Annoying lack of co-ordination with collecting ID cards!

I went in yesterday to collect my ID card as i had registered online last week and was told I could collect my card from the library reading room between September 7th and 30th. I'm currently on placement and don't have time off with the exception of Monday just gone. So I queued for about half an hour and when I finally got to the desk where the cards were handed out, I was told 'they haven't been printed out for that course yet'. I explained I only had today to collect my card and could they post it. No, they couldn't.

I was getting annoyed as I couldn't understand why the college tell you to collect your card when they don't have them ready. Surely it is just a matter of clicking and printing?? Anyways, I politely said I needed the card and would not be in Galway again to collect it until October. After a bit of a fuss they sent me to another desk where the card was printed in about 30 seconds.

Two classmates of mine had similar experiences today, and one came up to Galway to collect the card. Both were sent away empty handed. Anyone else experience this or was it reserved for 2nd yr postgrads??

Bit annoyed, maybe this ought to be in the rant and rave section.

The college couldn't organise their way out of a wet paper bag never mind organise something as simple as ID card collection or basic services such as on-campus parking for students and staff.

i think the source of your problem may have been the lady you talk to first. if it is who i think it is, she's been causing havoc in there for everyone.

I went in there about a week ago at lunch time (expecting them to be taking a lunch break any minute). There were quite a few queuing for registration but only two for ID cards. Your one just printed it there and then. Only took about 10 seconds. Looks like some aren't as lucky.

Yeah I don't know what is up with the ID card collection times, they seem to get it all confused. I went in and they said no this is only for first years when they say that you can collect them from the 7th to the 30th?!?! I don't know.... So I will probably go in tomorrow or something and get it then.... fingers crossed

When I went in, that lady on the door was ending away students by the dozen, telling them they couldn't collect their cards until next tues, next wed etc etc but why the hell does it tell you bewteen the 7th and the 30th? Only for I insisted I needed that card (politey but firmly I'll admit) did they give it to me and it took 3Oseconds.

Just found out today that my classmate who took yesterday off from placement down the country to collect her card was sent away as she didn't have a print out of her registration..even tho it was online and she had done it last week? I just said my name to the girl and she never asked for a number or anything..

I reckon I will complain as it really annoyed me this year..

Not long now before the desk reserve panic starts...lecturers telling us they have ut the books in but the library not putting them on shelves! I really think there ought to be an NUIG rant thread!!

I'm just started first year so I kind of figured that a lot of my confusion was just down to not being familiar with the whole thing. But I've found a shocking lack of co-ordination and lack of information in general this week. Actually not just this week...from the very first time I rang up to apply.

I went to see if there was any registration happening at Orientation...I wasn't confused that it was closed, as it was Saturday...but what's with the millions of notices on the door?...

    "Closed until further notice"
    "Closed for lunch"
    "Registration from 9.30 - 16.30"

I was like... what? are you open or not open? registration on WHAT DAYS from 9.30 - 16.30?

So anyway I went back on Monday and saw the queue and thought, great, things are happening this time. Then I realised that people were being sent away. All she said was "it's only Law and Commerce registration today". Anyway, found out that Arts is on Thursday (today). Not from her, mind you. But from checking online.

I know that we're not going to be spoon-fed and it's a long time since I was. But basic information...surely it would make their lives easier if everyone was properly informed as well as ours.

I guess this is something I can look forward to for the next few years then?

One of the most laughable things was how they didn't even bother putting up a sign indicating which queue to join. Myself and a few people were standing in the wrong one for about 20 minutes then had to get to the back of the other (longer) queue...

How long are you supposed to wait after registering before going over to collect your ID card?

You would think this would be made clear to people when they are registering..

I can't really wait until next Tuesday or Wednesday for my ID card anyhow because I need it for swipe card access to a lab literally right now.

Do you know yesterday I posted saying that I would come in today and get my card. I just did that and guess what???

I can't collect it until next week!... They have all the cards there in a box, my registration in hand and all they could say was, by looking at a timetable sort of thing, "No Second Arts isn't until next week"......

I know what you're thinking, yeah that isn't such a bad thing, and mind you there was no queue.... but that fact that I am NOT second Arts annoyed me. She didn't even look at my registration statement just assumed I was a certain course all because I said I was second year.

My question is... why do they say collect between 7th and 30th of September when you can't even do that?... All she had to do was hand me my ID card and then I would be on my way, but no... it has to be next week, plus when she went to check the ID cards to see if mine was there she had the wrong year in her hand altogether, so she stated that my card wasn't printed yet, when obviously it can be done in 30 seconds

ARGHH!!...... (OK i don't mean to freak people out or anything but this is just ridiculous)

Just collected my ID. There was a queue for a woman telling people which queue they had to go in. If they just put up signs I could have bypassed this queue.

Annoyingly, I uploaded a new picture when registering but my old picture was on the ID when they printed it. Not the end of the world and I wasn't going to try and get it changed but it's annoying all the same.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 62 ✭✭X_X

Well at least you got your ID... :L

Well you could get the photo changed if you wanted to. My friend had the same problem but she pleaded with them to change it and it didn't take 30 seconds to do...

Ah right that might make a little bit more sense, but I think I will try again and get it before I head to lectures... It is really annoying me though

do you know I actually feel like sending a link to this thread to both the students union and the college as i originally thought it was just my problem and everyone else was fine! Anyone else think i should? Doubt anything would happen but it's about time they were made aware of it.

You should cause it is a massive fail on the college's part.... Do they even know or care about it?

It's unlikely anything would be done about it but still, might be some material for the college newspaper :)

The whole ID collection thing is causing a lot of confusion for my crowd as well.Met a friend who's doing slt and she showed me her new card, it seems they had a set time to get theirs.I'm not sure when I'm supposed to collect mine, I assumed it would be when I was choosing modules (3rd arts).

hah!I think they're still making the most of the Park and "Ride" fiasco...
It kind of sums up the organistaion of the college.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 62 ✭✭X_X

Well I suppose that if you did it would make the college aware of the commotion the collection of the cards is actually making and how annoying it is to some....

also, even if nothing is done about it, it would make any new or existing students aware of the ever growing problem... :D

In case anyone from the Student's Union or college is reading this, the €200 Autumn repeat fee is a joke. GMIT students only have to pay €35.

While I do applaud the Student's Union for trying to fight the government's plans for the reintroduction of fees, you could have looked closer to home first and pressured the college over their rip-off €200 fee for Autumn exams.

Finally got my ID card today and I have to say that even though I got it.... it took a long time..

For instance I was standing in the queue for nearly an hour when this woman came to me and asked what year I was in and waht course I was doing... When I told her she said just go up to the desk there and the woman will give you your card.... "THERE IS NO NEED FOR YOU TO STAY IN THE QUEUE... JUST WALK UP"... Now if only she told me that before I would've been out of there much quicker..

So I walked up and handed the woman my registration statement... and low and behold... "Sorry, your course isn't printed out yet, just walk over there and they'll print it out for you"..... WTF??

Still not printed and again another queue....

I am so glad that it is over now for another year... Let's just hope that the organisational skills are much better...

Hopefully I won't be back in college next year to find out..

    So, I'm registered. Technically.

Have old student number, and new student number.
Waiting for these to be merged.
Shouldn't have been registered under the new number at all, but the fella wasn't arsed telling me that.

So was bounced to computer services, and back to registration.

Currently have two email accounts. Two blackboards, although now I can't access the new one, and the old one doesn't have me enrolled in classes.

According to fees office, I have zero fees to pay. Got an email today telling me I'll be issued a bank giro.

    I. Am. Not. A. Happy. Bunny.

Wow now that is complicated!!.... I mean they should really inform the students on what is happening and such....

Besides I don't think that half the people doing the registration have a clue on what they are doing at all...

    Glad you sent it, LadyPennyworth.

Might start another thread later about the overcrowding in some classes...it's getting silly now..

That happened to me when I did a part time diploma a few years ago, went to the hassle of getting photos taken as they insisted I needed them, then when I went to collect my card they had used a photo of me taken when i was in leaving cert!! (as in when i first registered in college 5 years previously I had used a passport pic taken a few months previous) Mortified!

The overcrowding thing is something that went on since I was in college as an undergrad and I can't see them ever doing anything about it. I hear they are even lectures on saturdays in some cases!
