Same as I do about male ones.

If she can get me up and running, I feel fine.

To be honest, given how male dominated a job it is, if a girl has gone through it and become a qualified mechanic she is likely to be very interestd in it and so probably a decent mechanic

I work in a very technical engineering role where the consequences of getting it wrong can be devastating. I dislike generalisations but here goes anyway. The women I work with are generally extremely good at their jobs, they are less likely to take inappropriate risks, they analyse situations before acting and are not afraid to seek advice and consult with peers or managers if they are not completely happy with a task or situation. So I'd be perfectly happy to have a female mechanic look after my car. Also all the bad experiences I've had over the years with poor service in dealerships have come from male apprentices or mechanics with a 'have a go' attitude to taking on a job beyond their skills or understanding :D

Never had one. Wouldn't phase me either way. It's a car like.

Are you a female mechanic? How do you find peoples perception of you?

I know you said you dislike generalistions...but that's a whopper and as a male of the species who is a software engineer (what is a technical engineer?) it bugs me. I could flip the whole thing around thusly:

The men I work with are generally extremely good at their jobs. They do not take inappropriate risks and are excellent at working without supervision.

To be fair, as a software engineer, there aren't too many "inappropriate risks" that you can take in the first place. Hmmmm. I may choose to call that method inside the declaration of my for loop, even though that will cause several stack pushes. Will I? WILL I?????? :pac:

Oh no, new blood. Are you single? Kingtut will probably ask you out if you are so be careful :pac::p

I think if you're good at your job then brilliant. I'd probably be more inclined to go to a female mechanic over a male one if she was good at her job. I'd love if there was one near me. I've never heard of one in Ireland apart from yer wan in Fair City :D

I'd view them the same as a male mechanic. What makes the difference when I choose what one to go to is how they talk to me. For example there are three different places here, one I don't like because they bring the car into a place that I can go to or even see into and after that they have someone else talking to me, and she's not very patient so if I ask her anything she gets annoyed (oddly enough I brought my uncle in and he asked the same questions and she was very nice to him) so I don't go there.

Another garage that I kind of go to are nice and spend time sorting it out with you. I had a problem with the battery (needed a new one) and they spent a load of time trying to figure out the problem with me beside them asking questions (I like learning new things), they didn't charge for time.

The third and my favourite isn't really a mechanic, he used to be but has a different job now but still has a pit and a few cars. People that know him go to him on the weekend to fix the cars. He's a really nice guy and I go there with my father and they have a long chat about everything but, I'm not stuck there bored for some reasons there has always been the nicest kittens that just want to be cuddled (the last time I was there it started playing and eating my hair, all the guys started laughing). And, because this guy is doing it as a part time thing (and cash in hand too) he doesn't charge much.

To me it doesn't matter if it's a male or female, it's more so how they treat me.

ya i know wat u mean orla but sometimes how the mechanic treats the customer has a lot to do wit how the customers treat them. i.m not sayin u do this but alot of customers bring in their cars and tell the mechanics wat should be done and how they should do it

You get people like that with any job where you have members of the puplic, I'd had my share of them and they really don't help themselves.

Normally I'm nice to people but that woman in the first garage I mentioned, I had to get my uncle in to talk to her because whenever I asked anything she would get annoyed and I've a feeling she viewed me as a little girl that didn't have a clue about cars (only person I got that from), she wasn't even a mechanic, she was just there to talk to customers, answer phones and take the money.

I'm sure as a female mechanic you'll get more women going to you and the other side of the coin some men won't go to you for (I'm imagining the ones who think that it's a mans job and any woman in that job wouldn't be as good as a guy:rolleyes: sadly there are still people like that)

I think there should be more female mechanics. I've never met one. Liked Robin on Fair City though.

I wouldn't be telling you what to do with the car either because I really wouldn't know!

If I drove I would only use Mechanics recommended by friends who I would trust with such recommendations. So If one of my friends said "There is a good mechanic at XYZ, but she's a woman" Then I would have no problem using a female mechanic.

Never met a female grease monkey though.

I'd use a female mechanic no bother. In fact I was RIPPED off by the last male one that serviced my car. He had me in tears. although the guy i went to after was really decent

Female mechanics is a lot more complicated than male mechanics I've found. I mean with guys it's all out there, you can see basically everything except the prostate all squirrelled away up there. With females you've got the vagina, uterus and ovaries all tucked away, not to mention the plethora of hormones required to keep us ticking over.

Yeah female mechanics is way more complicated.

    typical man!!!!!

    I take offence to that.

A woman out of a boiler suit is better:o

    Sorry about that...

If they can do the job then why not go for it. If they can't then don't.

MJOR, just because it's a female mechanic doesn't mean they won't rip you off. In future get a quote before and check around for other quotes as well.

I don't mind too much if it's a woman who services my bike, as long as she knows what she's doing and doesn't rip me off.
