prefer to go on Saturday but unfortunately it's not going to happen. Apart from anything else I have serious doubts of my ability to keep up with Rottenhat and the rest of you !
So as it's OK with Arranmoreelw I'll go on Sunday. ROK ON, you're welcome to get lost with me if it suits you, although I'm sure the numbers on Saturday will be pretty low, and I don't want to be responsible for making them even lower !
Arranmoreelw - I'll post you a cheque tomorrow. Do I need to pay for a CI day licence at the same time, and if so how much ?
    Cheers, LastGasp.

I can only issue day licence's on the day of the event
Hence I don't need to rise two days in a row early and I would hope to be recovering from the ride on Sunday
Also info control's are on route and questions will be on the cards on the day of the event when issued prior to 8am start.
Feel free to ride it if you wish - I can send you a route sheet to follow however you will not be covered by insurance unless you have your own and you will not be able to claim in case of incident. Failing this the same route is on the calander again for 23rd January 2010.

I'm not quite sure I've got this right. Licence and Insurance are not an issue for me. I assume you can send me the route when I send you the cheque. You seem to be saying there is another card issued on the morning. What is that, and can I get one ? If you can't send it in advance I could probably get to the Saturday start and meet up before you lot head off. Where are you starting from ?
    23rd JANUARY ? - brrrrrrr....
    Thanks, LastGasp.

Brevet cards are issued prior to start with info control questions
so nobody knows the answer in advance and takes a short cut on the route . This route is not yet designed as a perm so can only be ridden on the day you may forward a cheque with one SAE and fee if you so wish to ride it but no card [brevet] will be issued.
