Week 4 thread

Never too early to start this i suppose

Oakland travel to Houston to take on the Texans. After an opening day close game with the divisional rival Chargers, and a second week win at KC, they were blown out in week 3 by the Broncos (a surprise at 3-0). I can see a win for oakland here but it all depends on OFFTHEMarcus Russel not being his useless self I suppose. The ground game and defense will need to carry him and the team to a win, and a 2-2 record after 4 games.

In the other main games, No4 is up against the packers on monday night, the Ravens are at New England, the Chargers are at the 1-2 Steelers, and in the AFC east the Dolphins host the Bills.

I've been reading a lot about Jamarcus Russell and Raiders. Most of it has been quite scathing about him, but Nick Halling (Ok, I know the guy doesn't know everything and he can be a pain in the arse) was of the opinion that the Raiders aren't playing the game to Russell's strengths. Any opinions.

Week 4 Game of the Week is Saints-Jets. It's gonna be great. Also looking forward to Ravens-Patriots.

Not to be rude, but there's an entire thread related to Jamarcus Russell.

Edit: Sorry, reread that and it did look kind of rude. I was just pointing it out because you might get more feedback on your post there. :)

    Edit 2: Saints-Jets??? I think a few million Packer/Viking fans might disagree ;)

Good athleticism by Bodden on that pick, but what was Flacco thinking? Not quite there yet, despite everything.

Peyton Manning playing out of his skin 20/24 248 yards with two Touchdowns.

Third all-time NFL touchdown record someone said? Not bad. He's having a great season. Goes to show though, new head coach, offseason upheaval, lose the receiver you've been throwing to your whole career, it doesn't matter if you're Peyton Manning.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,067 ✭✭✭tallaghtoutlaws

Wow the Ravens are really destroying themselves with stupid penalties. Unsportsmanlike contact on the bench straight after an illegal contact penalty. Both TD drives for the Pats with Roughing the passer. Idiots and im saying this as a Pats fan.

Watching this game. Manning is on fire spreading the ball around the field in true Manning fashion. He is looking good tonight.

That fumble by Brady is why your Left tackle is so important.

Johnny Knox was some pick up by the Bears, 102 yard return today and another solid receiving performance. Has been very consistant thus far.

Bengals just can't catch a break. Their kicker just had an XP blocked.

its not about catching a break its about fundamentals. if you dont knock the ball down or down convert pats you dont deserve to win games

Just read on the eagles message board that eli manning went down holding his heal during the KC game. They were saying bruised heal. Your Achilles tendon is in that general area. Even though I'm an Eagle fan wouldnt like to see the guy injured.

Yeah but the chances of missing a PAT in that situation are pretty low I'd imagine. Close to 5/10%.

Yeah when I saw he'd done that at half-time I was just thinking "damn, he's going to be tired now".

Hence why it goes back to fundamentals.

    Slow/bad Snap
    Bad Hold
    Bad Kick

And looking at the Vid it was a bad kick. He didnt get underneath it enough.

EDIT: just realised you were talking about PAT but again the point above covers it.

    BAd snap on the PAT.

That might be the flukiest touchdown by a 49er I've seen in some time. Don't know what the punt returner was thinking.

Another great day for Russell and OAK in general. No ground game today to speak of. 12/33 for under 150 yards and no TDs is shocking. HOW LONG WILL THIS LAST?

As I said on the JMR thread the offense was shocking today. Their whole offense is a bust think the majority of them can join JMR on the scrap heap. Once again you can see morale is low and the lack of caring and effort is kiling them.

well I am! :p lets cut our losses and bring in a new Qb. This season is another confined to the losing season pile.

We do need some better coaching but a good qb will go a long way to a better game. Russell gives 0 leadership in the huddle.

I've always thought that Andy Lee is one of the better Punters in the League.

Defense looks good having returned an INT and a fumble for a TD but then it is the Rams

Great day for the Patriots. We beat a top tier team and the Jets lose, and Miami stuffing Buffalo is another great result as well. Brady is looking a lot closer to his old self now too and Welker proved today just how important he is to us.

And two great performances today from Leigh Bodden, the interception and the fumble recovery on the kickoff return were both crucial. Sammy Morris had a very good day too. Hard to pick between them for the best Patriot of the day. I'm liking Fred Taylor more and more each week, the way he gets those tough yards and seems to get that extra one in the trenches. Belichick has it right too using a team of rushers rather than just depending on two guys. We've seen teams already this year suffer through injuries to their no.1 rb. That will never happen with the Patriots, we even have lawfirm inactive on gamedays.

I know its populist, but Romo was appallingly bad tonight. I know Newman fcuked up, and Roy Williams never really got into the game, plus the Broncos defence was superb at times, but Romo showed no vision.

I fear it was the worst I have seen him play since I started following the Cowboys.

    Im off to bed !

And Josh McDaniels dream start to head coaching continues. Well dream start in what counts. I really didn't think he had the locker room after the Cutler and Marshall things went on. They are doing it though, 4-0 as they head to Foxboro next week.

Marshell is one sick receiver regardless of his off the field 'issues'. The guy can make plays and is making Orton a far better looking QB. Denver have a very good D and Orton is a supreme game manager, 0 ints thus far this year. I don't think that is good enough overall but still better than the dreaded worst team pre kickoff tag.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40,171 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

The Steelers are currently making the Chargers look like the worst team in football, up 21 to zip at halftime. Dreadful performance from the Chargers on both sides of the ball, they really need to get rid of Norv Turner. Its just shocking the performances of this team under him. 11-5 is nothing spectacular with the team he had in 2007, and just making .500 in the very last game of '08 is really unacceptable, the guy is a great offensive co-ordinator but he is a failure as a head coach.
The guy has failed miserably in the past, tbh I was shocked when the Chargers hired him.

i know we havent got to the end of the week but how good was Colon last night for the steelers ?

He singlehandedly handed Mendenhall 160+ yards with his work on the line. Best lineman performance Ive seen so far this season

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,066 ✭✭✭Sea Devils

Must admit I was one of those people who underestimated the Broncos. What Mike Nolan has done to that Defense speaks volumes and from 30th in the NFL in scoring to 1st in the NFL through a quarter of the season is some achievement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,879 ✭✭✭D3PO

Whilst I disagree with McDaniels antics over the QB position etc, you cant argue with the results.

4-0 is beyond the Broncos wildest dreams Im sure.

You gotta give some love to Orton, he always had the potential at the bears. His weakness was always his tendancy to throw picks. 4 games gone no picks at all. a 97.7 passer rating.

    Very impressive so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,142 ✭✭✭Karlusss

Yup, note that the Broncos weren't 4-0 when they had their marquee quarterback. Football genius = football genius at the end of the day. He knows how to use what he has, and he's not putting the quarterback in situations where he's going to turn the ball over.

    Jay Cutler - 8 touchdowns, 5 interceptions
    Kyle Orton - 5 touchdowns, 0 interceptions

We'll see how things pan out when the Broncos need to start throwing for it against Brees, Brady or Manning.

What antics did McDaniels get involved in/started?

All the antics were from Cutler and Marshall, and McDaniels handled them the best way a 32yr old 1st year head coach could.

The only thing he did, was entertain the idea of trading for Cassel but Cutler threw a hissy fit and used it as an excuse to get traded out of Denver (which he had already had wanted before the Cassel talk).

As for Marshall, you can hardly put blame on anybody but Marshall. McDaniels handled the situation very well in a very tense, locker room swaying situation.

Anyway the Broncos are decent, 4-0 is flattering them at the moment, but they could easily win their divison, a top 10 team but certainly not elite.

    .

THe Marshall thing was handled spot on i think, as for the Cutler one none of us know for sure what happened but the majority of the blame for me falls on mcdaniels from what you read.

thats just my opinion, none of us know for sure how it went down.
