From another forum, with the Apple event tomorrow, rumours are that software 3.1 will be released tomorrow !

    Highlighted rumours are:

Features are probably going to be similar to the following:

    * Video editing on iPhone 3GS wont overwrite the clip over the original when you are editing a clip.
    * A new option for checking tethering data statistics.
    * iPhone will now vibrate whenever you switch to the mode where you can move and arrange icons on the iPhone home screen.
    * Improvements in the performance of Compass on iPhone 3GS.
    * Directional orientation in Google Maps app is now more accurate.
    * Copy/Paste support for address book and numeric keypad in Phone application.
    * “Fraud Protection” toggle has been added to settings under Safari.
    * iPhone boot time is now faster.
    * Voice Control over Bluetooth.
    * Password-locked phones will now ask for a PIN, the first time the device is plugged into a new computer for syncing.
    * New APIs to enable third party apps to access videos and edit them.
    * Developers can now work with an iPhone wirelessly (WIFI) instead of having to connect it to their development computer via USB.
    * Non-destructive video button names changed to Trim Original and Save as New Clip, this should help clear up the confusion caused by the original names Save and Save a Copy.
    * New enhancements to Core Audio has been added.
    * Support for copy/paste of videos into email.
    * Support for Instruments (on your Leopard or Snow Leopard OS X machine) over Wi-Fi instead of USB for developers to test benchmarks in apps for memory leaks, performance etc.
    * Video attachments can now be saved into photo album.
    * Improved battery life.
    * Failover support for HTTP live streaming.
    * Support for VM Tracker in Snow Leopard.
    * Improvements to OpenGL and Quartz.
    * MMS support for AT&T customers.
    * Official API support for Augmented Reality apps. (unconfirmed)
    * More accuracy in battery % meter. (unconfirmed)
    * A toggle for Batter % for all devices. (unconfirmed)
    * Password protection toggle for “Find my iPhone”. (unconfirmed)
    * Real-time zoom for camera:
    * Numerous other bug fixes.

Really hope battery life is improved !

    +1 on the battery!

Since tomorrow is all about iPods, shall we nominate this as the official ''watch'' thread?

Nothing in there that really floats my boat tbh!

Obviously battery life and maybe the extra cut and paste bits, but it's no "3.0". :D

Anything extra in the battery department is always welcome :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

...and badly needed. IMHO this is the only major drawback of the two products. Seriously weak battery life. Maybe not so much for the iPhone because it's aimed more at the business market, and most of the day you're supposed to be doing, you know, your job. But the iPod Touch is 100% toy and I would really love it to have a super battery life. Pity about all the science that means I can't have it.

If it is true, I will be happy with majority of these updates. Also next major software update would be called 4.0...

Augmented Reality is supposed to making an appearance with the 3.1 update too. The camera zoom sounds worthwhile, and definitely a +1 from the PD camp on battery life.

I was also hoping there might be a software update in it to improve the power to the antenna in the 3GS....Reception is much better on the 3G
Still all the other items are welcome.

(P.S. I know it's off subject but I'm fairly new to boards.ie, how do I thank people for posts)

Only thing on that list of interest to me is battery life.

Apple have "improved" battery life on the iPhones since day one yet i still have to charge it daily.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,264 ✭✭✭✭jester77

Yip, battery is poor on OS3.0. I had to turn off push as I was having to charge the phone a few times a day. With Push turned off I can just about manage from morning till night and leave it charging over night.

think I'll hold off on updating then as am not convinced it'd be worth losing tethering for the sake of a few minor updates. Will iTunes 9 break it too?

I have 3.1 installed. Ive noticed no differences other than iPhone backup taking an eternity to complete.

Has anyone with the 5 icon dock had issues with the icon management in iTunes 9? I'd imagine it screws it up royally, not to mention all the hidden icons I have (Stocks deleted, etc) :(

    Hi all,

Does anyone know where I can get the 3.1 ipsw file from?

Every time I try to download it it gets to 99% and then gives me network error 3259.

I've googled but all I can get is beta versions.

not a lot to go on there, do you lose the option (expected) and then can't put it back with a different the carrier file?

3.1 breaks tethering on O2 and I have noticed my phone was a lot slower this morning doing basic tasks.

I rarely used tethering but it was handy to have in an emergency. O2 Ireland are appalling with their iPhone experience. I generally love the phone but am really annoyed with O2. So much so that I wont get the 3GS as committing myself to another 18mths with O2 would be a nightmare.

Besides offering the phone, they have done nothing to support the additional iphone feature sets such as tethering and visual voicemail. Fair enough the voicemail could cost them to install but tethering is a simple service to enable which existing customers could use within their 1Gb allowances. What's worse is that even though their customer service rep stated tethering is on the way soon (months ago) their has been no update since.

In protest I think we should all switch off our wifi by default until we use up our already paid for 1Gb allowances each month!

Any suggestions on blogs or sites to monitor for tethering to be fixed on 3.1 ?

I only got my iphone yesterday and won't be jailbreaking it so I took the 3.1 update not realising/thinking it could break the tethering. Not a deal breaker but something I'd like to have available to me.

I have a Italian 3G on Three and the tethering options are still in the settings and I can enable it.

I will try later to see if it still works.

Checked later and I found the option vanished. So I can no longer tether with the iPhone

I can't find a single useful feature in 3.1. Not one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,207 ✭✭✭miralize

    app managment isnt useful?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

It certainly is! My favorite feature of the whole keynote actually :D but I thought that was an iTunes thing and not a firmware thing? If it is a firmware thing then I completely retract the previous statement.

Is it safe to use itunes 9 with jailbroken/unlocked phones on 3.0/3.0.1?

yes, untill its possible to jailbreak 3.1, then you can redownload those apps.

One of the features that I like in 3.1 is that you can use Voice Control (on 3Gs) using a bluetooth headset.

It was a bit of a bummer when I got the 3Gs first and tried to do this with my generic car kit. All better now :)

currently if u upgrade to 3.1 inadvertently or otherwise, it is not possible to downgrade to 3.0 to rejailbreak,if i understand things correctly??

I'm using Itunes 9 now with my jailbroken Ipod Touch 2G (3.0), doesn't cause any problems except it breaks Iphone Browser(the filesystem viewing thing) for some reason. Don't update to 3.1 firmware of course or you'll lose your jailbreak.

Plus you wont be able to roll back to jailbreak.

i have to restore my ipod touch, jailbreaking caused a slight problem, well using categories did, apps gone missing etc. so i want to re jailbreak it but when i try to restore it itunes tells me that its going to update to 3.1
is there any way to stop that from happening?

EDIT: found this on macrumours, in the event of apps going missing

    1. Go to your Settings
    2. Go to "General"
    3. Go to "Restrictions"
    4. Enable Restrictions
    5. Enter in a passcode and confirm
    6. Disable Restrictions

    they appear again

yea it will prob be another week or so they say

and once you go to 3.1, there is no way you can downgrade back to 3,0 or 3.01 apparenty, so be careful of that
