    Hi!

I am want to start competing in PL competitions in Ireland next year.I have a couple of questions if anyone can help, please do..........

    1) I have looked on the Irish Drug Free Assoc site and want to compete in the Women's category at 53kg, is it worth getting equipment for lifting or am I better off just working on my strength and technique for my first comp and then getting equipment?

    2) The Irish Drug Free Assoc has women's records posted on the site but are the records for equipped or raw lifts or is the women's category open?

    3) I have approx 6 mths until a comp next year and I am only in my 1st month of a 5/3/1 program, will I be able to make enough gains to get a respectable total?

If anyone wants more details from me please ask and I will post them for you, thanks!

Cool, great to see more women lifters here! I was just wondering your lifts that your currently doing atm? 1rm in squat dead and bench like. Regardless of what your lifting id say the majority of plers here would reccomend you do a competition no matter what!
Im currently working towards my first comp too and im planning to compete in feb too!

I'm hoping to compete in my first comp in february too and im also following the 5/3/1 programme

as for equipment, i dunno really, it;ll take a good while to get used to benching in a bench shirt, squat suit etc.
i'm just working on raw lifts

It doesn't actually matter what you're lifting, so don't listen to Cardio (ha - cardio :P)

"Raw" lifts will be posted as "unequipped".

It's not worth your time buying equipment unless you've experienced lifters around you to help get the most out of it. A belt and wrist wraps are perfect, oh and ya need knee high socks!

    Anything else, fire away.

My lifts aren't very impressive at the moment, I'm hoping for some serious improvement in a few months!

    Bench 40kg

    Deadlift 82.5kg

    Squat 60kg

Knee high socks, belts, wrist straps..... I'm glad I'm not going to do this for the glamour!

Not quite down to 53kg yet, still have 4kg to lose. Trying to drop wright very slow so I don't lose strength, have dropped from 60kg to 57kg in last few weeks so on track I think

youl be fine! good that you have to cut for your weight class too!, means you will probably look better aswell. and even at 57kg they are good numbers

Wraps, not straps!! Wraps are the things that keep your wrist locked, straps are the things that let you hold onto the bar, and aren't allowed in competition.

They're good numbers, are you familiar with the powerlifting rules?

Sorry, wraps...... I understood what they were. I have been to a comp and seen what goes on so I'm familiar with the rules but then again it's probably way different competing 1st time.

I guess I'll leave the bench shirt and squat suit until after I have competed, I looked at the prices and they're expensive anyway

Your numbers are good. I'd say stay away from shirts and suits. They're more complicated than they look, they're for advanced or 'higher-end' intermediate lifters. Anyone else who wants to try them out would want to have people around who really know what they're doing.
