i think they're just desperate to win a war, cos they've lost their bollocks in iraq and whatever-stan they're fighting in now. and since there's nobody on the moon to retaliate...

wtf.. There was a treaty signed in 1967 that prohibits just that
It exclusively limits the use of the Moon and other celestial bodies to peaceful purposes and expressly prohibits their use for testing weapons of any kind, conducting military maneuvers, or establishing military bases, installations, and fortifications (Art.IV)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outer_Space_Treaty

What's the point in anything anymore :(

    They're not testing wepons
The Cabeus crater was selected because it's likely to show definitive proof of water in the moon, based on the information from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, Lunar Prospector, Chandrayaan-1, and JAXA's Kaguya spacecraft. The bombing is designed to measure the proportion of water—ice to dust ratio—in lunar regolith.

It's research into the contents of the moon, not blowing it up for the craic

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,871 ✭✭✭Conor108

Ok its not actually a bomb so I imagine it wouldn't violate the treaty?

Its an expended fuel tank IIRC, and they'll scan the debris cloud for signs of water

Quoted for you kids on Boards mobile.
If you have nothing to do on Friday, October 9, at 7:31AM Eastern/4:31AM Pacific, reserve that spot for some serious space fireworks. At that time you can see how NASA bombs the Moon from orbit using this huge thing:

    Picture

That's a Centaur, the upper stage of the Atlas 5 rocket that took the Lunar CRater Observing and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) to our beloved Selene. It will impact against the Cabeus crater at 5,600mph, causing another crater about one third the size of a football field.

They set us up the bomb, now all our base belong to them.

So they find a renewable (presumably) resource on the moon (water) that opens so many more doors and now they want to blow it up..?

What the hell is America's fascination with bombing things they shouldn't? I don't get it.

Apparantly the yanks are set to bomb the moon as part of some "scientific experiment" or other..

This from the country where 13% of the population think parts of the moon are actually made from cheese.

If you think that's scary, you don't want to know what Bush thought about the city of Philadelphia during his days in office.

I think Obama wants to bomb a few moon mountains away to make room for a KFC...just incase

    pfft, semantics tbh

Anything that could be used to cause mass devastation on earth when applied in the same manner as in outer-space, is imo a weapon

There's something called a "Rod from God" which is just a big pole with no explosives that's been developed as a weapon, it causes damage through kinetic energy.. how is this any different?

Jesus we're calling the Americans stupid, people actually genuinely believe, in Ireland, that Americans are REALLY bombing the moon.

It's basically a big block of metal that'll be released from a probe in orbit. It'll slam into the moon's surface and kick up a load of dust. The dust will then be analysed by the probe.

I've read a lot of drivel in my times as a boardie, but for the love of peace, you guys sound like a bunch of *uppets. Please don't take that the wrong way,
but come on, bombing the moon? they've bombed everywhere else. Really sad.

They are unable to get the required drilling equipment onto the moon,
at reasonable cost, so the next best thing is to drop a bomb and analyse the cloud of dust for water particles.

The moon is already covered in massive craters, so what is the big deal.
You sound like a bunch of interstellar nimbies.

Finding an actual supply of water at the bottom of the new crater, would be the dawn of a new era.

It better not be the acre of moon I bought on ebay or there's gonna be an asskickin'

    Yeah but at what cost?
It doesn't mean anything, The moon cannot support life, The water will most likely be in small amounts.
This may totally backfire and we will be all covered in moondust.

Well, if the water IS renewable (hence "presumably"). Nobody really knows how it got there yet (that I'm aware of?) so it's still got potential to be a renewable resource, doesn't it? It got there somehow.

We're obviously running out of freshwater here. Clearly there's no practical use for the water that's on the moon as of yet but it still opens more doors than closing them. Theoretically could put it to some use. Instead they want to bomb it.

Surprised you guys haven't heard of it? It's been a pretty big news topic for a couple years now in Canada because we have the Great Lakes. There's a big water shortage issue lately. Maybe it's just a north American thing?

    eg.
Here in the Great Lakes region, a fourth year in a row of declining water levels has caused millions of dollars in losses for shipping companies, marinas and other businesses and prompted further restrictions on future water withdrawals for expanding suburbs.

"A lot of people just can't believe that we may be running out of water, living this close to the Great Lakes," said Sarah Nerenberg, a water engineer with the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission, which conducted the study on shortages.

I got a letter from my cousin in Canada.
Serious water shortage...... the stamp was stuck on with a pin.

I cannot imagine a future where it would be cheaper to extract miniscule amounts of water from moonrock and ship it back here rather than simply desalinating sea-water.

Even converting polar ice into drinking water would probably literally be 1million times cheaper.
