I'm twenty and I'm having the same problem.
Someone told me I had lovely skin a few weeks, and basically a few days after that, I GOT PLAGUED WITH SPOTS!

I'd recommend seeing a dermatologist and possibly changing the products you're using - could be to do with your make-up, your cleanser, moisturiser etc.

I'm going to do the same, and continue to drink my 2L of water a day.

I agree, I think you should see a dermatologist as it may be hormonal or a reaction to something. I know we tend to think of hormones as having stabilized by the time we're in our 20s/30s, but they can change. I was having a similar thing a few months back and saw a derm - spots would pop up monthly and would persist. He took me off the birth control I was on, put me on Yaz and my skin cleared up right away. No more spots!

I havnt changed anything i use, its like my skin just decieded to go on a complete wobbler for no reason its been 3 months now and no sign of improvement might be time to bring in the pros and go see a dermatologist

i'd reccommend Duac Its a kind of gel that you use once a day- i'd put it on after cleansing at night and it really helped my skin a lot.... its got to be prescribed and takes about 8 weeks to work.... ask your GP!

    +1 for the dermatologist.

Also, make sure you clean your skin every night correctly before you go to bed. Make up is definitely something bad for the skin and I know I've paid for every time I've given up on cleaning my skin before going to bed. :pac:

I'd recommend Dermalogica, but go get a proper Dermalogica consultation first rather than just buying the products by yourself. My skin has cleared up quite well since I started using it.

Get the doctor to prescribe zineryt, its a lotion you dab on twice a day, its a topical antibiotic. Its the only thing that has ever worked for me, and I've tried practically everything, including dermalogica. The dermalogica stuff is lovely and I use their cleanser and spf but I really think if you want to get rid of acne something prescribed will work better than anything over the counter. I had hormonal spots on my chin and after using zineryt for about 3 weeks my skin has never been clearer. I also make sure and drink up to 2 ltrs of water a day aswell so think that helps too. Its strage too cause I took the same antibiotic thats in zineryt previously but I took it orally (ie: a little pill) and it did nothing for me. I didnt hold up much hope for the zineryt then but for whatever reason, it works really well, maybe because you're dabbing it on the affected area, it also has zinc in it which I know is excellent for problem skin.
Everything works differently on different people, for me the zineryt is fantastic and I couldnt recommend it more.

I went through a few months around Christmas and after where my skin was destroyed with spots mainly around the chin and in between the eyebrows. I always had small ones every now and again but I was destroyed this one time. I tried everything even some cream the doctor prescribed. It was no good. It was never as bad even compared to when I was a teenager. I went back to the doctor and she recommended that I changed my pill to Dianette. My skin cleared up completely and I have been very lucky 6 months on to not have one single spot :D I hope I haven't jinxed myself by saying that :)

Seems like theres lots of suffering from spots in our twenties. My skin has definately got worse and more prone to spots as I've got older, which is annoying because my teen mags lead me to believe that Id have blemish free skin after my hormonal teen years!

I get spots along my chin too and started seeing a gp that specialises in dermatology at the beginning of the year. I went on Diannette and that didn't work for me so he started me on this topical gel called isotrexin. Its realy cleared up my spots an ,my skin looks a lot better than it has done in ages.

I think the best thing to do is go see a dermatologist. There is lots of treatments out there,it is just about finding the right one for you.

I was exactly like you, on Diannette and now use the isotrexin gel, only thing i find actually works and ive tried loads of different things over the years.

My GP is keeping me on Dianette for my skin after it went downhill when I switched. I'm 24. I do get the odd thing but very little in comparison. I was getting the spots on an excellent diet with lots of water so I believe diet and all that really will only go so far. I do think I touch my face too much though which can't help.

I decided to give up on oral contraception last January after using it for years. I was on Dianette and yasmin. My skin was perfectly clear in January when I came off it but degenerated very rapidly throughout the year until I got fed up in July. I went to a dermatologist and was prescribed roaccutane. I'm not sure if that was the right thing to do either or if I would have been better off on dianette, but he's convinced a four month course will clear me up for good.

It is a pretty serious drug though. Not to be taken lightly.

Vitamin E(E tablets:P) are great for the skin.
Dont touch ur face even when ur itchy, use a tissue.
    Drink lots of water.
    Silcocks Base moisturiser.

Never thought of the vitamin e might give that a go, ive started to use a visibly clear wash and mask its neutrogena hopefully the change of product might be enough:rolleyes:

I'm the same as you OP. I'm just gone 30 and have little white lumps on my skin around my jaw line, they turn into spots after a few days, now it is starting to come onto my cheeks. So like you I'm in despair thinking I've got teenage skin all over again.

I went and got a dermalogica facial and she did the skin mapping thing, and recommended non-oily products / non-comedogenic makeup (means it doesn't block pores) .
I have also read in a few different places that salicylic acid clears skin and prevents breakouts.
I have found neutrogena products that are oil free, and I think it is the garnier blackhead scrub has salicylic acid. I only changed over 2 weeks ago, so I have to give it a chance.
Keep us updated on how you get on.

St Ives has a scrub that contains salicylic acid too. I find it amazing but it's very extreme compared to a lot of scubs so it wouldn't be good for daily usage I would imagine. I use it twice a week and find it great. Quinoderm cream is brilliant too. Not as harsh as Panoxyl which really dried out my skin, much milder and worked even better for me. I'd recommend Dianette initially though. I went on it for a few years and it cleared my skin up. Been off it for a good while now and have had no trouble since.

I had a similar problem - im almost 30 and until a year ago I never had skin problems. I did and tried everything! I changed my products every 2 months and spent a fortune on Dermalogica/Clarins/Dior......all and any cleansers etc that were suggested, I would buy. I went to my GP and was prescribed 3 different types of steroid creams and gels. Nothing was working! I was just about to give in and make an appointment with a Dermatologist - but then i decided to give the Clean & Clear Advantage Spot Control treatment-kit a go. WOW! It has cleared up everything! It's worth a try - if you're willing to try one last thing! Good luck!

Ps: You can get it in any good pharmacy - Boots have it on sale at the moment for €14.99. You get a cleanser, moisturiser and a treatment gel in it. You use it twice a day. I saw results within 2 days - i've been using it for about a month now and I still cant believe the results!

I've also started using 2 boots products. Tea tree and witchhazel foaming face wash and moisturising night gel. Find them quite good too.

just thought id get back to ye all again- skin has cleared up no end- almost afraid to say that as any time i do i wake up with a breakout!!

Im blown away by the amount of women in or about my age from about 28 to early 30s) with the exact same problem!

Eventually went to the doc she said its late onset acne and the only cure is antibiotics and antibiotic cream. Not keen on the antibiotics as id have to have liver test every month and am a bit afraid of having clear skin but a fecked liver! so i went with the cream its seems to be working- then i lost it so have not used it in a few weeks but all is ok.

Also have stayed off dairy - well almost im a fiend for cheese!
Heard the other day that its the hormones in milk that upsets the balance and causes women of a certain age to overproduce male hormone which results in acne on the chin!!!
Anyone else heard that about the dairy? id love to go back on dairy i miss it!!

That's great to read, forestfruits. My friend had the same issue with her skin when she was in her mid 20s and even though she's a beautiful girl, it was an awful knock to her confidence. Can't remember what she used to sort it out - think it may have been pills. But her skin did clear up and is still clear a number of years later. :)

I had terrible skin for about 3 years (destroyed every shred of confidence I ever had) and within a month of using GP prescribed Duac antibiotic gel it cleared up. I'd definitely recommend a GP visit for anyone suffering with bad skin.
Glad to see it's working out for you, Forestfruits! :)

OP, if you think the spots are hormonal and don't want to go down the pill route, taking Starflower Oil really helped me and several friends of mine.

After just one month of use it almost eradicated monthly outbreaks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 572 ✭✭✭forestfruits

Giselle - your right I forgot to mention that I had been taking primrose oil but he starflower is much better- maybe its a combination of things but im a fan!!

If you don't want to go on yasmin or dianette with a hormonal skin condition then I would try Evening Primrose Oil. It may take a few months to work but I found that it did the same thing as Yasmin. Like the OP I went off Yasmin over a year ago and after a few months I would get hormonal breakouts on my chin but I have using EPO for the last 6 months and I only get a couple of pimples now as opposed to the boils I was getting back in September.

Also I know it sounds stupid but try not to stress about them when they appear because it only makes things worse. After all you can hide them with make up anyway so its no big deal.

Edit - there is a combination of Starflower and EPO which is pretty good.

I'm 26 and I've had terrible skin since I was a teenager. Actually I think it's has become worse in my adult years. I've tried everything: Benzyl Peroxide, the pill, various lotions, good skincare regimes, chinese herb stuff, and nothing helped, and most of them I just had bad reactions to. But recently I switched to a new GP and immediately he said he'd put me on Antibiotics, and got a colleague to confirm this was the best course. The cure for our problems is never immediate I'm afraid, but I've been on it about 3 months and my skin has cleared up so much. It's little things that make me notice how much better it is, like when I go to use concealer and realise I don't actually have that much concealing to do!!

The antibiotic he put me on is Tetracycline
It's broad spectrum, and I can take it with other medications so that's ok, and it's alright to have a drink or two or ten on it (somebody once told me that if you take the antibiotics you have to stop drinking COMPLETELY for 6 months. To hell with that!! Am I right???) :D

I'm in my early 30s and developed adult acne about 4 months ago. After researching, asking around and buying quite a few potions and lotions I finally went to the doctor today.
I've been prescribed Duac and Tetralysal, which I'll start tomorrow.

I'm somewhat anxious about the whole thing and was just wondering has anyone else here used these things, and what was the outcome (side-effect/clear skin/ flaky skin/mood swings/other... anything of interest really)

Also, does anyone know, assuming it does work (I've been told it will take a min of 4/5 weeks before I see any improvement), when I eventually stop using these products am I likely to be back at square one?

I can't believe this has happened. There have been no obvious changes to lifestyle/diet that I can think of to have triggered this. Perhaps it's an age thing?
It's making me sad! Whenever I look in the mirror all I see are spots, and not myself. I know how stupid that sounds, believe me. But it's knocked my confidence no end. Maybe I just need a good kick up the bum!

Okay, this turned out longer than expected, thanks for the opportunity to put it out there.

    xx
