They just showed a clip for the Thursday night programme at the end of the show tonight.

Showed footage from streets and cycle lanes, looked a bit scary tbh. Also showed bits of interviews with the Dublin City Council cycle officer and one of the heads of the cycle campaigns.

    Should be interisting.

45 threads on the one subject!

Hrm, the number 4 doesn't really work with strikethrough. Ah well, 45 it is.

So this is the official thread then? I have a feeling there will be a slow build up followed by an explosion of interest late on thursday...just in time for friday madness!

I reckon the prime time for cycling into town is before 8:30am and cycle home before 4:30pm. This suits me as there's a lot less traffic and means I get home early.

What's your prime time for cycling?

Well since everyone else started a thread on this I feel left out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

Odd that they haven't come on here looking for opinions/volunteers like they've done on the politics forum. This being the biggest cycling forum in the country an' all...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,584 ✭✭✭✭tunney

Probably because they are going to base their "report" on their assumptions and preconceptions.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say that I can just imagine who will be interviewed for this - a collection of
    (1) Lentil eating bearded sandal wearing academic that is commututing on a 30 yr old steel frame,
    (2) Some 'hip' twentysomething hipster on a battered fixie,
    (3) and a poor old pob (probably an accountant/lawyer working in the IFSC) who is hoping to use the bike (from Bike to Work Scheme) for commuting and the odd triathalon.

Hard to tell form the trailer what direction it will take. They have got a lot more sensationalist in the last year or two but their "investigates" side has been v. good imho.

The trailers had a lot of action which was clearly from a camera on a bike with buses cutting off our intrepid reporter. If this is the case then could hardly complain as it is real footage. But of course which clips they select would be an issue and of course there won't be any footage of people sailing along through phoenix park (until a commuter race breaks out!) so all in all will probably be "look at how dangerous cycling is can't somebody do something" glass half empty or full?

Bah, you're just feeling left out. If you're going to make a pitch for including yourself, you'll need to complete the following stereotype:

    (4) ....

I'm a 40-year old, occasionally lentil eating, ex-academic, who rides a 50+ year old battered steel frame fixie - I could cover 1 and 2 for them - might have to use a false beard though

I'm one of the cyclist interviewed in this program, and also I made some of the footage.

    - I'm a 35yo father of 1 (and 1 coming)
    - I'm commuting on my bike for quite a few years from Terenure to the center
    - I ride a Trek 7300, with mudgards, racks, half plastic pedal clips.
    - I drop my son at the creche in the morning using a special seat on the front.

All footage has been done by people similar to myself. We didn't took chances to get better (ie more sensational) images. The only bias there is that sometimes I waited for more traffic and more HGV to come to my direction, just to avoid having to make 10 hours of footage (I have another job).

I obviously haven't seen the final cut, but it real seems to be a fair report on the commuter scene.

Thank you for coming on here and sharing that. Despite my earlier sarcastic comments (wit???) I am looking forward to this. Can you say, does it focus overly on the dangers or the pleasures of the commute?
Also, while we can all appreciate the dangers presented by careless drivers, does the program focus in some way on the behaviour of cyclists as a group.

    Thank.

What route do you take and at what time? Really don't want to see my fat ass in the background of a shot :D

Seriously though, fair play. It's especially heartening that they're interviewing someone who's realised the roads aren't actually that dangerous, so much so that you bring your child to creche on the bike.

You mean like ganging up on errant bus drivers and beating them into submission?

It focus on the dangers, real or felt by cyclists in the city. I don't know what will be kept from my interview, but my emphasis was on perceived sense of danger, an on the very high level of fatal accidents due to HGV's relative to in fact their small number on the roads of city center.

Its great that your posting here, it'll certainly give an added value to watching it... question is are you up for the inevitable slagging you will receive after airing it???:D

Shame you didnt post up pre filming, we would have sorted you out with a boards kit!

Pretty sure I got filmed for this recently. Well, not exactly for it, but I did notice a man with a fancy camera lurking on College Green last week as I whizzed by...

Unlike you, seamus, I do hope he got a shot of my ass. It would mean he didn't get a shot of my slight paunch. :D

Hmm. I use mine as a substitute for core strength to keep weight off my wrists. Just rest paunch on thighs and it's all fine... ;)

Miriam is so gorgeous. Intelligent. Fertile. Articulate.
Tom McGurk really messed up that one.

I'm glad that Caoilfhionn Shanley is doing the cycling piece. Her voice is quite soothing. And she's a much better presenter of 5-7 Live on RTE Radio One than Mary Wilson (who she fills in for during Mary's holidays), they should give her that gig.

I see the footage of the near misses are on the south quays near heuston, and also on wellington quay pinch near the old viking boat bus stop.

HGV's getting the blame of cycling deaths and accidents... saying that the ban isnt 100% working.
