Following on from the other thread, what exercises to you dislike ? Why do you still do them ?

For me its pull-ups/chins , purely because I suck at them. Ive made fantastice gains on every other aspect of my gym time except on these. I think my weight going up has restricted progress. Im starting to notice some improvement since starting negatives however.

On the other hand I HATE weighed lunges, only reason I do them is because I read somewhere that they are a good leg exercise.

I seem to particularly suck at overhead squats.

Other exercises that rate highly on my suckometer and just feel "wrong" include:
    - reverse flys
    - good mornings
    - tricep pushdowns

... that list is not complete.

    overhead suqats
    most humbling of all exercises
struggle to knock out 10 reps with just the BB

I actually don't know... probably anything involving biceps. Like I want big arms, but it jst seems like such a waste of time curling.

I love One Arm Rows and SLDL's, because I don't suck at them :) It's as good a reason as any!

BB bench press for a few different reasons. My bench is weak, can't check my form myself while doing it and there's never anyone around I trust to spot me.

I read the thread title as "Whats your least favourite desert ?" :(

    Kinda chalk and cheese really.

In fact chalk and cheese pudding would be my least favourite desert.
    Good question.

Its one day that really fustrates me to the point that I just wanna let go of the bar and leave the gym sometimes.Obviously thats easier said than done when you have 80 something kilos towering over you without a spotter! Its probably why my chest hasnt developed nowhere near as well as other parts of my body. If you ever meet me dont ask me how much I bench, but please do feel free to ask me how much i DL and squat lol!
On the contrary I LOVE leg days-squatting,lunges,leg pressing, extensions, curls whatever!!

Deadlift cause its one that can do damage if ya dont do it right and it just leaves me absoloutly knackered

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,991 ✭✭✭metamorphosis

Tuck jumps. Who ever invented in these deserves to be castrated or kicked in the gooch. It's not very nice having to do these nonstop for 90seconds having 'KNEES HIGHER TO CHEST' been shouted at you!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,031 ✭✭✭Cravez

Barbell Bench for me, im just much stronger Dumbell Benching for some reason.

Either that or.... Reverse barbell lunges. Hate them more than Bulgrian Split Squats

Leg extensions. They're astounding, but they make me want to cry.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,513 ✭✭✭BrianD3

I'm useless at squatting and not great at benching or overhead pressing but I wouldn't say I "dislike" any of them. It's not the fault of the exercise that I suck at it :) There is also a masochistic appeal to doing lifts that you're crap at.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,122 ✭✭✭✭Jimmy Bottlehead

Hate chin and pull ups cos I suck at them :( Used to hate squats but I've grown to love them.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 5,671 ✭✭✭BraziliaNZ

i can't seem to do deadlifts without getting niggling pain in my lower spine afterwards, I'm positive my form is right so I just don't do them anymore.
I hate bicep exercises too, seem so unnatural and pointless. Faves are bench and squats.

Anything involving abs or biceps. I just seem to struggle doing anything with them.

just back from the gym - so just to reiterate i HATE overhead presses!

Dumbbell lunges or any of those unilateral exercises, I cannot do them without wobbling all over the place and looking foolish.

if u have good genetics then abs shouldnt be an exercise to hate.

3 sets of sit ups-first go to 25, then take a break, go to failure take another break keep going until you can only do 5
3 sets of twists-dont know what these are called but it involves working obliques.
3 sets of plank-what i do is, use a chair and perform the plank with my legs against a wall. makes them much harder but you really feel it working

    3-4 times a week.

You're gonna love them soon (In a masochistic sort of way). You will be piling the weight onto that bar in no time at all.

Anything involving biceps.progression is so slow and the benefits seem to be slow coming.

For me I can think of 3 that stand out.

    1. Back extension. I was given this to do recently and hated it straight away. Basically you are lying on this apparatus, bent over, top of your head sort of facing the floor. Hands across your chest and pull yourself back up and lower yourself down. I'm pretty unfit and overweight at the moment and only did a few of them and hated them straight away. Can't stand these gym exercises where you have to be bending and twisting in all sorts of awkward ways.

    2. I don't know the name of this exercise but I'll describe it. You lie flat down on the floor on on your stomach. Then you lift your head and legs up. I think you might hold it for a few seconds then slowly let them down. I was given that exercise a few years ago and I don't think I could even do one of them. It wasn't just a case of bending your knees. Your knees had to come off the ground while keeping your legs straight. A killer.

    3. The stairmaster. I got this exercise on a workout programme and I hated it from day 1. The stairmaster is a killer and I absolutely hated it. Needless to say I didn't stick at it for long.

From my own point of view, while exercise can be a bit of a chore and lots of times you don't feel like doing it, you shouldn't hate a particular aspect. If you have some sort of gym programme and there's some particular exercise you hate, you won't want to do it.

    bicep curls. hate training biceps.

also I used to hate the legs training day, so everything to do with legs. but after injuring my knee two months ago and now not being able to train my legs at all I realize how much I'm loosing/missing all that pain and doms after :( I hope my knee will sort itself out soon and I then know I will never hate training my legs again!

If you are finding the back extension too hard on that aparatus, try it on a swiss ball. Same exercise, but you can vary the angle so you can do more of them, and work the muscle for longer.

Second exercise: Try starting in a hands and knees position, and stretching out your arm and leg (right arm and left leg, then left arm and right leg). Again, you'll work the muscles without killing yourself.

Both are excellent exercises, by the way, really function and will keep your back working and painfree for years to come.
