How many calories in a fish oil tablet?!

(Wasn't sure which forum was best for this, figured it covers a lot of areas!)

This question has come up in two totally unrelated situations recently.

    1) In WW meeting, somebody asks the leader "How many points in a fish oil tablet?" and gets the reply "Ooh, good question, I'll check it out and let you know next week". I haven't been back since.

    2) My pregnant friend was recommended to take these by her doctor. Her husband's first reaction was "Will they make you fat?"
(They're not Irish and had never heard of taking fish oils before, if that helps explain anything...)

Am I alone in thinking the medicinal etc benefits of fish oils should more than outweigh any calorific concerns? And surely there's only about 5ml max in each capsule anyway?!

(Or is my flippant attitude to consumption the reason I was in WW in the first place? :D)

    around 10 calories

edit: Taking a decent fish oil tablet will help with weight loss. I wouldn't even count those calories.

And here I was all ready to go off on the OP for counting calories in tablets of all things. :pac:

I definitely think the pros outweigh the cons on fish oil tablets. I don't understand why anyone would even count calories in regards to them, I mean for god's sake, it's not as if you're eating the whole jar in one go, it's one or maybe two a day!

Ah, to be fair, if you don't know, and you're counting your calories, there's no harm in asking (what if it were 50 like? That's a biscuit!). When I'm dieting to make weight for a fight I count the calories in _EVERYTHING_. I'm talking about the 15 calories worth of milk I have in my coffee. The only exception I make is for the fish oil tablets.

Very important not to overdose on fish oils tho, and thats why it's a good idea to take them in capsule form.

a GP friend of mine had a teetotal patient with an impeccable diet diagnosed with Primary Biliary Cirrhosis(PBC) last year, and nobody could figure out how his liver was in such a state, as it was akin to an alcoholics liver. Turns out the man had been taking codliver oil in liquid form for years but had never used a spoon, just swigged from the bottle, and had basically(in non-scientific terms) knackered his liver as a result.

So take capsules or use a spoon:p

    FYI

    1 gram of carbohydrate = 4 calories
    1 gram of protein = 4 calories
    1 gram of fat = 9 calories
    1 gram of alcohol = 7 calorie

That said even though fat as more calories per gram it is hughly important especailly if you are trying reduced your fat levels

    +1

Its a common misconception amongst (mostly) women that all fats are bad, and they shy away from them. There are some fats that are essential to the body.

The irony is, that women who avoid eating anything with the word 'fat' in it, often stock up in supplements which provide the exactly what they are afraid of, and cutting out of their diet. The mind boggles! :pac:

How very depressing that any woman could be concerned about their weight to the extent that they are afraid to take a tablet of fish oil!

Yeah, chip fat is not the same as the fats found in e.g. nuts and pulses, which are absolutely essential.

So get that hummus into y'all! :)
