I was just thinking of this earlier.

    USA (Baseball, Basketball, American Football)
    Canada (Ice Hockey)
    Ireland (Gaelic Football)
Australia (AFL, Cricket and Rugby League)
    New Zealand (Rugby Union)
    Fiji (Rugby Union)
    Papua New Guinea (Rugby League)
    South Africa (Rugby Union)
    Zimbabwe (Cricket)
    India (Cricket)
    Pakistan (Cricket)
    Sri Lanka (Cricket)
    Bangladesh (Cricket)
    Ethiopia (Distance running)
    Kenya (Distance running)

Have I left any out? or am I incorrect with any of the above?

In Ireland gaelic football is the No. 1 sport followed by soccer with hurling third. Soccer only overtook hurling in the last 2-3 years

Cuba probably correct, croatia perhaps, but serbia is surely football?

I think football might be a little bigger than ice hockey in sweden though not certain, probably not in finland though.

    Lithuania - Basketball is another.

Im going to Taiwan soon and its not the no.1 sport there, due to American & Japanese influences its Baseball and Basketball. Although Ireland doesn't recognise it as a country not wanting to piss off China so maybe that doesent count :pac:

There was some research done about a year ago. Cant remember who it was by but it appeared on the road to croker or some show like that and it said that gaelic football was No.1 for the whole island in participation

Good list. Surely though you would think Distance running would appear on that list for participation though? The amount of people who run Marathon's, Half Marathon's, 10 Miles, 10km and 5km road races is very high.

    Cricket
    AFL
    Rugby League
    Rugby Union

League is higher than AFL, seeing as AFL is only properly popular in Victoria.

And yes, Association Fooball is the highest participation sport in Ireland.

AFL is bigger. Its the biggest sport by far in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory and Tasmania (I think, though correct me if I'm wrong on that particular one). League is only bigger in NSW and Queensland.

Isn't AFL the most attended sporting event in Oz ?

His Geography/Maths may not be the best bless him, but he doesn't actually say soccer is the most popular sport in Australia, he says cricket is.

Soccer does'nt seem all that popular in the far east. Although the 2002 world cup kind of helped soccer in japan and south korea.

I hate the thought that when I say "I have a football match tonight" that people think I mean Gaelic Football. So I say soccer and it's now a habit.

AFL is definitely the biggest sport in Western Australia. Very few people give a flying fuck about League over here, hence there being no NRL team.

Only in attendance figures. Soccer has the most participants.

Isn't only Championship matches that draw big crowds too. I know Dublin play lots of matches during the year that are played in Parnell Park and get quite small crowds.

How many soccer clubs are there in Ireland?

    There are 2,500 GAA clubs

Around 10,000 at Parnell Park for Dublin football league games. Rarely less than 8,000 or more than 12,000.

Really? I used to live in Donnycarney and it never seemed to be that much. I stand corrected.

Still doesn't doesn't mean that Gaelic football is the most played sport though.

I thought the thread said "counties" there for a minute in which case the obvious answer would have been Kilkenny.
