hello.. my family (my husband and our 2 kids) are in the process of moving to Galway City we were wondering if anyone could recommend some areas/ neighborhoods worth checking out near the city centre. We've had friends mention Salthill, knocknacarra, newcastle, renmore and Rahoon. not familiar with these areas- what can someone tell us about them? any ideas or suggestions is very much appreciated! Thanks in advance..msngrin.gif

    Hi,

you will probably get more suitable answers if you supply more info such as work location (if any), childrens ages, hobbies, rental/purchase budget, family transport (1 or 2 cars) etc.

    Best of luck!

Rahoon is closest to the city centre with good transport links.... Salthill is not far out either and has plenty of amenities as it is it's own town strictly speaking..... Knocknacarra is further out and you really need a car if you live there as local amenities are fairly spread out..... Renmore and Newcastle are fairly similiar in that they are both fairly quiet residential areas with a lot of mature families. Newcastle has a sizeable student population due to it's proximity to NUIG. Renmore is nearer to the city centre. As Andrea B said, a lot depends on your situation with work, cars etc....

Thanks so much for your time... work will take us into city centre and sometimes to the universities, our kids are 10 and 12yrs old, we'd like to let a house (semi or detached) and budgeting for up to 1300 a month. As far as hobbies we love music, movies, books, the outdoors (is shopping a hobby ;)).
We'd like to be close to city centre but we'd also like to be in a place that's good/safe for our kids. Again, thanks for your help so far!

Can recommend the area immediately east of the river, Castlegar parish and towards Menlo.... the Dyke Rd. is like a driveway into town ;)... 10 mins cycle in and quiet other than rush hour

    1300 a month

You'll have a no shortage of choice in this climate!

Close to city, I would second the Menlo suggestion or Salthill.

These are both developments just off eyre square on foster street

Foster court is quite a large estate with 200+ houses and is very quite with large open grass areas

Im currently renting in foster place which is a small square of about 25 houses which is secure, (theres keycard controlled gates that allow access to the square) its quite nice with plenty of familys my rent is 1056/month

With a budget like that you'll get a lovely place anywhere you want really. Have you decided on schools yet? Might make some difference.

Check out the Resources sticky. It has info on where to find accommodation and other things.

Salthill's a pretty safe bet if you can find something nice there. Some pretty nice parts, you've got the prom near your doorstep, within walking distance of the city (30mins tops), and more importantly, you're on the right side of the city for the school run.

Of those places your friends have mentioned, viz:

Salthill, knocknacarra, newcastle, renmore and Rahoon

Renmore is on the opposite side of the city from NUIG, but right beside GMIT. Good public transport to the city, and quite walkable too. Not so many schools on that side of the city though, so getting in there could be more challenging.

Rahoon and Knocknacarra are mostly fine, but they do have some slightly dodgy bits. (Ok .. some bits are more that slightly ... some are less ;)

Ignore the crazy talk on some other posts here about Castlepark and Ballinfoile. It's, umm, nowhere near where you're looking for.

Menlo/Castlegar is a more rural aspect, with no public transport (when your kids are slightly older, do you want to have to drive them to every single thing they do?) Menlo is close to NUIG as the crow flies, but you have to go over the bridge, which can slow things down a bit.

Salthill is fine: good public transport, walkable to town, established neighbourhood with lots of amenities. The Claddagh is even closer. Newcastle and Shantalla are close to town too, some parts of them are student neighbourhoods, and parking can be a challenge due to the university and hospital. Taylors Hill and Kingston are good neighborhoods too.

Oranmore is a long way from town. I think JustMary has summed it up pretty well.

Newcastle or Shantalla would have the best mix of being decent neighborhoods and close to town and NUIG. Salthill is nice too but a little further out from town.

Look, Salthill/Knocknacarra a safe bet to live (even if they have to import footballers) and so is Renmore and parts of Newcastle. Tirellan, Ballinfoyle, Castlepark, parts of Mervue, Doughiska to be avoided at all costs. Enjoy your stay in Galway.

Stay away from the east side and all will be well.

You'd swear some of the areas you have mentioned are war zones!

I suggest you check daft.ie and Advertiser, and look around the area when you view the house.

Visit the city beforehand, drive around during the day and the late evening and get the feel for the place and the areas you mentioned.

Out of all the areas mentioned I'd say Knocknacarra is the most suburban, but also most boring. In my opinion.
One more thing, the bridges over the river Corrib are massive bottlenecks. Try to live on the same side of the river as you work.
Also live close to the school your kids will attend, morning traffic is a major headache here.
