    Ladies,

I need help, but not medical advice don't want anyone getting into trouble! And Boys this thread isn't for you!

But I'm currently curled up in bed with pain killers taken and a hot water bottle on my tummy and still in agony...yes it's the monthly visitor.

I can't keep going through this every month, they never used to be bad but for the last year or so they they are a killer, so basically I want to know does anyone go through the same, or have you in the past? Is there a specialist or someone similar I can go see or what should I do? I need to get this sorted, I can't call in sick to work every month. :(

    Thanks in advance.

a soluable solpadeine, warmth, sugary tea and steering away from fizzy stuff till the pains gone is usually good!

I chose Implanon for this reason, I'm sure there are other options out there.

Go to your doctor and see what they are.

You should definatly go see your gp If your periods are that bad, Or see a doctor in a well womens clinic.

You poor thing, hope you feel better!

go to the doctor if its that bad. it could be a number of things, or it could just be completely normal & bad luck that it affects you so badly, but you wont know until you go to the doctor.

I was put on ponston (spelling!!!) and other strong pain killers - didn't help. I had tests with a specialist (scans etc) and all was normal apparently. The pains only eased/went when I saw a nutritionist. She took full medical history, revised my eating habits and advised me on new eating habits. The more I stick to this the better. When I let it slip a do get monthly pain but not as bad. It was hard but worth it.

    IMO:
1st - get GP to refer you to a specialist to rule out anything serious.
    2nd - see a nutritionist.

I went because of a different health issue and couldn't believe it when the pains went! I have let it slip lately but will get back on track asap. I can PM you the name of who I went to if you want. Where are you based?

I'm down in Wicklow but I drive, how much did it cost just out of curiousity? Thats what's been putting me off tbh.

Interesting that a nutritionist helped. Since I gave up meat a few years back I've had almost zero pains. Except was on holiday in Spain earlier this year and was eating a really high-protein diet for a couple of weeks (fish every night) - and subsequently had a painful period.

I'm using implanon and my periods are so much lighter than before and I didnt even have a heavy period to begin with :D
Beware though, when you first get implanon in the initial 3 months can be awful, side effects wise but periods are lighter almost straight away, well that was in my case anyway.
I never get pain anymore either, maybe a slight discomfort but thats it. I had pain which was very bad before, felt faint, sick etc but I took two nurofen plus tablets and shortly afterwards I was fine again... I am one of those people who cannot swallow tablets so i have to chew them first....this perhaps helps the tablet work faster. Hope this helps :)

ah hun, i feel so bad for ya!:(

when i was like 17 one of my best mates suffered really really badly from pain and other side effects like dizziness and even vomiting. I got her to ask her doc about going on the pill and it really helped calm the symptoms down. She also got some strong painkillers prescribed which helped too.

Going on the pill made mine go away completely. But it depends on the person, and the pill. I've been off it now for a few months and the pains are back in full swing..grr.

My doctor doesnt recommend implanon anymore, she says that in her expierence the majority of people are unhappy with it.
There are other other contraceptive options though.....so it definitely worth going to the doc.

If you are going to a nutrionist, I would recommend you use one that was recommended via my doctor. Because anyone can set themselves up, and call themselves a nutritionist. The field is lacking proper regulation.
Starflower or Evening Primrose oil, are old remedies for painful periods. I used to find taking my EFA's a huge help.

Hope your feeling better now! Chocolate cheers me up no end.

As a matter of interest, what changes did you make to your diet?

Nurofen Plus is my fallback option when I really need to keep going. I've had nearly every prescription painkiller going, none were really that effective. Never thought about a nutritionist though. I fully expect I'm the only woman alive who is looking forward to the menopause!

If you're considering seeing someone to discuss nutrition, go to a dietitian. Anyone can set up shop and call themselves nutritionists, but dietitians actually have qualifications.

I used to be in the same boat as you I once fainted at work from the pain and once a month I had to take it off because for the whole day I would throw up so no painkillers could sort me out!! I'm on the pill now though and they are not half as bad! Still have mild pains but nothing to compare! For me anyway the pill was the only way to go :)

Yeah, I'm the same. Once I went on the pill they weren't half as bad and usually now its every 2nd monthly cycle that gives me trouble.

I used to have the same problem! I even fainted while shopping one day and landed on top of a poor old woman in the queue!

I had to take 2 days off of school/work a month cuz the first two days were agony. I'd vomit most times and would be stuck in bed unable to move. My guidance counsellor even brought me in some herbal tea to see if that would help!

I tried everything. Prescription tabs, over the counter tabs, hot water bottles, exercise (just made me sweaty AND sore! :(), different diet and then eventually I went to the docs to get the Pill. I got it purely for contraceptive reasons but it's calmed down the pain by about 80% :)

It's all about finding what's right for you and your body. Best of luck OP!

The person I went to assesses everyone individually - therefore a different eating plan could be advised for different people, depending on you health problems, weight, family history etc. The advise I was given might not be given to you. Like I said I went with a different problem but she took my whole diet, lifestyle and health into account.

When I went to see the nutritionist I was not aware that there is a difference between a nutritionist and dietitian. It would be best to make appointment via a GP. Having said that I am delighted with who I went with. She obviously knows what she was on about.

I wasn't asking so much for myself, but out of general interest.
    Thanks anyway.

Deffo cut out alcohol and sugar.

Take evening primrsoe oil form day 1 every day up to ovulation and flaxseed oil every day thereafter.
(EPO will cause uterine contractions which you don't want in the second part of the month -lutal phase leading up to your period)

Magnesium is also very helpful, take daily.

Ponstan aren't worth a pi$$ quite frankly and are given as they are an anti-inflammitory. I would go straight in with the big guns as soon as you know your period is coming on. 2 soluble solpadeine or Neurofen plus and keep well topped up. Contains codeine so don't overdo it though as you will chunder!

When the pain is established its usually fighting a losing battle trying to get rid of it then.

Excersise, windmills, straddle the floor and touch alternate toes will also help.

    Good luck.

Moonbaby I wasn't trying to brush you off but as I said advise is different for everyone. This would be an extremely long post if I listed all the advise I was given. Plus I can't be sure which advise was for my period pains and which was for other problems or if that even matters. I could have been lacking vitamins and minerals you/someone else are not etc. And I am very thin so if you followed my eating plan and you/someone else are average weight or above you could put on a lot of weight and you could end up loosing out on nutrition you need more than me.

Oh no you've taken me up wrong.
I didn't think you were offhand. I understand your point.
I originally posted to ask if you had an allergy test, but then reading your post again I assumed that wasn't so.
I guess without that question, my last post is kinda pointless.

I didn't have an allergy test.

I had one done in the past. Load of crap IMO.

I spend approx. seven years in a similar situation, spending a couple of days in bed every month and taking painkillers galore. In the end I moved from Cork to Limerick and hence had to change GP. The first time I had to get perscription painkillers for the pain the GP was worried that I was in so much pain and for the first time ever I was told that it was not right. She sent me to a gynae and within 3 months I was on a operating table and was diagnosed with Endometriosis. The relief was inmense that at last a reson was found as to why I was in so much pain each month. Since then I have been monitored by both the GP and gynae and at last I am managing a whole period without any pain relief.
My advice would be to realise that pain like that needs to be investigated further. A good GP will put you on the right road and hopefully will find a reason why its so sore for you. Btw chocolate is also great at helping you feel better so enjoy some, you deserve it!!!!!:)
