The Horror Board's Definitive 100 Horror Films

I dont think this has been done here before so out of boredom (and the need to watch something i haven't seen before) I thought this might be a bit of fun.

Basically a compiled list from horror board members of the Top 100 horror films to watch before you die, they did something similar on the all things retro board a while ago and it worked pretty well.

The Rules -
Each user can post multiple titles, but they can only post one at a time and each must be separated by another users nomination i.e -
User 1 - Film title
User 2 - Film title
User 1 - Film title

Keep the list numbered for ease of use.

Give the year of the film (So we can determine original, remake etc.)

Imdb Link would be nice but not strictly necessary

Film series are not allowed, if you want to nominate something from a series please specify film number and name in the series.

Widely regarded as the finest horror film ever made. I thought it was good but didn't scare me as much as other films. I guess its more how it stays with you after you watch it rather than just making you jump but i just didn't get it. Good but not great.

(2) Hellraiser (1987)

First installment of the franchise and introduced one of the most iconic baddies ever

(3) The Shining (1980)
This is a jem of a horror film no two ways about it. It has suspense, drama, rising tension throughout and some scenes that stay with you after finishing it. Jack Nicholson really gets into the role and shows why he is one of the best actors of our time. Thumbs up also to Shelly Duvall for her amazing performance of a wife seeing her husband decending into madness

Personally find the suspense in this film to be absolutely killer. Only watched it recently and it has aged very well IMHO. Is often refered to as one of the best horror remakes.

One of the oldest horrors around and is based on Bram Stokers dracula. Murnau couldnt secure the rights from Stokers estate so renamed the count to Orlok and the movie to Nosferatu. A silent classic

The first of the franchise, inferior to the sequel but introduced another classic baddie. Great suspense and some top scares, especially that bursting stomach scene...try watchin that particular scene with someone whos not expecting it! brilliant!! even the actors themselves didn't know what was going on..

Best of the franchise by a country mile, magnificent amalgam of chiling score, creepy cinematography that keeps the audience guessing, awesome iconic character in 'The Shape', and bold kids getting their comeuppance I defy anyone to not enjoy this film!

This probably wouldn't be my favourite of the 'dead films, but it has to go on the list first because of what it did for the genre. Spawned a terrific legacy from a legendary filmmaker, and was the beginning of a series that maintained its high standards more than most other franchise horrors.

Romero's zombie 'epic' is a great critique of American consumist culture but also an exceptional horror film with terrific characters and special effects.

Not much needs to be said really, as most late seventies/early eighties horror landmarks did it started a series of diminishing returns sequel wise but this original remains one of the great examples of when horror films plus a somewhat decent budget meant quality products!

The definitive cannibal movie and a commentary on the exploitation of indigenous people by certain film makers.I watched it again a couple of weeks and it still packs a heavy punch.

My favourite Zombie movie of all time and Tom Savini's effects masterpiece.Anyone that is impressed by CGI should be made watch this movie to see just how effective good horror make up can be.

While modern audiences are unlikely to find this movie particularly scary or shocking, it remains a true classic of the horror genre. It has a creepy unsettling tone, and the plot rattles along nicely. Some of the scenes are very disturbing, even to a jaded viewer like me.

This is a scary film. From the start the film creates an atmosphere of dread and foreboding, and it builds and builds. The film stays with your for days, leaving you unsettled, and possibly, almost in a state of despair.

A black & white silent German Expressionist film and one of the earliest horror films, this is an absolute masterpiece. The set design reflects the nightmarish quality of the story, and for all that it's not a gore piece, it's still one of the most effective horror films I've ever seen.

Went on to do 'the descent' after, but Dog Soldiers was the first horror by Neil Marshall. More of a B-movie but a very good one at that

You either love it or hate it....this film really freaked me out, especially the ending! First film to really take advantage of viral marketing on the internet, genius when you think about it...such a good idea. Goes to show that good horror films don't need ANY special effects, just a good story and creepy atmosphere

An excellent drama exploring the cyclical nature of violence and abuse in a story about a lonely Japanese executive who organises a series of auditions for a fictional film as a way to meet women. There's a sense of unease throughout the film, exploding into a final act that shows the likes of Saw and Hostel for the feeble imitators that they are.

I'd be in the hate the blair withc camp, but it did remind me of the recent one called 'Rec'. Annoying characters at the start (much like blair) but here they grow on you (unlike blair)

It feels wrong to have this film in a list that doesn't yet have Evil Dead: Army Of Darkness. I loved this film, it's a great little combination of stoner/slacker comedy and zombie/possessed limb horror.

Lucio Fulci's gore and sleaze masterpiece.This movie reachs levels of mysogony and extreme violence that few directors would dare film,not Fulci though.Those buying it should beware of the censored versions.They are cut by 6 or 7 minutes for most releases.The best release and transfer Ive seen is the one put out by Anchor Bay a few years ago.Though its now OOP and can get pretty pricey on ebay.

Stephen King adaptations come in a mixed bag. We've seen some abominations of his work, as well as some real gems (one of which has made the list already). But The Mist is from a director in Frank Darabont who has a flawless record at adapting King's work for the big screen. The big talking point about this film is its ending, marmite-like in making people love it or hate it. Respect must go to Darabont for not compromising his principles - the studio reportedly offered to nearly double his budget if he made it more
