Weights Query

Forgive my ignorance with this question because it will more than likely sound dumb to anybody with any knowledge of this but

I've started doing some weights recently and sometimes the day after my muscles are sore and then other days they're not. What I'm wondering is do the days they're not sore mean that I havn't pushed myself enough the day before and so no muscle tissue has been tore and so there will have no gains from the session?

Or, is the soreness just a result of say starting a new routine or exercise that the body isn't used to and even if I don't feel it the day after muscle is still being built?

Not a dumb question at all.

Soreness is hard to define, and can be different for different people.

What I will say is that it depends on:
    1) What weights you moved. If the weight is too much, then yes, it can cause soreness
    2) How you moved them: Generally, eccentric movements cause soreness. e.g. in a squat lowering yourself to the floor is eccentric, coming back up is concentric.
    3) Diet, sleep and stress - all these things play a role in recovery and whehter you feel sore.

There's others but this should help you.

Give us an idea by answering colms questions above and we should be able to shed a little bit of light on it...

Really heavy squat sessions and very little sleep usually leave me sore...

Are you doing any stretching? Useful link below....

Not eating enough proper food can also cause this soreness.
