It's not aftershave, it's cologne.

Why do Irish and British people call cologne aftershave?

Aftershave is put on the face after shaving to help soothe the skin and to smell good. Cologne is perfume for men.

I call it aftershave because I put it on after I shave. I'm not one of the types to have a bath in it whenever I'm going to the shops. That's what the lynx is for:cool:

I just asked my dad about this and he says only wimps wear perfume.

He then told me he only moisturises after he shaves because he has sensitive skin... :o

They are two different things. The difference is the concentration of aromatic compounds in them, cologne has more than afteshave. Cologne is 3-8%, after shave 1-3%. Usually cheaper than cologne.

Both aftershave and cologne are perfumes. I have been known to put on aftershave after not shaving.

The name comes from when French officers used it to hide the sent of the galley slaves, who were chained to the oars for years.

I always use an aftershave with little to no alcohol content, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older

Because we're not American and cologne isn't something that sounds exotic to us, it's a town in Germany.

Who gives a fu*&. We get the gist, we just decide to call it aftershave.

I call it eau de toilette pour homme scent enhancer

its listed as 'toilet water' in the irish customs info documentation

It could be to do with french royality, they never had baths and they didnt have any toilets. they just **** and pissed in a corner of a room and a maid would clean it up. they used the eau de toilette to mask the bad smells.

hey just **** and pissed in a corner of a room

Hmm, to be fair, there wasn't much option.

I give a fu"K. I'm curious why we call it aftershave including myself. We don't call a carrot a cucumber.

A potato doesn't sound exotic to us but we still call it a potato. Im wondering how a whole nation begins calling something such as cologne by a false name.

Its a very important issue, alright.

Its possible that some people use Cologne and After Shave interchangably? Could that be it? Like they dont put the After Shave on their shaved face but sprinkled around the neck, like they do with Cologne, and can - in fact - use either or both without even shaving. Like meself?

the mystery could be solved here : Irish people are not slaves to silly marketing terms invented a generation or so ago to get men to wear perfume.

    /end thead

I don't see how your potato point clarifies anything, but however...

You imply after shave is a "false name", it's not. I'd also suggest that perhaps "Cologne" is a little misleading, as, I'm guessing neither aftershave or eau de perfume were invented there. So it's kinda like calling say champaign, "dachau".

    Crazy fucking yanks.

Frankenstein was the name of the creator, not the monster. It's like people who say Tannoy when they mean public-address system. Tannoy is a brand name. :pac:

I don't think that is at all similar. When folks say aftershave, folks usually take it that
you mean the smelly stuff that you spray on your neck that the girls cannot resist.

When someone says Cucumber, folks don't think carrot!

You guess wrong. The original Eau de Cologne, was unsuprisingly 'invented' in er Cologne.

    Acutally, yea. Damn right.

Is that because the yanks see it all as "old europe", I wonder? Or did the french nick it?? Was that the real reason Germany attacked? Do we need to rewrite the history books??

Well, the guy who invented it was Italian and named after the city he was living in so maybe it should be 'Acqua di Colonia'.

That's my point, people don't think of a carrot when someone says a cucumber, why do people think of cologne when you say aftershave.

I'd say a cucumber is about as similar to a carrot as aftershave is to cologne. Both cucumbers and carrots are vegetables and used in salads. Both aftershave and cologne are toiletries, one is put on your face after shaving the other is sprayed on your body.
