So, HIMYM season 5 kicks off tonight and its bound to be a great season as we'll get to see how the relationship between Barney and Robin works out and who knows, we may actually finally meet 'the mother,' but hopefully not as that would mean the end of the series.

The Spoiler Warning in the title only applies to episodes that have aired in the US, if you're giving info regarding an episode yet to air in the US, please use the spoiler tags...

I'm really looking forward to it. Some rumors are indicating that they will move even further away from the whole mother plot this season, which can only be good. The focus on Ted and the mother search is always the weakest link in each season...

Although, it will be nice to eventually find out who the mother is, but I agree I always prefer the storylines involving Barney, Marshall, Lily and Robin more than those involving Ted. Ted has grown consistently funnier over the years, thankfully, because I didn't like him at first.

Yep, Ted can be pretty funny these days ("The Naked Man" was brilliant) but that happens when they give him something else to do rather than whine about the mother for the whole episode...

I also enjoyed his encounter with the Goat...

Looking forward to this. The end of September really is the best part of every year. :)

Let me get this right: you like pretty much every show ever but think HIMYM is dreadful and the high point of the whole thing was Britney?!

Richard, you cease to amaze me. You've just started to discussion threads on two, of what I can only imagine are, the worst shows ever made, The Hills & The City. You seem to like every show that has ever been made, but HIMYM is the one you don't like!!! I don't even know how that works? It's one of the best US comedies in years.

And Neil Patrick Harris, is openly gay, so yes that was quite clear already.

Neil Patrick Harris is clearly gay.

Like CaptainNegative said, he's openly gay - that's been known for a long time now...

What does that have to do with the show anyway?

I didn't know he was gay!

Well *some* people like them shows, Boards members aren't all old foggies and hardcore dudes, young girls read Boards as well....so my threads are aimed at those who *do* like them type of shows.

And didn't we all spend some time last season taking the mick outta my TV choices?....like the movie, Get Over It!

That was Legen... wait for it ...Dary! Legendary.
Ted's storyline was hilarious, as was Marshall's, and the Barney/Robin/Lily story moved the plot along nicely and was also funny.
    Very glad it's back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

I didn't think it was as funny as some of the best episodes ever, but a solid opener nonetheless. Ted's epic screw up in the classroom was pretty funny. I'm not sure Barney in a relationship works, he's much funnier single (best Barneyism was the whole "women are like gremlins" speech :D) but we'll see where that goes. Poor Marshall had nothing to do in the episode though other than crack the whip and yell... oh well, maybe next week he'll get a good story. Still, great to have it back - I love late September :).

looking forward to this, hope they try more humour this year but hard to sustain it over 24 episodes.

    Enjoyed the first part.
Good to see it back on form.

So now we know how future wife first got to see her future husband!
    The plot thickens... LOL

    http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2009/09/26/himym-serious-mother-action-this-january/
How I Met Your Mother turns 100 episodes old this January, and it’s marking the occasion by handing fans the mother of all gifts: some major intel about the show’s titular mama. “There is some serious Mother action in episode 100,” reveals executive producer Craig Thomas. “It’ll be the closest Ted’s ever come to [discovering who she is]. He’s getting a step closer every episode this season, and episode 100 [we] kind of go bananas with it.”
Although Thomas won’t outright confirm that Ted’s future wife will be unmasked, he hints that he and fellow exec producer Carter Bays “are spending a lot of time trying to cast the female role in Ted’s story for episode 100.”
And if that’s not enough to keep viewers entertained, the milestone episode will climax with what Thomas calls a “big-ass musical” number headlined by the show’s resident song-and-dance man, Neil Patrick Harris. “There will be a huge Barney story culminating in an enormous musical number that we’re going to spend way too much of Twentieth Television’s money on,” Thomas says with a laugh. “Fans of Neil’s performance at the Emmys will enjoy the ending of the episode. It’s not a musical episode, but all of a sudden it becomes one. It’ll probably be one of the craziest things we’ve ever done on the show.”

You really like digging holes for yourself, don't you?
Your back garden must look like the surface of the moon. :)

HIMYM is one of the funniest, most consistent comedies on TV today. Good chemistry and great writing go a long way.

    Ratings! :D:D

Shows like HIMYM air on real networks and need more than minimal ratings to actually be considered successful. My point is though that if you don't like the show fair enough - but why do you feel the need to come here and tell people that clearly enjoy it that it's "pants and why is it still on", etc? If I think a show is sh**e, I just stop watching it (the only exception being Smallville ;)).

Chris Elliott has landed the pivotal role of Lily’s estranged dad on How I Met Your Mother.
The highly-anticipated family reunion is slated to air Nov. 23 when father and daughter come face-to-face at a Thanksgiving celebration hosted by Lily’s grandparents.

Just about Doogie Howser Neil Patrick Howser.
From what i've seen of this show, he does a good job as Barney. He's fairly convincing (and entertaining) as the less than conscientious lady-killer.
So much so you forget he is gay (or Doogie Howser :P )- which is a testament to his acting abiity.

Just watched a random old episode of this last week while I was sick and I cannot believe I haven't been watching this from the beginning. I ended watching four seasons in the space of week and now update with season 5!

Oh yeah I can't get Robin's 80s song out of my head so I had put it in my sig :D

    Great show.

Classic :). I love it when they set up sites referenced in the episode like that. Slapcountdown.com was the best ever though (seems the domain is now bought up by some fansite so I hope this doesn't mean no more slaps... :().

HIMYM has always been very good with online marketing using websites and such.

SlapCountdown.com was online at one stage too.. but is now a forum.

EDIT: Just noticed this was mentioned on previous page/.

So I started watching this last week and am caught up now and I've made this chart to display my last week.

2046 minutes of HIMYM in the last week
    .
    A week is 10080 minutes
    .
So that's over 20% of my week spent watching this show
    .
Things I'm going to do this week?
    .
Feel sad I'm not watching HIMYM

I watched 4 seasons of The Wire in a week once, I'd guess that's ~2700 minutes.

I liked the episode overall, couple of silly plots playing out separately from each other but good overall. "Goodbye, Sparky" was pretty funny :).

I watched all the episodes of this in about two weeks and was loving it up to season 5, which has been a bit cack, especially the most recent one.

Started watching this show on E4 with the girlfriend. We only found out it was on season 5 a couple of weeks ago! :o We thought is a new show! I thought it was going to be more dribble from the US but really enjoy it. Barney is just the best.

Really? It waz pretty dire in fairness. All the worst ingredients - Marshall and Lily being dull and couply, Ted at his mopey worst and the tired Canadian thing with Robin...

I thought Monday's nights was one of the best of the recent ones also!

The 'Robin 101' episode was absolutely atrocious.. and 'The Sexless Innkeeper' wasn't much better!

I thought season one was the weakest as Ted is really drippy most of the time. And the later half of season 4 wasn't so great, possibly due to the constraints of both Lily and Robin being pregnant IRL.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators Posts: 35,731 Mod ✭✭✭✭pickarooney

I thought once they finally got shot of Stella that Ted, and the show might go back to being funny, but alas... I'm not sure where they're going to go with the series as it stands - keep churning out the filler until the big whoop-di-do reveal of the mother or just get that out of the way and introduce some new storylines. It kind of feels like they've done the rounds having brought Robin and Barney together.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,906 ✭✭✭J-blk

I don't see them revealing "the mother" until the very end TBH. And you will see more "filler" episodes from now on, as the show will soon have enough episodes for syndication deals where so-called standalone episodes are in fact preferred.

Still, I did like the episode this week and hope they never stop with the Canadian jokes - it's an integral part of the show at this stage :).

filler episodes > ted and his boring story episodes

does anyone actually care how ted met his childrens mother?
