    From the RTE website:

On tonight's Late Late Show Ryan Tubridy will be talking to Linda and Tony Sutherland about the recent tragic death of their son Darren.

They will be joined in the studio audience by friends of the boxer who will pay tribute to the Irish Olympic medal winner.

Also on the show, three of Ireland's leading actresses (Victoria Smurfit, Amy Huberman and Alison Doody) will talk to Ryan about the new series of 'The Clinic'.

the sutherlands interview will be interesting. seems they are kinda blaming maloney and the trainer ? i thought maloney had a very good relationship with darren but no one knows. hate that bloody new set on the late late. HATE HATE HATE it.

No offence to the family but that sounds like dreadful 'hello' style television to me. It's the last LL before Lisbon II referendum & I would prefer a shift in gear towards politically interesting content. The LL is a great format for this and in the past has not been shy of contentious issues of national importance.

I wonder where the decision came from. I agree with you that it's very disappointed. A full-show panel discussion of this would be powerfully influential. It could restore the Late Late Show to its place as something that people look to for guidance in important social matters.

Maybe it's the influence they're shying away from. So few people have made up their minds about Lisbon that a strong showing either way on the Late Late could swing the referendum.

It would need to be moderated brilliantly. There's thin ice everywhere. Do you think someone has decided that Tubridy isn't up to it? Or, not to be cruel, that it came a little early for him?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 785 ✭✭✭Shane10

or its been done a bit. prime time covered it last night in fairness. any of the debates ive seen have been a waste of time with one side just rubbishing the other sides claims. its so complex an issue, no one really knows that much about it. doubt tubridy would be up on it as much as say pat would. not really ryan's thing.

It's hard to say why this decision was made. I think the numbers of undecided swing-voters is exactly the reason why it would have been required. I would guess the rte board are wary of the risks of putting a foot wrong (whereas with current affairs programmes under more established leadership this is less of a risk).

I doubt Turbidy personally would be the reason for shying away from potentially THE national political debate programme on this referendum. It would have set the shows credentials.

I think it's a wasted opportunity & instead we have the above lineup.

It should be his thing, though. I thought when he led withthe Cowen interview that he was signalling an intention to deal with serious political issues. It must surely have come up in the job interview too.

The Late Late Show is RTE's flagship show, and it's always aimed to be the forum for important national debates. I take your point about the low quality of the arguments so far, but that should inspire them to tackle it and do it well.

Shying away from it is either cowardice, terrible judgement, or a lack of trust in the host.

    Rubbish line up again.

I think the parents are better off staying quiet, it's only been 2 weeks since their son's death. A lot of what they might say will be based on anger. I think I would find the interview uncomfortable to watch.

Yeah fair point. I'm surprised Lisbon is not being featured but maybe RTE are just afraid of the subject. Listened to some of the debate on the Last Word last night and Matt Cooper seemed to have his work cut out trying to keep it balanced. Would Turbridy be up for it? Big risk for them if he messed up.

As for the family of Darren Sutherland, I see what you're saying about the Hello style interviews but you'd have to give the benefit of the doubt on this one. Maybe they just want to highlight prevalence of suicide in Ireland.
Didn't know that they were "blaming maloney and the trainer" but they want to be careful saying anything on national TV.

    Other guests are meh.

    :p
We have more successful actresses than them! Elaine Cassidy, Saoirse Ronan, Eva Birthistle ...

I think its way too soon after darrens death to have his parents on the show. very uncomfortable for Ryan, as was the Jermaine Jackson interview.
I think Lisbon should at least be touched on and after the lambasting Ryan gave cowen in his 1st Late Late show, I think he would be able for it. Pat wouldnt have the Balls to shut up a government minister if they were running over time, like!
I m glad they got rid of pat, but poor Ryan has a long road ahead of him if he wants to return the show to its former glory!

Not to stray too far off the point, but there was a great Gift Grub about the wedding yesterday. It's up on iTunes.

I think they should have a satellite link to his honeymoon island. It might also work as the pilot for a Larry David-style reality-based Dunphy sitcom.

    Amy Huberman????

i seem to remember he on 'Tubridy Tonight' not so long ago; literally about 6 months ago in fact.

she can't possibly have that interesting a life.

Lisbon 2 discussion is way beyond Tubridy's scope imo.

Doody has made about 3 movies in the past decade, thats not exactly a "leading" actresses resume, does the late late just bring people on that happen to be in the RTE building on Fridays or something?

Will be time to put the kettle on when they are on.

Too true, I predict a pretty pretay dull 15 mins of TV there now.

It does seem very close to poor Darren's death for his parents to be on the show alright, I hope Tubridy handles them properly. Some hope of that I hear ye echo.

Anyone know who else is on? Music or comic wise? I hope there's no talk of Lisbon, we have had it during the week and I'm sure Pat will be doing his thing about it on Frontline Monday. Folk should really know by now what way they are going to vote I think.

Usual Friday night, bottle of red, the LLS and plenty of visits to this thread to voice my dismay at the host.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 32,865 ✭✭✭✭MagicMarker

No offense to Darren's family, but I really couldn't give a fúck about him and have no interest seeing an interview with his family.

As for the other 3, never even heard of them.

It's a step down from Dawkins that's for sure. I agree with the others, the week before Lisbon and it's completely ignored, wasted opportunity.

I have to agree with you and Morlar on this. I am slightly dreading the item. Obviously we all feel sorry for the parents, but they don't sound in any condition to be appearing in public. If they start throwing around blame for their son's death, it will be horribly uncomfortable and horribly unfair to anyone they name.

I think RT could come out of this looking very bad. Fingers crossed he shows some sensitivity and control.

That sounds mighty fine. A slight difference of alcohol here, and I think I like the host more. But I read this thread last week the day after, and even then it was the best thing about the show. I'm still wondering why trad musicians smile at each other all the time. What do they know that we don't?

you can join in tonight so Meeja, save yourself the reading time saturday. I don't bash Tubs for the sake of it BTW, I genuinely think he aint up to this job, its nothing personal, honest. As for the trad mob, I never thought of that til you said it, and now I wish you hadn't.

Seriously, I'm staying in for this thread. This is the full 3D Late Late experience. It doesn't sound like there will be many laughs in it this week, to be fair, but it's a great way to watch television.

As for liking the Tubster, I posted a huge piece of praise last week. I think I called him the future of planet earth, or rock and roll, or something. But my faith was shaken by the show, and I have a vague feeling of impending disaster tonight. We may be three hours away from agreeing with each other.

(And the trad joke was JonathanAnon's, by the way. It cracked me up.)

He's just announced that the guests will include the Sutherlands, the Clinic coven, and an Emmy Award winner from Tubbercurry. Is that the director, Dearbhla Walsh? I thought Brendan Gleeson, our other Emmy, was from Dublin.

Yeah she directed the Churchill thing that Gleeson got his gong for. She started off directing Ros na Run I believe. From little acorns great oak trees grow!! Seems like we'll have to make our own entertainment here. I will be watching the Sutherlands with one eye closed. Unfortunate folk who perhaps are being used as pawns in a ratings chase. Reality TV gone overboard.

Surprising that they're leading with this item. It does make it feel a little less exploitative, but are we realy goign to cut from a bereaved father to Tony Christie?

RTE approach him or did he approach RTE? Either way I don't think RTE should have gone with it....

Very powerful and very important that suicide isn't swept under the carpet like it always is.

Darren's father is so strong and it's heart-breaking.

Highlights the tragic event that is suicide and hopefully might reduce its high occurrence

Considering the interview went ahead Tubs is doing fine with it. BUT in my opinion it is not appropriate timing for this kind of interview. The poor guy is barely cold in his grave.

The fact that it is a probing, enquiring interview and not even a remembrance/tribute interview disturbs me.

No - it's good that people want to know something about this young man.
Better this than his contribution not remembered.

I agree with you in principle, but couldn't they have waited? The poor man has hardly assimilated the news. Why wouldn't it have been an important item six months from now, when it wouldn't look like prodding a fresh wound for public entertainment?
