just spotted it myself, was planning on switching to o2 in a couple of weeks when my contract ends , and getting the iPhone, not sure what i'll do now, dont want to get stuck in another 12 month contract with vodafone if they aren't able to beat o2 tariffs. but then if they are , prob would be hurt hanging on for another bit.

To be launched 'early 2010' according to Kelly from Vodafone on their website. Can't imagine the plans will be fantastically better but may suit ppl who make a lot of calls to voda numbers.

Excellent, im sick to death of O2, being trying to upgrade now for about 2 months. Just because i cant make it to an O2 shop at the drop of a hat i can't get one.

Whats the betting that O2's "technical limits" of not being able to upgrade online will be very quickly solved over the next few days.

Looking forward to this when it happens. Competition can only benefit the consumer. I'm also looking forward to getting my 3G unlocked by O2 once the "exclusivity" argument cannot be used anymore !

Ditto. Its been bugging me for ages when they quote this crap. Can't wait to see what happens with this now.

great news for the consumer anyway hopefully vodafones inclusion in the market will drive the price down. it says early 2010 but would they not want to hit the christmas market to increase sales. maybe they just saying 2010 to stop people asking about launch dates

"Early 2010" is getting close to the typical next gen iPhone release date.

Don't think I'd wait 4/5 months to get a 3GS from Vodafone when another 4/5 months will likely see a radically different iPhone again.

I really hope this is the case, because I moved to o2 just to get the iPhone here (didn't trust eBay, and wasn't going to be near italy or Belgium) ...

Hopefully it will be possible to move back at some stage soon without having to put up with this guff from o2 about "we're not going to unlock it". Either that or o2 get more competitive with their pricing or Data Add-ons :)

3Gs wasn't "radically different" from the 3G, TBH.

Also, I thought they only change it once a year? Delighted that Vodafone have got the iPhone. Reception for o2 is rubbish in my house and most of my calls would be to Vodafone numbers. I would be happy with a €35 tariff.

I was exactly the same when buying an Iphone. I don't really plan on moving from O2, but I want my Iphone unlocked in case I decide to upgrade. BTW I just opened a thread on this on the O2 forum. Just waiting for some sort of response now , to see where we stand.

Was hoping that Meteor would get it (but doubted they would)

Had my eye on moving to bill pay with them, for 45pm it seems like you could get 200mins, 200texts, free meteor to meteor calls and texts and unlimited data. (maybe you can't get that, but it certainly seemed that way to me).

Come on meteor, get that damned finger out.

im the same with meteor. there new price plans mid range include up to 500 txts and a 1G data allowance so for the iphone that would be perfect. i wonder will vodafone offer the iphone 3gs prepay at a lower price than the 520 of O2. id rather get it there and have a fallback of a guarantee and return than no fallback from a 2nd hand one. I doubt meteor will get it anytime soon but i would say they will see a load of business leaving them to return to vodafone for the iphone

About time - I had a first gen. and now a 3G both unlocked to work on Vodafone. Didn't bother with the 3GS but this is promising as next year's edition would probably launch on both O2 and Vodafone at the same time.

The 3GS has always struck me a stop-gap update but I'm willing to bet the next model could be a radical update. The aquisition of PA Semi will probably bear fruit by that stage and I think that there is more pressure now on Apple to bring in the likes of OLED screens etc.

This is great news for the Irish consumer.

Wonder if they'll enable edge on the vodafone network now in preparation...

I just called Vodafone. After selecting menu option the call was picked up in 8 seconds. Nice!

Spoke to a very friendly girl who told me that the iPhone is available spring 2010. Questioned her on price plans and tethering, Visual voicemail, services etc. Was told price plans not available yet (prob waiting to see O2's reaction) and that although she could not confirm everything yet, it is planned to provide full iPhone features at launch.

Vodafone = provide full features on launch?
O2 = Make a shambles of it and wait until we get some competition?

Don't give up hope yet ... Orange only announced yesterday in the UK that they were picking up the iPhone, and today Vodafone. It could be a case of all bets are off now, with exclusivity and any shenanigans like that.
(hopefully with the ability - if desired and fully paid up - to unlock the phone from o2)

Never suggested it was. And the fact that it wasn't, suggests that the next upgrade is likely to be radical.

Looking forward to see what tariffs they have, hopefully this will start some serious competition between the two companies and make the iPhone more affordable for everyone.
Being a student I can't afford the €50 a month for the iPhone plan, knock a tenner or twenty off it and will snap up one of these babies in a second

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 865 ✭✭✭Purple Gorilla

Don't expect much change in price or tariffs I'd say..they've both been accused of collusion before, what makes you think that the iPhone will be any different?

No apple product updates are ever radical. None that I can think of anyway. Certainly not the iPod range.

iMac family - another new chassis coming very soon, probably aesthetically the biggest changes. Intel transition which was huge (probably the closest analogy for ARM to PA Semi transition which is bound to occur). The Pro line tends to stay pretty much the same (externally) although the new unibody macbook are a completely new design. SnapDragon, Tegra OLED etc. the pace of mobile technology coupled with real competition will force Apple to advance.

can you not use edge already on vodafone to surf the net? what happens when you've no 3G?

GPRS. Which is a slow. Very slow.

why won't the let you use edge? Do vodafone modems not use edge when there's no 3G?

From the Silicon Republic and other news sites today - "Vodafone Ireland has just announced that it has won a deal to sell the Apple iPhone."

As an owner of present and past Apple products I'm a dedicated fan of their stuff but it amuses me how this news is viewed. Obviously it's the way Vodafone and o2 etc view it, but shouldn't it read -

'Apple has announced it has won a deal for Vodafone to sell the iPhone for it'?

Hopefully all the people o2 have recently pissed off change over to vodafone asap, they might get the message and sort out their mess of a service

i know once my contract is up with o2, unless they offer better terms like a lot more free texts a month, the uk get 500 free whilst we only get 100, they get 300 freee mins we got 175, and they get unlimited data, we got 1 gig.

now if they sort that mess out, i might be tempted to stay , otherwise, im coming back to vodafone.

Agreed, I'm currently letting my 3G O2 contract run out. I was always suspicious about why the offered early upgrade to 3G customers inly 12 months in their 18 month contracts. It went against all their other behaviour to their customers. Clearly it was designed to get people locked in for another 18 months before this news broke.

However I doubt I'll just jump to Voda when contract is up as it looks like it will be shortly before the 3G Tablet and possibly the 4G iphone come out.

The best thing that can happen is it will force O2 to rethink some of their crappy attitudes to their existing customers, feature support and absolutely money grabbing data roaming charges. However even if it does I'm sure many will move having gotten tired of being shafted for so long.

mmm.... yeah.... see what you mean - it/they/them - ah..whatever!:o

still think Apple should be grateful having 'won' the position to now sell more iPhones to all the devoted Vodafone non switching customers!... :)

Got me an Italian IPhone some time ago because point blank refused to go to O2. It was expensive, but it works great and now Voda can help as they support the iPhone..yeah.....

Never liked O2and always liked Vodafone.

Am glad now as I am also due an upgrade with Voda and just might hold of and buy me a new iPhone when it comes out.

    hehehehehehe :D

I smell a revamp of vodafones tarrifs coming. right now they're not at the races at all, and are taking a pounding from meteors new plans, along with o2 on the clear 350 or higher. and with no discounts on upgrades why stay with them? so essentially theres no incentive as a new or existing customer to go with them. we could see something more in line with 02/meteor around the time of the iphone launch. they would be very short sighted not to.

Vodafone badly needs quality phones at this stage. They used to be the leaders in introducing high end handsets but it's amazing to see how poor their offerings have been recently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 602 ✭✭✭philiporeilly

I called vodafone yesterday and was told it would be Spring 2010. According to the Media, vodafone got a deal for both UK & Ireland but Orange in the UK are allowed a head start before christmas.

no girl in any store can claim that at this early stage. Its spring 2010

I bought an iPhone from O2 about 2 weeks ago, I dare say I might have held off had I seen this. Although having said that, I wonder will they be locked on Vodafone? At the moment anyway my iPhone is unlocked and working perfectly with Vodafone, unfortunately I can't update the software as I'll lose the unlock.

I remember I bought a Vodafone UK phone when I was up home in the north a couple of years ago and it wouldn't work with my Irish Vodafone sim. I phoned them up and they said it would cost £25 sterling to unlock. I told them I didn't want to use it on another network, I just wanted to use it with my Vodafone Ireland sim (which was the truth). Sure enough they decided to give me the unlock code for free. I doubt it would be as easy with the iPhone though...

I also was talking to a manager who I know in a Vodafone shop and she said they would be trying to get it out before Christmas.

I personally think they will be in 2nd week of Jan 2010 .

O2 will do everything in their power to hold onto the Christmas market and New Year Sales, i would say Apple will bow out of loyalty .

    My 2 pence worth.

I'm almost wishing I'd held off and not bought one from O2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,754 ✭✭✭Bluefoam

Reading this thread has made me realise that we will never get value in this country as long as the iphone contract is negotiated as an additional bonus to the networks in the uk, who see us as an obscure cash cow. O2 have had no intention of upgrading the network, as this would mean investing in Ireland rather than pulling money out at a rate of knotts.

On a side note, I can't see meteor investing in apple centric systems, so it is doubtful they will get the iphone. Shame, because their pricing is light years ahead of O2 and Vodafone, and I find their customer care exellent.
