As far as I'm concered, you can't go wrong with a Fiesta. The one I had was a 94 but for 3K you could probably get an 01-02. I think a lot of the older ones are 1.25L which is a decent engine for a car it's size and won't kill you on tax and insurance.

I can fully understand your feelings on Micras but not so much Fiestas. I loved my Fiesta but had a lend of a Micra for a couple of days and didn't enjoy it at all. Not that it was a bad car but I didn't like the fact that I was driving a Micra and I think people are more inclined to bully you on the road in one. As for Polos, I also had a lend of one for a short and liked it. It was about as comfortable as you can get from a car that size and it performed well but it was a 1.4, however there is a 1.2 which can't be much different.

I had plenty of problems with my last car which is why I've had a lend of so many different cars.

I can't understand people slating fiestas in this size and price category. Yet they think there is some sort of badge appeal with driving a polo, which is a grim car at best.

Indeed. The only think to be said against the Fiesta (1995 - 2002) is the interior space which is a bit limited, even the old 1.3 OHV engine had it's advantages when it comes to reliability and maintenance. While the polo couldn't be described as bad in any respect but there's no area in which it excels either. People have this notion about VW's holding their value but I know quite a few people who've got a shock at trading in time, the retail prices on the forecourts may be high, but the trade ins aren't great, worst of both worlds really.

can't go wrong with your good old Toyota. Starlet (cannot recommend highly enough if you dont mind the image thing - I have a 97 1.3 with 46k on it, got it for 1300, drives perfectly and does 45 mpg) or yaris.

I always liked the Saxo. Good little car, and I reckon you could have that one for your 3k budget.

No problems, I've moved the pictures to this thread (Post a pic of your modified car) in the modified cars forum.

Everyone else - don't be assholes. If it's not your cup of tea, then leave it alone. Let's get back on topic.

the only cars i like really from the 1.0 to 1.3 are clios, colts and puntos. but fiat wouldn't be the most reliable. I think corsas micras and fiesta look terrible
so i wouldnt be really interested in paying 3k for something i dont like.

I think a mini is a great idea - really good fun, even with a 1.0 engine. A clio is a good bet as well, pretty nippy cars and seem to come well equipped.

Well if you said that at the start you would have gotten some useful advice from the outset as there's a multitude of cars people could suggest. There was a thread the other day here with someone chosing between a colt and clio - familiarise yourself with the seach button and you'll get all you need there

Hung over today? That Mini is a great car for the price and it's within your price range and engine range.

If you don't know what you want and with no helpful indications on what type cars you like, then be prepared if we suggest other cars than what you may have thought possible.

Stop shooting peoples suggestions down and do some research on the various car sites out there.

Im not complaining about anyones suggestions, im asking for them and giving my opinion back. I appreciate everyone's inputs. as for calling u a clown it wasnt cause u suggested the mini its because you were talking about a bmw clone to impress girls or something, thats not very helpful and not what im interested in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Ok, back on track. A suggestion would be to use this search engine to find cars in your range and then get feedback on them. That way we know what cars you do like and can give input on them and similar brands http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/
What cars do you have experience driving? Any particular favourite?

Btw, sorry about the BMW clone joke. It's what a lot of new buyers want and it seemed that it what you wanted too.

I'm nearly sure that mini belonged to a girl I work with - she sold it a few weeks ago because it was a heap, was costing her a fortune & left her standing on the side of the road at least once a week. She sold it to a young guy and it broke down as he drove it away... not what he was expecting... He got rightly screwed, but if its the same car, its not worth a third of what its advertised for...

There are good reasons for buying newer cars... more advanced suspension, safety features, better brakes... My advice is to stay away from old cars unless they are a hobby...

Get over to donedeal have search for clios colts and puntos, and see what 3k get you.

The Polo is ugly, underpowered and frankly unreliable. Also, the people who drive them tend not to open the bonnet under any circumstances. Avoid. Good cars in in your range would be Saxo, Clio, Starlet, Corolla, Colt, Punto Mk2. Since you're ignoring the most reliable cars out there there you really don't have that much choice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 96 ✭✭|MarK|

seriously consider a starlet then as toyota are the best cars and it wont give you trouble , STAY AWAY FROM PUNTOS unless you plan on doing the head gasket every couple of thousend miles,
