Mad to think this has been out in the US for four months though.

DVD / Blu-ray should be released in the US shortly.

Looking forward to seeing it.. I personally thought Wall-E and Ratatouille were the best things Pixar have done since Toy Story.

You are pretty much guaranteed quality with Pixar.

Easily my favourite film of the year so far.

Pixars staggered release of their movies is quite odd. Does anyone know the reasoning behind it? I've managed to see their last 3 movies months before they got their UK/Irish release.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,788 ✭✭✭✭krudler

I dont get the staggered releases either, my flatmate had Ratatouille on R1 dvd before or around the cinema release here, and Up is due out on R1 soon so there'll be dvd rips floating around the internet once it hits cinemas, now Pixar movies I'll always go to the cinema to see as I dont do pirate copies, quality over seeing things for free imo

    Thought it was well done myself, took its time being released over there! A bit of a rough start to it alright. ;_;

Brilliant movie. Loved it when I saw it back in June in New York. Completely ridiculous that it's only being released next week.

As I said in the animation thread last week, it's by far the best film I've seeen this year, and with ten best picture nominees next year, it thoroughly deserves to be the second animated film in history to be nominated for best picture.

Any thoughts on whether it's worth seeing the 3D version over the vanilla 2D one?

On second look, on Cineworld's site, it's only showing times for the 3D version, so maybe we don't need to think about it? :)

I'm a massive fan of Pixar and have loved almost everything theyve done...but I just didnt like this.
the talking dogs and that creature didnt work for me. I was very conscious I was watching a childrens movie, something that doesnt usually happen with Pixars films
    .

Best film of the year so far and maybe Pixar's best

Really liked it as well. Somewhat bold move by Pixar to make the hero a senior citizen, and it brought a nice dimension to the story that I don't think I've seen in many blockbuster animated movies as it let them deal with more varied issues as a result.

    AMAZING movie, so moving!!

I didnt really like the ending - thought it was a bit violent for kids.

You'll definatly be shedding a tear or having heart strings pulled.

My first 3D movie - brilliant!

Overall a v.good movie. I brought my 4yr old to see it today, and one or two scenes are fairly emotive. Mortality and loneliness are portrayed v.well. My own little one asked a couple of awkward questions due to this but it wasn't overly heavy and I fielded the questions 'after a pause' to think about answers.

Visually it is stunning as usual for a 3D or even a normal cinematic experience. The story is good enough to be appreciated and enjoyed just as much without the 3D experience.

The story and the journey of the main characters is done v.well and I felt for the characters. It did make me feel a bit choked up at times.

The comedy was mostly visual with some nice suttle stuff thrown in for the adults. The dogs were particularly well done with the dog translator collars and the 'cone of shame'. That crazy bird was done v.well as well.

I thought the ending was v.sweet with a hint of sadness thrown in at the same time. I was vaguely satisfied with the whole experience but it is definately a PG movie where parents should consider that their child might be asking or thinking quietly about more awkward questions about mortality.

Overall though a good to great film. Possibly one of the only ones I have been to in recent years where the audience were in danger of actually applauding altogether. Quite a few did.

Ps if your thinking of going to see this as a parent tomorrow (Sun) book in advance it sold out early today and the ques were massive (even though I booked online early and showed up 1/2 hour early I was behind about a 100 folks with another 100+ behind me. Best of luck.

Great movie. I brought my two daughters to see it so realistically there were three kids watching in amazement. Already decided to go again with the OH this time.

I was a bit disappointed with this. The only part that saved it from being an average film were
the talking dogs who were freakin hilarious! when I get a dog, i'm gonna call him Dug.
Otherwise, i didn't think there was much to distinguish it. It was my first time seeing a film in 3D & i don't think it's a film that really blows you away in this regard, i don't think you'd miss much by seeing it in 2D.

Very good film and quite emotional too (a lot of it will go over younger kids heads though).

Pixar are without a doubt the most consistently good film makers in the world.

Bring on Disney Pixars *Insert Marvel franchise here

Absolutly loved the film. I was in tears twice during it, the opening scene is one of the most moving scenes I have ever seen and it's sheer brilliance makes the rest of the film pale in comaprision.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,737 ✭✭✭pinksoir

Really enjoyed it. But I have to say, Ratatouille was a superior film, still my favourite Pixar movie.

Pixar films do tug on the aul heart-strings, but they all have good positive messages. Reminds me of Dr. Suess books, particularly "Oh, The Places you'll Go!"

Loved this movie. Had a big lump in my throat at the start...really moving stuff.

Pixar, they are up there with Studio Ghilbi for story telling and making you feel like a kid.

I went to see this with my girlfriend on Saturday. Easily my favourite movie of the year by a country mile. I was a bit hesitant when i saw the trailer and the fact that i heard 3D is a bit gimmiky. The 3D was really incredible it really brings you into the movie and i think adds greatly to the film overall. Ill admit to welling up twice during this film, the opening sequence is just breathtakingly beautiful.

I dont know how Pixar do it. Im going to go see it again next weekend and i NEVER go see movies twice in the cinema :D

Definitely recommended theres more here for the kids than there was in Wall-E

I loved it. The start was amazing. I challenge anyone to be unmoved by the start. For some reason I'm always underwhelmed by Pixar trailers but overwhelmed by their films. Still think Wall-e or Cars are my favourites (I think Cars is really under appreciated).

Just a question for the people who brought their kids: What did the kids make of it. I got the impression while watching it that, like cars, it might be a bit low key for kids (Although Doug was hilarious)

I loved the movie - shed a tear or two at the start, and again at the end.
Brought my 4 year old godson - he seemed to like it, when I asked him what his favourite part was he said the talking dog - he was glued to it from start to finish. At ice age 3 he started to wander along the aisle - for this didn't move once.

Remember it is a film for children.
And a film for teenagers. And those in their twenties, thirties, fourties, fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties, and beyond. That's the beauty of a Pixar movie.

Fantastic film. Just back from the cinema. My first 3D film. :D Wasn't blown away by the 3D to be honest. I don't think you'd miss much watching normal 2D!! Film was amazing. Pixarz best IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

Just back from it myself. Do yourself a favour and don't bother with the 3D, there is maybe two 1 second long parts of the film where it is needed, the rest of the time it just makes everything slightly darker.

Overall it really didn't do much for me. I'd mirror Tuskys post on the first page in that I was aware throughout I was watching a kiddie movie. The progression felt like it was plodding for the most part, reminiscent of Horton Hears a Who actually, and the jokes where sparse and predictable. The animal gags I felt where handled much better and with a greater variety in Bolt.

Maybe I'm just not in the niche that appreciates this kind of film. I've never owned a dog, or have any kids of my own and I'm not elderly.

On the ball, was just coming to say that. Don't know why people consider these childrens movies. Pixar are masters at mutli layering their movies so that thay can be enjoyed by all ages. Only Miyazaki comes close. Toy story 3 will bring in more revenue from the over 20's then it will from under 20's.

BTW screener is on tinternet for past few weeks and dvdrips and 720p will be on from late Oct / early Nov

Oh how I loved this film. You know everytime I go to see a Pixar film I expect something wonderful, but am always rewarded with something so much more than that (except Cars). The opening is possibly the most emotional I've ever felt during a film (hyperbole alert perhaps, but seriously moving) and from the moment
Carl entered that house I could already see where it was going, but damn if that masterpiece of a montage doesn't pack a punch
. Pixar managed to condense a lifetime of experiences, joy and sadness, into a five minute collection of images. Isn't that what cinema is about?

The rest of the film is just a fantastic flight of fancy. The cinematography is spectacular (the glorious balloons against grey buildings and blue skies,
Carl walking his house at dusk
). The characters are full of life, animated with a great eye for detail (
the jerkiness of Kevin, the almost scarily animated dogs
). And it is probably the funniest film I've seen in a good while (
the GPS gag was inspired, the talking dogs genuinely funny, and just a constant stream of sight gags and quirky humour
). But most of all, like pretty much every Pixar film, it is at its heart a buddy movie, this time with two of the most instantly likable individuals in any Pixar movie, characters you truly care for. Plus you've got to love the retro vibe Pixar are going for at the moment - 60s musicals in WALL-E, 30s dogfights and newsreels here!

I really can't see how people can dismiss this as a merely simplistic kids movie. No film this year has made me feel so emotionally involved. Even the main characters represent multiple generations fairly and accurately (Carl must be one of the most rounded and complex elderly characters represented in film - okay, maybe not Saraband complex, but for a mainstream Disney animation the characterisation is remarkable). This is a remarkably grown up, mature piece of work. I'm not going to say Pixar have outdone themselves, as that is pretty much a cliche at this point, but Up once again cements the studios status as the most consistent, brilliant animation studio of contemporary times. Hell, even Ghibli have had more duds.

Saw this a few days ago and thought it was great.

Did think the 3D effect was mostly useless (Though I had forgotten my glasses, So I presume the effect is better when you can see properly!) and I thought it made the whole film way too dark and horribly lacking in contrast.

yup i'd agree with that, spent a lot of the movie with the 3d glasses off.

on the movie itself, i certainly enjoyed it, but I think the "it's pixar's best" stuff is a bit OTT. after the opening to the movie i was a bit disappointed with where it went (talking dogs, seriously?) and the villain was poor, I thought.

i really welled up during the
    montage at the start
.. what a beautiful few moments..

Have to agree with this, it's the biggest (and possibly the only) flaw of the movie in my opinion.

Up is fantastic. I loved everything about it.

3D was used very tastefully. The background was brilliantly enhanced and there were some really stunning moments particularly the scenes where the house floated through the clouds. Moments where i just sat there thinking wow.

I loved all the characters and the zany plot goes perfectly with the theme of the film: Live life, dont let it float by.

Up succeeds as a visually awesome film and one which you can really connect to. Pixar do the little things just as well as they do the big things.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,434 ✭✭✭Lamper.sffc

Unfortunately I was a little disappointed. While the start was great, the rest of the movie just plodded along. Never really hilarious and never really moving, just ok. I really wanted to enjoy another Pixar movie but this unfortunately fell short IMO. Not a patch on Wall E and Ratatouille.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,019 ✭✭✭SexyD4Lady

All round brilliant family film. Very sentimental- shed many a tear behind my 3D specs! Although I did agree the villain was a bit of a poor show. Otherwise, really can't fault it. I thought Russell was very sweet. "Now that she is gone, there is more chocolate for you" :(

Loved this movie. Had to resist watching it online for a few months and it was well worth it! Pixar can do no wrong atm. Bring on Toy Story 3 although it will have a hard time living up to the second one which, along with the Incredibles is Pixars best imo(although I change my mind about that fairly often :D).

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,442 ✭✭✭Firetrap

I liked it though the initial transition from realism to the stuff with the talking dogs was jarring at first. It was quite a sad film I thought and it could have been very depressing if it wasn't for the laughs along the way.

    WHAT WHAT WHATWHATWHAT?!?!?!
Toy Story is a far superior movie to its sequel, no matter how good that was.

I disagree, Toy Story 2 is one of the few sequels that improves upon the original, which was brilliant also don't get me wrong!
