    Leinster reveal squad for Edinburgh
    Tuesday, 22 September 2009 13:26
The Leinster squad to face Edinburgh in Saturday's Magners League clash in Murrayfield has been named.

Luke Fitzgerald, Jamie Heaslip and Rob Kearney are named in the panel for the first time this season and they are joined by Girvan Dempsey who missed last weekend's 18-11 victory over the Ospreys.

Jonathan Sexton, who scored 15 points in the Liberty Stadium, is also included alongside the likes of Leo Cullen, Nathan Hines, Shane Jennings and 19-year-old Leinster Academy and Ireland Under-20 back-row forward Dominic Ryan.

Leinster squad to face Edinburgh at Murrayfield in the Magners League on Saturday 26 September:

Forwards: Leo Cullen, John Fogarty, Cian Healy, Jamie Heaslip, Nathan Hines, Bernard Jackman, Shane Jennings, Ronan McCormack, Kevin McLaughlin, Sean O'Brien, Mike Ross, Dominic Ryan, Devin Toner, Stan Wright

Backs: Shaun Berne, Gordon D'Arcy, Girvan Dempsey, Luke Fitzgerald, Shane Horgan, Chris Keane, Rob Kearney, Simon Keogh, Fergus McFadden, Isa Nacewa, Eoin Reddan, Jonathan Sexton

So David K gets dropped for Rob K? Missed the opening games, how did Kearney junior get on?
Any win in Edinburgh will be gratefully accepted

Meh never noticed anything from him never really got involved in the two matches he was apart, was pretty much like seeing his brother on the wing you just never notice him.

So, the BOD gets an extra week off. Will be intersting to see how they'll line up. A lot of places up for grabs. Fogarty has the lineout working ok, Nacewa has playd well at full-back and there's been a fir bit of chopping and changing in the tight 5. The back row will be especially interesting. O'Brien at 6? Or McLaughlin? I'd like to see us start Fitz at 13 for this one to get all our best strike runners on the pitch. Who knows, perhaps we'll even try out a bit of attacking rugby; stranger things have happened.

where is O Driscoll? Surely the game against Munster would be the wrong time to introduce him or is he injured?

According to the newspapers, he is over viewing his new pad in Dubai:)

Seriously, didn't he have some laser eye treatment which may be delaying his comeback?

Rugby Forum award for most random racist rant of the year? :pac:

    team I'd like to see:

    1. Healy
    2. Fogarty
    3. Ross (I prefer Wright at the moment, but Ross deserves a chance to show what he can bring)
    4. Toner
    5. Cullen
    6. O'Brien
    7. Jennings
    8. Heaslip
    9. Reddan
    10. Sexton
    11. Fitzgerald
    12. D'arcy
    13. McFadden
    14. Nacewa
    15. Kearney

From Planet Rugby - Irish Times
    Dubai done good

BRIAN O’Driscoll, who will be in contention for a place in Leinster’s plans next weekend for the first time this season, paid a flying visit to take possession of his home on Palm Jumeirah in Dubai.

Speaking of the development, O’Driscoll said: “It’s spectacular; having visited two years ago when it was still under construction you can’t get a real feeling from plans, but I think the finish is incredible, and am looking forward to spending time here.”

    6. McLaughlin
    7. Jennings
    8. Heaslip

    or

    6. Sean O'Brien
    7. Jennings
    8. Heaslip

what do ya want, what do ya expect?

For me SOB is the better long term prospect but it's going to be very harsh on whoever gets dropped, both have done well. I'd have no problem with McLaughlin starting a few more games this season anyway.

    I want

    6. McLaughlin
    7. S O'B
    8. Heaslip

for this weekend, after that I reckon O'Brien to bench, probably has the most impact potential.

Yeah, I know where you're coming from there.

Given that it's Embra I'd probably go for O'Brien. He's got a bit more experience I'd reckon. (He's younger though, isn't he?)

Yup, just giving him a rest and making sure S O'B can still cover 7.

    15: Rob Kearney
    14: Shane Horgan
    13: Fergus McFadden
    12: Gordon D'Arcy
    11: Luke Fitzgerald
    10: Shaun Berne
    9: Eoin Reddan

    1: Cian Healy
    2: John Fogarty
    3: Stan Wright
    4: Leo Cullen CAPTAIN
    5: Nathan Hines
    6: Kevin McLaughlin
    7: Sean O'Brien
    8: Jamie Heaslip

REPLACEMENTS FROM: Bernard Jackman, Mike Ross, Devin Toner, Shane Jennings, Dominic Ryan, Simon Keogh, Jonathan Sexton, Girvan Dempsey

Interesting looking team, the backline looks tasty enough. Presume Nacewa is having the weekend off, or is he injured? Back-row also provides intrigue - average age around 23 I'm guessing. John Fogarty has a chance to nail down the hooker spot - his throwing looks vastly improved this year, and it might just be one season (or injury) too many for poor old Jackers.

While its odd seeing Berne start at outhalf, Sexton has always proved to be an excellent impact sub.

Why is Sexton being dropped in Leinster's first crunch match against the League leaders

Being dropped isn't really appropriate - Berne hasn't had a game at out-half yet. Cheika is still in rotation mode where he's trying to get everyone a bit of game time before the serious business starts in two weeks time. Nacewa is also out of the team, and he's been our best back so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,880 ✭✭✭Hippo

Rotation to give Berne time at 10, he's going to be the back up for the season so he needs the exposure.

    Drico has a neck injury.

For the same reason Jennings is, rotation. Berne needs some game time at 10 as well if hes going to be the sole back up. To be honest I am quite happy to see Cheika rotating the squads and giving everyone a chance.

Also fantastic to see Dominic Ryan make the bench, first year in the academy and only 19 years old. Hes a fantastic player. Leinster's academy is probably the best in the world right now.

    Ehm...

New Zealand Under 20s toughest match last season was the IReland game. They only won 17-0.

My arse we've the world's strongest academy, what about the Canes, the Crusaders, the Blues, the Sharks, the Bulls...?

    Fiiiiiiiiiiiiine.

Nacewa, Jennings and Sexton all being rested. Interesting decision, especially given who we're playing. Obbviously the Munster game matters more. ;)

McLaughlin's getting a great run in the team, and seems to be going some distance towards justifying it. Hopefully with Heaslip and O'Brien in the backrow we'll have two lads who can attack with ball in hand as well.

Interested to see how Berne's distribution works out at 10, with D'Arcy at 12, McFadden could get a lot more space, so good service from Reddan and Berne could result in tries galore.

Ross on the bench again, leaves me wondering if our team is too strong up front? (As in hte pack.) We'll have CJ, Mike Ross and Stan all looking for the tighthead jersey, and I suppose Stan covering for loosehead too?

Well, y'all are nothing if not optimistic! We've the best academy in the world (!), we're TOO strong upfront (??) and we're going to score 'tries galore' away to the league leaders in a ground where we traditionally struggle!

It's hard to ever look good against Edinburgh, as they tend to lie on the ball and generally irritate, but I have a sneaking suspicion we might win tomorrow. Edinburgh were very lucky to beat Ulster last week, and I reckon it might catch up with them. They seem to be due a defeat. Hopefully we'll try and run the ball a bit and take the game to them.

I'm not surprised by his progress - he looked a serious player a couple of years ago - his tackling was like Pacific Islanders , and he was huge too - great to see players like him , Healy , Conway and Macken coming through

    About too strong up front.

We've got four top level props, having three and an extra back-row might have been more balanced.

We seemed to break the Embra duck last season. Hoping that continues.

New Zealand Under 20s player's come from a variety of teams whilst all but 2 of Ireland's starting 15 come from Leinster. Leinster's academy is without doubt producing some astonishing talent right now and definitely have some internationals in the pipeline along with a few players with the potential to be world class in their ranks. To be honest people here will just brush me aside as a one eyed Leinster supporter but time will prove me right. Macken, Conway, Reid, Dominic Ryan, Jack McGrath, D.Kearney etc. are all going to be very big names in a few years.

There are some great players, but it'd be foolish to go about counting the chickens before the youth team eggs have hatched. Rugby has an enormous drop out rate after all.

Yeah, awful stuff. Lucky to be 6-6. Berne poor, O'Brien our most effective player.

Off topic, but looks like Geordan Murphy has just dislocated his shoulder over on Sky Sports 3... looks grim for him.

Surprised healy has been kept on, though he would have been replaced as 'punishment'.
