Rude Health at RDS

Anyone else at this over the week end? I went in today for a looksie, it was ok lots of new-age health products so not really fitness related as I was hoping.

But one stand did catch my attention, it was basically a machine consisting of a vibrating stand with a cross bar yoke attached that you hold on to. I was amazed to see a big sign behind this (cant recall the name of the contraption) claiming this thing was excellent for "fat burning". The promoter was claiming that a half hour on this thing was the same as running 5k! I asked her the question as to how this this thing could result in fat loss when it requires no cardio effort whatsoever and was merely a vibrating plate. I also asked whether the same result could be obtained by standing on a washing machine, which she conceded it would but her product "would be much safer than doing that" !
She then said was not there for an argument and refused to speak with me any longer!

It amazes/ annoys me that they can get away with these ridiculous claims and that her stand was actually getting a lot of attention and interest

Yep, nut jobs. And probably nut-jobs willing to pay way over the odds for it.

A new contraption showed up in my gym the other day. Placed ober near the weighing scales, it looks similar to what you describe, a vibrating plate.

Yeah it begins with A thats all I can remember. Oh she also started waffling on that astronauts at NASA use this thing before they go into space, so when she came out with that line I knew I was dealing with a fruitcake. She tried to bombard me with "scientific" evidence that this thing is exceptional for fat loss and osteroporosis. I actually would have found the whole episode extremely amusing if it were not for the middle aged gentleman beside me who was falling for the bullsh1t hook line and sinker and actually contemplating handing his hard earned over for one of these things.

I reckon they do have a place in your gym, they have a track record with rehab and bone density, and stretching on them is more effective than stretching on the ground. But they'll never replace lifting iron.

and they definately wont cause anyone to lose pounds of fat (unless other changes are made!)

Yeah that was the point I was trying to make to the woman selling it but she was more comfortable focusing on the rehab aspect and totally disregarded my point about the fat loss claims.
