Plan away, skipping lectures for a day won't hurt.

I'd be more concerned with having to be in for 9:00 the morning after having stayed out until 6:00...

yeah i've been tryin not to think about that! it doesn't sound appealin! ya see my need for a timetable!

I've yet to see mine; I know a few people in that situation and I've a feeling I might be joining them...

I guess seeing your timetable won't really make a difference. If you've a lecture at 9:00, there's nothing you can do about it!

You probably wouldn't miss much, depending on how long you're going to spend getting ready. Why aren't you thinking about how great the Debs will be, instead of worrying about missing a few hours in college? :);)

very fair point it should be fun, thanks for the advice!

Mine's on Wednesday the 30th, so it will (just about) be done by the end of September!

Actually, assuming I stay out until 6:00, it runs into October...

Yeah I wouldn't say the 29th will be the most academic of days. What's your course, by the way?

Really? Mine was about the 6th of October last year. Luckily my first lecture wasn't until about 11am.

i'm screwed timewise for the debs tho

Hrmm.. that all I have in maths? Seems I should have more.. (modules 1111,1121, 1131, 1241 as part of TP). Well, if the physics modules are as conveniently timed as those, I shall be very happy. \o/

What? Aren't all those modules on the timetable? (As in on the TP one. They're also on the maths one for obvious reasons.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,383 ✭✭✭Aoibheann

Oh yes! But I think on first glance it looked kinda sparse (and thus lovely). However, I can live with 13 hours of maths.. Now I'd love to know where the physics lectures go and where my 3 hour lab fits into all of this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 170 ✭✭antiselfdual

Just save yourself a lot of hassle in both the short and long runs and move to maths now...

Labs used to be from 2 till 5 on a Thursday but it looks like they won't be this year as there are maths lectures then (that or communication between the Schools of Maths and Physics has hit a new low).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,383 ✭✭✭Aoibheann

Is it really *that* bad? :pac: I'm quite looking forward to the physics side of things too, though I did consider doing maths.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,082 ✭✭✭Fringe

The maths timetable looks alright but I can see physics making it horrible. Those free 9am slots are just waiting to be filled by a physics lecture.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,383 ✭✭✭Aoibheann

If starting at 9am meant finishing nice and early every day, it'd be acceptable.. However, I'm expecting a 9am physics lecture on a Monday to cap off the *ahem* loveliness of the 6pm finish that day. Joy! :pac:

    no, not at all...

Nah it's actually a fine degree, I don't want to bias anybody (I can't tell if this is a lie), so make up your own mind and be happy!

    Haha thanks! :D

Ah I won't be biased, but hey, I'll either like it or I won't once I get into it, and there's always the option to switch into maths or physics if I do end up disliking it. But hopefully I'll stick with it! :)

Woo TP ftw! Maths looks fine but cant find our physics timetable at all! Any clue Aoibheann?

Alas no! Any attempts at finding them have brought me to the local access bit, so I fear we'll have to wait another week.

Seems to be a fair few JF TP students lurking about the place for such a small class, looking forward to meeting everyone. Can't wait to get started! \o/

May as well say hello if this is a TP gathering! :)

Currently down for engineering but hoping to contact the tutor and switch to TP once I get to Trinity!

Another naive fresher here. I was wondering if I decided to skip a few lectures because of my debs (8th October), would I be able to catch up on them? , and how? If not would I be lost coming back? I just don't see myself starting college at 9 when I get home from the debs at 7.
Btw I'm doing JF European Studies, with French and Spanish if anyone has access to the timetables.

If you skip lectures you can just ask people in your class what happened and can you copy their notes.

A 9am start and a 6pm finish is looking pretty nasty!

How many hours a week are there in first year TP (roughly)?

I had that on tuesdays last year... we had like 3 hours worth of breaks throughout the day though, afair. Aaand... off the top of my head, there were around 23 hours per week. More in the first team, less in the last.

Got my new timetable. Nine hours including tutorials. only class on tuesday is at 9am though, not best pleased about that.

I am a loser with far too much time on my hands so from the following:

    Semester 1

Maths: 13 hours (from the timetable in this thread)

Physics: 3 hour lab, then in terms of lectures we have the following:
-What is Physics - 4 lectures
    -Seeing & Hearing - 18 lectures
-Special Rel. - 14 lectures (this totally was more last time I saw it)
    -Astronomy & Astrophysics - 9 lectures

So that's 45 lectures in total over.. 11 weeks (assuming we get the reading week!), which makes 4.09 hours of physics lectures a week. Let's say that's 4.1ish, with it obviously varying week to week as I'm sure we don't do half lectures. Then there's also physics tutorials every two weeks, and I'm not sure how many of those we have.

So 13 + 3 + 4.1 = 20.1 NOT including tutorials. But I'd say we have more than that somehow.

    Semester 2

Maths: From the 3 maths modules listed, each is 3 hours/week so 9 hours, also the computing module and I've no clue how many hours that has.

Physics: 3 hour lab, then lectures are:
-The Material World - 18 lectures
    -Electromagnetic Interactions - 18 lectures
-Origins of Modern Physics - 9 lectures

That's 45 lectures in total, again over the course of 11 weeks that's 4.09, so a little over 4 a week. Then again you have the tutorials, etc.

    So in semester 2 it's 9 maths + 3 lab + 4.1ish physics = 16.1 NOT including computing or tutorials.

This seems much lighter on hours that I'd figure though, but it comes from both the maths table linked previously in the thread, the 3 hour lab we know we have and the following list of physics lectures so there's at least some basis to my long winded post here. Maybe.

I'd wager it's far more likely to be around the 23 hour mark that PFM posted though, unfortunately.. :(

That is exactly the right combination of mathematical rigour and physical reasoning you need to do well in TP!

Ah the only way I'll miss them is if I sleep in. I got into a horrible habit of missing lectures in RCSI, and I'm not letting that happen again. >_< Skipping the early morning ones (I had 8.30am starts twice a week! Wrong. So wrong.) gradually led into skipping afternoon ones, into days..:pac:

Over in College Green, I'll apparently be down to 6 hours of contact time a week. 6. I know law students who have more lecture hours per week than I do. A fine day indeed...

(Of course, the prescribed reading looks like it'll be a killer, but that doesn't take away from the awesomeness of a 6 hour week)
