Come on the Banner! Would be nice to see a different name on the trophy especially given Clare's first Munster title this year after the controversy that surrounded last year's Munster final against Tipperary.

I think Honan is an injury worry and Collins is gone with a broken shoulder so favourites tag is back over to the Cats.

Collins is def out, honan will start apparently if reports in the local media are right!!

KK were always favs @ 8-11 and Clare 11-8.

Lets hope Honan plays as he would be a massive loss. We have a great chance in this and it could be a cracker. I have been massively impressed with the teams spirit and character. In both the Waterford and Galway matches a lesser Clare team would might have dropped their heads but this team keep on fighting playing fantastic stuff.

didnt think Clare would be seeing the hallowed turf of Croke Park in a hurling sense this year

Clare definitely have a chance..its only Kilkenny ..:D

heard that too. Apparently the pitch is destroyed in front of the Hogan stand. They'll blame the Cats for going onto the pitch but to be honest the pitch hasn't been right since the U2 concert replacement.

I also heard a rumour that the pitch will be replaced again in November at a cost of €1.2m

Whoever won the pitch was going to be invaded. It will be the same poor conditions for both teams but hopefully it wont effect the standard of the game. It will be exciting anyway. Hopefully a good crowd head to it!

I hope so too. Finally get to put that Munster Final in Ennis last year behind us. Same as the last two matches we're going in outsiders. Does anyone know what ticket prices will be? Hope they don't do Thurles in it and force everyone to the most expensive ones. Shouldn't be complaining, nice to spending a few quid to watch a Clare hurling team in September. Win lose or draw a crap hurling year has been turned around to a great one for us.

Apparently Honan is fit to play. As a Kilkennyman, I'm torn between wanting to see him turn out for Clare (he's such a prospect!) and not wanting to see him turn out for Clare (he could kill us).

"Clare's hopes of landing their first Bord Gais Energy All-Ireland under 21 hurling title at Croke Park on Sunday have received a double boost with the news that Darach Honan and Cathal Chaplin are expected to be fit.

The scoring hero of the Banner County's semi-final victory over Galway, Honan suffered a hamstring injury while playing for his club Clonara in a recent Clare SHC tie, but he has been responding well to treatment and is set to take his place in the full forward line.Honan has racked up 5-10 in the campaign to date with his 2-4 haul pivotal to their thrilling extra-time win over the Tribesmen.

Cathal Chaplin has also recovered from a broken finger and should be fit to partner Enda Barrett at midfield."

I would imagine that we will outnumber the Kilkenny fans at least 2 to 1. Kilkenny have had many trips to Dub this year this is our only one so I think lots of people will travel because of this. My place in Dub is already booked out for da weekend :pac:

The KK crowd on Sunday might be bigger than expected by this thread. KK feature in the earlier camogie final and the girls will attract additional KK support.

Didn't realise that my bad, should be a pretty decent KK crowd so which will only make a good atmosphere hopefully

I'd much prefer the 21 final to be in Nowlan park or Thurles or wherever.Much better atmosphere. However I'm glad it's on after and not before the camogie, there had been talk of putting it on a 12pm before the Junior Camogie, that would be wrong IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 676 ✭✭✭Nickibaby*

There would be a better atmosphere in Thurles. The semi final Clare v Galway was just brilliant in Thurles. But it is a final after all and probably best it's being played in Croker :)

I wouldn't bank on it. Many of those "loyal" Kilkenny fans who last week were trying to get tickets to go to what was their first match of the year, won't even know it is on. Under 21 finals don't bring out the sunshine fans, even when there are members of the Senior team on the Under 21 team. The real Kilkenny fans will be there, but a lot of black and amber flags that were there last Sunday will be put away now and won't be seen until the next time Kilkenny are in the senior final. The "one match a year" people have done their duty.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 377 ✭✭djScarey

You could be right, Flukey. Nobody wants to go to Dublin unless there's a real good reason to. A lot will also resent the 30€ triple header con.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,001 ✭✭✭✭Flukey

Their county is playing. That is a good reason. Last week, in their desperate search for tickets, they'd have been telling people how big a fan they were and how deserving of a ticket they were. This is their chance to prove it. There were lots at the final last weekend, that weren't even at the semi-final. For both Hurling semi-finals, most of the upper tiers were empty. If you then removed the support for the losing semi-finalists and put what was left together, plus the neutrals that were at the semi-finals, there would have been a lot of empty space in Croke Park last Sunday.

But as always, all these loyal and true fans (or so they were telling the people they were trying to get tickets from) suddenly appeared in their thousands last Sunday. In a "now you see them, now you don't" trick, lots of them will have returned to their no interest whatsoever attitude that they have for 364 days a year.

They may resent €30 on Sunday, yet for last Sunday had no problem with €70. If they are really interested and really the true fans that they claim, they'll pay. The ones that really are, will do so. Many of us neutrals will be there too. It is where I plan to be, as I was last Sunday. I've seen Kilkenny play in more matches this year than many "loyal" Kilkenny fans have, and I am a Dub. If anyone even just saw Kilkenny play twice this year, they'd be at more matches this year than a lot of last Sunday's "loyal" fans were.:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 377 ✭✭djScarey

Yeah right, Flukey. Nowlan Park attendances often better 10,000, so per head of population (Kilkenny county everyone=85,000), demand for Dublin's home games should be around 200,000.

Every county has it's "fairweathers" and I hope to see how many honest Dublin fans will get tickets when the Dubs find themselves an All Ireland final.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 113 ✭✭DJ Dodgy

To be fair I was suprised there wasn't more Clare people there at the Galway semi final. But I would expect a fair turn out given Clare have seen very few all ireland finals in hurling at any level. (Could it be as few as 8?! (4 senior, winning 3, 2 minor, winning 1, 1 Junior AI in the early 90's and this U21 on Sunday).

Anyway out the gap and won't be on again until after the trip up on Sunday. Looks like a great weekend ahead, super weather. Here's hoping that we get a match that does justice to a competition that has produced some of the best hurling of the year.

    Come on the Banner!:):rolleyes::)

In fairness anyone who really wanted a ticket last Sunday could get one so i wouldn't discourage anyone from going just because they hadn't been to every game all year.

Secondly I think the attendance this sunday will be impacted by the venue and the time more than the price.

I think they are using the U21 final to artificially increase the attendance for the Camogie, without the U21 game the attendance would be pitiful. As I've stated before Thurles would be a far more suitable venue and would generate a far better atmosphere.

I wasn't having a pop at Kilkenny fans lads, just making the general point. As was said, and has been said in this forum over and over again by myself and others: every county has its sunshine fans. It is just disappointing that so many of them will follow their county in one final, and within a week of it, not turn out at all. That applies to any county and we see examples of it regularly. Some won't even show up on the same day in the same venue, as we often see when a county has a minor and senior team playing. It is not that they couldn't get there until then, just that they don't bother going in until the senior game.

The real fans will follow their team and grade, gender, venue, expense or time is not an issue for them. They'd prefer if it was closer and cheaper of course and better timed, but they will still go. Teams want to play in Croke Park and you've got the Kilkenny team in both the Camogie final and the under 21 final, so the Kilkenny fans should be there in their thousands, like they were last Sunday. They won't be of course, but it would be nice if they were. That would create a good atmosphere. Anyway, I'll be there and some of you guys will be too, and we'll enjoy it. That's the most important thing.:)

You'd be right to have a pop at them. At every All Ireland semi and final this decade they've been outnumbered at least 2:1. It was the same last year v Waterford and the year before against Limerick it was probably 3:1. You can put your house on Cats fans being outnumbered by Clare followers again on Sunday. They have amongst them the greatest hurling team of all time yet many of the supporters dont seem too bothered about travelling to see them. The mind boggles!

No,those numbers seem about right.Kilkenny have very low support at matches outside the final compared to most teams. It can look a lot stronger though because of the colours. The black & amber is such a strong colour it stands out just like corks red.Compare that with Waterfords white, they have one of the biggest followings but it never looks it cause white doesnt really stand out.

And a good example would be the need to have the waterford vs cork qf match a couple years ago the headliner instead of the kk vs wex semi. The GAA knew cork & waterford would travel so they seized the oppertunity to bundle it with the semi so they could change more and put it on after the semi cause most of the cork/wfd support would have left before or half way trough the semi cause it was gonna be a gimme for kk.Cant be having the stadium emptying on tv

I find myself defending Kilkenny... This cannot be good.
I think Kilkenny are in so many matches, so many finals people can't get to them all. I mean if the Kilkenny fans were to go to all they're intermediate, senior, under 21 and minor finals..

People are only going to go to some of them and this is where it sounds terrible. Kilkenny are winning in so many finals it doesn't have the same excitment as it may for Clare in the under 21, or like us last year in the senior.

So I think between semi getting used to it and the price Kilkenny fans are just kinda divide themselves up to which matches there going to attend.

Now for the next few hours I must watch youtube videos of waterford matches and repeat 'I support Waterford and Kilkenny is the rival'...

Thats it.Give me your username and your jersey.Youre not allowed have them anymore :pac:

I dont think its a simple as them saying ill go to this one and not that one.Ive been going to league and championship matches pretty much all my life and any kilkenny ones,it always seems to be the same faces but come final time the jerseys appear everywhere and are gone within 2 weeks if they win and straight away if they lose not to be seen until the next final

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 7,849 Mod ✭✭✭✭suitcasepink

How on earth do you remember seeing the same faces at different matches!? :pac:

I still think though, that giving kilkennys population, the amount of matches they're in(and winning), the price of the tickets your neevr going to see a massive Kilkenny crowd at any one match. I'd say if you added up the kilkenny fans at every match in the year you would get quite a substantial number.
I know my dad is a real mount sion man if he knew what I was typing i'd be thrown out of the house! lol

    0.15 - 0.14 to Clare they deserved it!! :)
