Not doing this course, but should be taking the Software Process Quality module in the evenings next semester. Doing Concurrency & Distributed Systems in the day course too.

This is the current timetable for semester 1. Part time students should be doing Secure Programming and Professional and Research Practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-7.

    :(
I am trying to register but when I select "I Accept" in step 4 Rules & Regulations I got the attached alert and I can not continue to step 5!!!!

    Any advice?

I had some funny stuff happen when I registered too. It took me a couple of tries to get it working. Try clicking on the dot between step 4 and step 5.

Are you serious? I don't finish work until 5.30 and it'll take me about an hour to get over to DCU. Is it normal for part time classes to start so early in DCU?

What's the story with the timetable? I went to timetables and I selected the course code MSE and I selected Year 1 part-time and it returns this which lists two modules CA654 & CA644 which are not on our course. I'm confused. Can anyone shed any light on this please?

I have sent an e-mail to the helpdesk about this. They are probably not the right people to send the query to but hopefully they will be able to put me in touch with the right person. Anyway, I'll keep you posted on any developments.

Yes they are on our course but since we're first years our semester one timetable should be for CA640 and CA647

I am so confused about this...

    I just got this email

    Dear Student,

I would like to apologise but the schedule of lectures on the part-time MSc in Software Engineering Course has changed.

The Registry are currently registering students so it is too late for them to register you for the new modules. What you need to do:

    - Register for your original modules: CA640 Professional & Research Practice; CA647 Secure Programming for Semester 1. CA648 Formal Programming and CA650 Software Process Quality for Semester 2.

    - Look up timetables for the modules you will actually be taking: CA644A System Software and CA654A Information Systems Architecture for Semester 1. CA670A Concurrency & Distributed Systems and CA649A Service-Oriented Architectures for Semester 2 and attend these lectures.

    - During the week of Monday 5th October to Friday 9th October, you MUST fill out the change of mind link on your portal page to change the modules to the correct ones as above. This should be done online. Please log on to your portal page with your username and password. Further instructions will be displayed there.

Can you send me a reply to say that you have received and understood this email?

    Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

    Kind regards,
    Kathleen,
    School Secretary.

I also asked about the lecture times and this is the response I got:

    "....all part-time lectures are scheduled
for 4-7pm. I'm sorry if you expected otherwise, but I don't believe that
any other times have ever been advertised"

Disaster :mad: I wonder if I can get my money back as I don't finish work until 5.30

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 792 ✭✭✭mmalaka

    man thats bad...
    should we attend every week?
can we do something about this?perhaps email them as a groupe or something?

I know mate, it's a complete joke. In my mind a part time course means it is run after work or on weekends. I've e-mailled them to say that the indicative timetable on the course information webpage looks like this - which looks like a full time course timetable to me but looking at it from their perspective it is both the full time and part time timetables on one form (although i'm not sure how we were meant to know that)

I have also asked them if I can have my fees refunded if work tell me that I can't have the time off. I'm extremely annoyed....:mad:

plz let me know when u get a reply from them

perhaps no need to attend every week

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 792 ✭✭✭mmalaka

from the timetable search page, when you select the MSE and 1 part time; u have 3 options Day, Evening, & Day&Evening....

I selected the Evening options and that show the classes starts at 17:30... so can we attend the 17:30 class or the 16:00 class???

When you select eveing only it will only show classes from 5.30 onwards so it will show a lecture from 17.30 to 19.00 on Tuesday and Thursday. However the classes actually start at 16.00. I have had this confirmed by the Kathleen (the secretary for the school of computing) via email.

I've decided to defer and start the course next year. It's just not feasible to leave work early two days a week this year. Good luck with the course mate. Let me know your first impressions of it when you start lectures.

I sent emails to the instructors about the time tables and that it is too early, they told me this is coz they want to avoid the traffic rush hour traffic

Seriously??!! Surely the college must realise that they would get more students on the course if they ran it outside of work hours like a normal part time course. I can't believe they are pandering to the lecturers like that when I'm sure there are loads of lecturers looking for work at the moment who would be more than happy to work in the evenings.

Actually mate, if you (or anyone else) in this years class plans to organise a petition to get lecture times changed you can count on me for a signature. We did it when I did my degree at night in the NCI to get lectures moved from Saturday mornings to Wednesday nights.

thats could be a good idea... come next week it is supposed to have a lecture and we can talk with the guys about that...

I think I will defer too
I talked to my boss about this and it is not approved
    What about the fees?

You need to fill out this form, get it signed off by Prof. Joseph Morris and then submit it to The Registry before the 30th of October. Make sure you mention that part of the reason you're deferring is because of the lecture times - maybe they'll change them for next year.

As for the fees you will need to contact the fees department directly once your deferral has been approved. I might ask for some of my fees back but I'll probably leave at least half with them to use next year.

So If u defer y can ask for your fees back?

A petition won't work. Those modules are shared between full-time and part-time classes, ie. part-timers are in same room as full timers for 4pm slots... cost savings and all that. I doubt there is any change of a time change.

I'm not sure to be honest. Might be worth giving the fees office a quick call.

    Hi waraf, mmalaka,

I have just applied for Msc in software engineering for 2010. You guys are continuing this year or got fee back and applying for next year?

I have deferred until next year. When you defer you don't get any of your fees back they just transfer the fees over to next year.

I was in touch with a guy who started the course in September and I asked him for advice. He said that you need to be good at Linux scripting and C. so if you're planning on joining the course next year and you're not familiar with either of these subjects (like me) then now is the time to start....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 128 ✭✭maskabun

    Hi Waraf,

I was believing that Unix will be only one subject...and mojority of the subjects are theoratical...
Up to what extent we should learn Unix...any idea?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 128 ✭✭maskabun

    apologies, not Unix but Linux.

I think the Linux scripting is quite detailed. The actual quote from the e-mail I received today was...

"you basically need to be a Linux head to do really well in this course"
