    metal detectors

Diving school, Coastline and kite flying were the last 3 iirc, Think diving school was the big money one, followed by kite flying then coastline

No harm. :) I would rather play an honest quiz with a nice presenter. :)

    Something Red:

    Traffic Light
    Strawberry
    Tomato Juice
    London Bus
    Tamato Ketchup
    Raspberry
    Ruby
    Radish
    Fire Extinguisher
    Santa Claus Costume
    Fez

    Top money answers:
    Magnum's Car
    Noddy's Shirt

I like how they have achievable answers and all but really, I'm pretty sure if you gave the entire earth's population the question 'think of something red' and told them to make it as obscure as possible no one would come up with those 2

I remember that guy from the bad old days of these quizzes. Got a bit of a sinking feeling when he turned up on Brainbox. Don't know why really but he always came across as a bit of a looper and it doesn't look like he's changed very much.
Maybe he's just filling in for one of the girls! :)

Jesus, the money in these shows must be unreal. They're doing about 10 grands worth of calls an hour. lol @ chairplane. Where do they get these stupid bastards from?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,096 ✭✭✭✭the groutch

    famous irish people tonight

so far: ronan keating, colin farrell & liam neeson (a brit)

I'd guess: oscar wilde, terry wogan, bono

How come Brain Box isn't on tonight?

Instead UTV have shown some inconsequential boxing match and are now showing this film 'My Little Eye'...

The Irish Mail on Sunday's TV Guide says that Brainbox is on every night until Friday/Saturday morning.

I presume it's proved profitable and is here to stay for the time being?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Go Harvey Go

    Well it's on tonight.

Wonder if this is to make up for last night, or have UTV decided to move the Saturday/Sunday episode to Sunday/Monday at rather short notice?

Or, indeed, could it be a sign that Brain Box is about to go 7 days a week?

hi all can anyone tell me why brainbox was not on last night? they do not responce to there e-mails or answer there customers line,i won the other night with chris and a guy took my phone number the next thing he said to me do not hang up the phone as he was putting me through to a answering machine to give all my details and the next thing the line went dead i was on there for 6mins and no joy.so i rang the customer line and in to answering machine left all my details on it. and e-mailed them 3 or 4 times and still no joy from them. last week my sister heard a lady on joe duffs show regards the quiz shows on tv saying there were a scam.but she does not know with show she was talking about.so fingers crossed i get my cheque in the post.because the calls are very costly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 475 ✭✭jsemple

what time did you ring the customer service line? I think its only available at normal times, like 10am-4pm or something.

These are the contact details off the site but you may already be familiar with them:
How do I contact the Customer Care team?
Customer Services for NI customers: 0845 120 1839
Customer Services for ROI customers: 0818 286 291.

The team is available from 11am to 5pm, Monday to Friday or alternatively you can email them at customerservices@brainboxquiz.tv

It can take 28 days for your cheque to come and from what I understand with these shows they usually take the full 28 days. For what its worth though I don't think brainbox is a scam but if I was in your position I would definitely confirm they have my details.

that was about playtv and their trickery (moments, obscure answers, hour or more without taking a call, etc), brainbox are about as fair and transparent as one of these shows can be, last week I saw them have about 25 winners in one night, all with very realistic answers

Again no Brain Box tonight, even though it was listed in the Irish Times TV guide...

Brainbox gives away so much money...tonights quiz is different and more interesting. Make words from entertainment!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,038 ✭✭✭Go Harvey Go

Sorry to bump up this thread but I've been wondering... it is conceivable that Brain Box could be shown the other side of the Irish Sea?

After all, ITV are still struggling for cash so this show, having not run into any serious trouble yet, could be considered financially viable and thus help them. And it is made at Teddington Studios in west London, and run by the same people behind Five's now erstwhile Quiz Call, so it wouldn't necessarily be venturing into uncharted territory.

It would, admittedly, make a mockery of Michael Grade's move two years ago to ditch late night phone-in quizzes on ITV, but then they've sort of made a mockery of his other big decision by making News At Ten just like an ordinary ITV News bulletin.

I think with the demise of Play TV this brainbox thing is in need of some scrutiny.

Looking at it now it is essentially a game of chance posing as a general knowledge game

it is down to chance whether or not you get through to the studio
it is down to chance whether the answer you give, be it valid or not, is one of the preselected ones on the board.

will this show be covered under the new Communications bill?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Yes. It will be as they have a 1516 number for callers from the republic.

Ostrich will have to get a licence to offer the service down here. What may happen is that they won't bother and the 1516 number will dissapear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

One of the top answers in this game is TITANIC. seen this game before.

In that case will Brain Box be restricted to Northern Ireland only?

    Yes.

I don't know much about that communications bill but I would say it wouldn't be out of the question if they stopped ROI entries if it's too intrusive as it seems it's mostly people from the north who call in and win

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

With the demise of Play TV they may pick up more viewers and callers.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,096 ✭✭✭✭the groutch

the regulations for this type of show are even more stringesnt in the UK, so don't see why they would stop taking irish calls as they are fully compliant in how they conduct the show

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 475 ✭✭jsemple

I'm still unsure how I feel about brainbox. As these kinds of these shows go they are definitely one of the best there has been in terms of transparency, honesty and fairness of games but at the same time there are many times they have a game such as 'a film with a colour in the title' with 8 or 10 preselected answers but there must be thousands of possible answers so it really is marginally better than a guessing game under the guise of a game of skill. Oh well, I do think it is at least apparent to people entering what they are up against.

And Carmel hasn't been on for quite a while now...

Mmmm. If I wasn't so tired I'd stay up and post. Kind of need my fix of some sort of gameshow since the demise of the legendary PlayTV.

    *sniff*

    Still miss that show.

Without her and Danielle, the show would be nothing.

I'm certainly not gone on any of the men...

both Carmel and to a lesser extent Danielle have been spotted on Price-drop TV recently

They've actually been on it since before Brain Box began, would you believe.

Here's the evidence, courtesy of YouTube:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_Cs_MEcaUY

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir3su-4IgdY

Carmel even appeared on Price-Drop TV's sister channel, Bid TV, as early as summer 2007 - Make Your Play and Glitterball were still going on ITV at this time.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XonevrrEW04

Incidentally, the legendary Greg Scott is also a Price-Drop TV regular - if it ever happened that he turned up on Brain Box, I'd say he'd be just as great on it as he was on Quizmania. He'd certainly be way better than any of the current male presenters.
