Looking to join new gym in North Dublin

Hey Folks. I want to join a new gym in North Dublin. I live in Swords. My problem is who do you join. I received a "cheque" from Westwood in Clontarf which means instead of 499 euros join up fee I pay 31 euros. Catch is that I still need to pay offpeak 55 euros and 75 for use the whole time. That does not feel like a great offer to me to be honest. I have checked a few others like Alsaa which is 375 euros a month but crazily the main swimming pool is at a different place to the gym, Portmarnock is 550 for 14months and Jackie Skellys (which has a dire reputation from what I hear) is 55 euros a month in Swords. I have not checked as regards Total Fitness at Clarehall. Without going through all the threads of what is good and not, can someone suggest a good gym/swimming pool in North Dublin which is value for money , u won't be waiting for ages for a machine each night because it is so packed and where you don't have to pay a ridiculous joining fee amount. Thanks.

Ballymun Public gym has a bigger cardio section than WW clontarf and more free weights, you are never waiting for a cardio machine to become free and rarely waiting on weights. It has a 25m pool too and is only €7 a visit, i think there is an 18 month deal going too but im not sure of the price. I cant recommend it highly enough and there is no joining fee. The only con is the parking but i think they are sorting that out.

Op ideally your gym should be within ten minutes of your house. You'll find out why come January.

Realistically if your gonna spend money on something it has to be useable. The ten minute rule is a must for me. Watch out for gyms pricing themselves way over the odds aswell. Best way to find what suits is to call in to them and ask for a tour. Good Luck.

If it's important to ya you can make time to travel further (not you specifcially, but in general). I'd say I spend about 3-4 hours per week travelling to and from the gym.

Right now I'm already considering using a moped to travel to and from the gym. I reckon my ten minute rule is the only reason I'm still going after these last (terrible) four years.

Guess it depends on the gym too. If you're lucky enough to have a decent one within 10 minutes you're sorted. I'm lucky with Hercs, I get there in around 10 on a sunday morning when there's no traffic. Can take 30+ other days.

TF's 20+ minutes either way from me as well...

I don't think there's actually a usable gym within 10 minutes of me. Westwood might be at a push.

Just saw you are in swords... What about the one up the castle shopping centre, image or something - got some good bodybuilders there. I'm thinking of signing up when my membership runs out..

OP I'm in swords aswell and work on East wall road and unless there is a specific reason for wanting to use WW in clontarf I would probably skip it. It is quite a trek to and from it especially when every other gym is closer and for the money you pay you want something that is going to be easy enough to get to. Be it Ballymun gym, Northwood, TF on the malahide road, JK swords and Image in swords.

Myself I use the Ballymun gym as it on my way home from work and isn't to bad to get to from swords around 20 minute drive, now I'm not a massive fan of the gym but as stated there are a lot of other gyms closer to you and one of them will probably suit your needs better

The gym in Alsaa is about 35euro a month. You can use the pool in the airport.

Highly recommend Image Gym in Castle Shopping centre. It's cheap, got lots of free weights, the staff really know their stuff and will spot you if necessary. The only down side is the showers are crap, but if you can live with that, it's the one to go for.

If you insist on a fancier shower, then try Migym in Boroibhe. www.migym.ie/ Good gym, decent equipment, just a little pricier than I like.

I'm currently in WW Clontarf...not a big fan TBH its more of a Health Centre than spit on the floor type gym. With the Owl Ones Lycra brigade meeting down stairs for a Laté.

There's a nice little Gym in swords thats not as pricey or as far called Image H&F I think?

Wasn't impressed by Jackie Skelly in swords.

What about DCU gym on the Ballymun Road?

Not sure what their current fees are. I joined there as an alumni member last November and find the gym, pool and facilities to be great. Not sure what the general fees are though as I got an alumni rate of €250 for the year last year. Hoping that in the current climate they may have a good offer on their fees by the time I've to re-join again in November!

Northwood is down to €199 again, can't really go wrong with that!

But for a hard, rough bodybuilding gym with a great atmos, Image in Swords is terrific.

i'm in image in swords which is great for lifting weights and very cheap.
    http://www.imagegym.com/index.htm

I am also in alsaa - www.alsaa.ie which is also really cheap - not a great gym for weights but excellent cardio facilities but great facilities (non gym like bowling and pub) and a savage pool and it's dirt cheap and open late (10pm on sat & sun)

They're the best two - skellys is good but over priced and closes at 6pm at weekends which is a disgrace at the prices they charge.

Sportslink gym is ok but not as good priced as alsaa.

Really depends what you want from a gym.

Sorry folks, was in Total Fitness. They have a years membership for 450 euros per year and it is on the way to work. Is anyone a member there and what do they think? Thx

    Hi Lads

I've searched the boards, and everyone says migym in Boroimhe is expensive, but does anyone know what the actual prices are, cant seem to find them anywhere?

I contacted them, they kept skipping over the prices and just saying I should call down and take a tour.

    Cheers

Dont worry too much about prices - you're going to want to see whatever gym you're thinking off before you buy a membership so I'd go to migym, look, get prices and then decide. its a lovely gym with good staff. I'm not a member so dont know the prices

Ah yea, I agree totally, just wanted to check prices first, managed to get prices for everywhere bar here.

Last year, I paid 550 plus a 60 euro joining fee. I believe prices have dropped this year to around the 450 mark, for Migym.

I've just recently rejoined Image in Swords.

I think im going to start using Image on a drop in basis - my current gym doesn't have a squat rack, im currently doing a routing around clean & press - but would like to add, one day,
heavy squats, deads, military press, bench, rows - would be just the right mix for me to up the workload & push towards finishing my diet.. Silly Question but, I assume, image has all the equipment necessary to do this??

Yep. Squat rack, power rack, heavy weights. Also lots of spotters.

And run by John & Jo O'Tool who have a genuine interest in the progress of their members, a rare thing these days.
