Gonna guess no-one was at fault and no-one will lose their job.

    Any reports of injury?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,488 ✭✭✭Goodshape

No reports at all yet, as far as I can see. I'm just looking at tweets as they come in.

    Few more pictures :

Looks like it hit the bus side-on and got dragged off the tracks? Driver's area looks fairly mangled. Hope everyone's ok :-/

    //edit
RTE say no reports of injury at the moment : http://www.rte.ie/news/2009/0916/luas.html

Theres not much left of the front in those pictures. Lets hope the driver is ok.

Bus was northbound, and the Luas is on the Eastbound tracks. So what happened? Did the bus run the red light? Driver's cabin looks pretty mangled, I hope they're OK.

wow! I hope everyone is okay. Looks serious enough. I presume they're going to have to get a crane to remove the Luas? There is going to be a traffic nightmare in the city center today!

I presume that they'll uncouple the carriages that are OK and use another tram to tow them away. Don't know about the damaged portions.

There'll surely be an accident investigation.

That looks favourite from looking at those pictures. Extremely unlikely that a Luas would run a signal.

    possible signal failure i wonder?

Keep an eye on the RTE page as it's still being updated.

Now reporting "a number of people have been injured and at least one person is trapped in the Luas tram" :-/

My mum is down there and she just called me. She sounded very shaken and the words she used was that it was chaos there and that there was carnage. Hope by some miracle that everyone is ok.

Technically, the luas would have broke a signal, rather than a red light, IF that's what happened.

Sorry to be anal retentive, just to clear that up.:D

Jaysus, the Luas just crumpled but there's barely a dent in the 16 by comparison. Doesn't really inspire confidence in the Luas

I hope no one's seriously hurt :( One death on Dublin roads already this week is too much :(

so it went from no one injured to 5-6 people injured, 1 trapped to 15 taken to hospital. great reporting.

I blame al qaeda for this!

If there is one person trapped Id say its the driver the cab looks in bits! I know its early to judge but i doubt the luas ran a signal!! Please god everyone is ok!!

latest from RTE says 15 injured, 3 seriously and LUAS driver was cut free but no word on his condition. fingers crossed everyone is ok.

Just wondering, (hypothetically as the blame cannot be apportioned until an investigation is completed) could a LUAS break a STOP signal?

Had assumed that there would be some kind of mechanism, electrical or otherwise that would prevent a LUAS from moving until it had a GO signal?

    hope everyone's ok.

I'm sure the no side will find a way of blaming this on lisbon...

As far as i know if a Luas is to pass a stop signal at danger it will only let him do it at a reduced speed! Not jumping ahead but the bus could have broken the light! We will just have to see!! Hope everyone is ok!

Actually, Twitter is! Have a search under #luas. two regular Twitters live at O'Connell Bridge with a birds eye view and were able to get photos and updates out from their front window!

That looks really bad. It's not a very good junction there and I'm always very careful crossing Abbey St. just in case.

The 16 is one of the longest Dublin Bus routes from Nutgrove to Dublin Airport.

Just my own taste but I'd have said political "humor" in this thread isn't really humorous.

I saw it earlier on on Abbey Street and if nobody has been killed it'll be a miracle. The whole front drivers section of the luas had gone straight through the bus and was completely crumpled. I hope everyone has survived. Not a good week for Dublin City Centre's roads at all. :(

I wonder was there track damage im sure there was wonder will things be back on in the morning!! If not its a walk to smithfield!! Once again hope all involved are ok!!

I was on Middle Abbey Street when it happened. No where in media does it mention the Gardi. A few Garda Cars were speeding down Middle Abbey Street from O'Connell street, unmarked and marked cars. They were going really fast, so much so that people went out onto the street where they were driving to if maybe something had happened at liffey Street end of Abbey). One unmarked car was speeding as it drove backwards towards O'Connell and just within those moments the bus has gone through a red light and Luas ran into it. Maybe the Gardi scared the bus driver?

And this all happened before the crash ?

It just shows the danger of having heavy vehicles with practically no brakes in a busy city centre. It is just unacceptable. They should be limited to the outskirts of the city or go underground.

Even if this is the case, the driver should not put the vehicle somewhere fundementally unsafe. Still a very interesting development if this is true!
