Help my muffin top

    Hi guys,

I am in the process of trying to loose at least a stone in weight. I was originally 12stone. I would love to be 11. Am 5ft 7''. The last time I weighted myself was 2 weeks ago and Id lost 3-4lbs. Its more the way my clothes fit that I am interested in than the scales.

So, unfortunately I am predisposed to gaining weight in my mid-riff/abdominal section. It is the first place weight goes on, and is the last place it leaves. I can see differences in clothes in other parts of my body, but my abdomen is still much the same.

Can anyone please point me to any good exercises that I could do? Or am I to settle for a pudgy mid-riff? It seems to be more my lower abdomials than anything else. Just wont bleeding budge.

    Thanks!

No you don't have to settle for a pudgy mid riff. A toned torso is built in the kitchen. Post your daily diet.

It's all about the diet. You cannot spot reduce. Post a sample daily diet like from your food log.

Plenty of protein, plenty of healty fats Watch the carbs i.e no wheat flour or refined carbs. Eggs, oily fish , greens greens greens, bit of fruit, plain yogurt, lean meats, unsalted nuts, some wholegrains.

    'abs are made in the kitchen;

you can do all the cunches in the world but you will be only working you abs( its all one muscle) which are covered in a layer of fat: crunches will not get rid of the fat on your tummy.

Cardio: interval training is effective. Since your in UL i would recommend going to a spin class. Good interval training there or running or if you cant run, work your way up by jogging/walking.
If you are going to use weights focus on compund movements like squats etc.

    Thanks for the replies.

So basically no matter what exercises I do at the moment, my abs wont get any better because of the layer of fat?

Is there anything I can do exercise-related at all?

Am not looking for rock hard abs, just something to tone up the muscle/skin.

My lower abs (I think most women have problems down here) are looking disporportionate to the rest of me. Although I am getting smaller slowly, I would go so far to say that I look a few months pregnant. My arms, legs, bum etc look toned - just that area is driving me mad.

there is no such thing as toning in a way, but it usually refers to a combination of low (ish) body fat and some muscle tone .. if you work your abs then great, but you may end up looking worse (sorry!) as the muscle will only expand your mid-section if your body fat stays the same ...

you need to sort your diet out, since you wont post it up then im guessing that where the problem lies .. most people wont ever achieve visible abs with a poor diet, unless you can devote your life to the gym! overall, crunches, sit ups, planks, good diet and enough cardio so, post your current diet and people may be able to offer some advice ...

what are these foods like, as I too have this problem:

    brown bread
    real butter
    poatoes
    salmon - fresh
    carrots
    turnips
    hard boiled eggs
veg soup - homemade with salt, pepper and stock
    chicken fillets
    steak - fillet

Ive a feeling ill be told to cut out the real butter but the fact of the matter is that thats the one thing I wont do. I personally believe that the spreads wind up worse for you.

How bad is coke?? I have an addiction to it which is under control at the moment, about one can a month now, but could easily drink 2-3 a week if allowed?

I do eat chocolate bars, maybe a fox's classic every 2 days,

I cant eat greens as I have been advised against it by my doc -IBS, but I am taking a fibre suppliment.

I am 5'5", 8.5 stone and in ok shape except for the mid section :(

I have taken up running in the past 4 months, but of late am finding it hard to be dedicated due to work commitments.

Lastly, sorry OP for hijacking your thread!

    any help?

none of those are VERY bad but that doesnt mean 5 potatoes along with a load of butter will do you any favours ... you just need to watch portion size and move as much as possible .. is your docs advice your only reason for avoiding greens? coke is one of the WORST things you could consume if trying to get rid of a muffin top, one can a month wont matter if it is ONLY 1 can!! chocolate bar every 2 days is a bad idea unless you are doing intense exercise or you are willing to wait much longer for a lean mid-section

    hey,

yeah only reason for not eating greens is docs advice. before that I was eating them every day, love them actually, and I find it a shame to have to give them up.

Sorry Cork, but I find you a bit rude.
I keep a food diary (as ULstudent pointed out) so I will not be duplicating posts ok? Is that ok with you? Are you sure? Wouldnt want to insult you.

I'm not sure why you are adopting this attitude when you come on here asking for advice and then get irate when someone tells you what you don't want to hear. All the best

Eh yeah i can see people falling over themselves to help you. Corkcomp gives plenty of good advice on this forum and could do without your little psychotic fit. Perhaps go back to FD forum were every post is "GO YOU :):):):):)" if that's what you want to hear.

The way I see it you were looking to reduce fat around your mid section without cutting crap out of your diet and your just p'd off at people telling it how it is, I.e. There is no magic exercise and it's down to good diet and relatively low levels of body fat. I can't see anything rude about my previous replies and I hope you achieve your goals but given your attitude I won't hold my breath lol

dellas1979 - Corkcomp is giving you good direct feedback on your diet. Take it onboard.

exactly - why is it some (women) more than guys are just asking BUT really just do not want to know - hence the huge threads on lipotrim, ho many weightwatchers points are in etc

Also OP you have not really outlined your current training progam and diet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,394 ✭✭✭Transform

sorry scratch that just had a look at your food diary - there are wayyyyyyy to many obvious mistakes you are making every day and if you think you need to be in the gym for 2hrs most days to get in great shape then you are mistaken.

Make sure you are using an effective training program and lower ab exercises are not the answer - a decent program is.

Finally, to get to where you want to be you have to get with the detail, the small things that you are doing thats holding you back from where you want to be. Also, get body fat tested every 2-4 weeks otherwise its just guess work.

    All the best

 I don't see how corkcomp was being rude!

If you want people to help you, you have to help them. It's a lot easier for you to post your typical daily diet up on the thread on which you are seeking advice, than to expect everyone who is offering to help you to go trawling through your post history to look for the information.

I have a similar problem with the whole tummy area, I find alcohol is definitely the worst thing for it. I don't even drink much alcohol, but when I give it up for even just 2-3 weeks I see a massive difference in my stomach!

I said in my opinion that cork poster was being rude and I addressed that poster. If any of you have a problem, report the post. I do think that that poster was being rude and unhelpful, read it what you may - I dont care.

I asked for help, not criticism.

 It looks like you need help alright, try the PI forum.

Can we get back on topic or close the thread please.

Dave your comments are just plain stupid. Not even whitty.

I addressed cork poster, you addressed me now lets finish this.

Again can we get back on topic as other people have said they have the same problem or close the thread.

I am not trying to be witty. I enjoy reading this forum so many helpful posters and corkcomp happens to be one of them, he offered you sound advice and you act like that? Are you going to treat the next person to help you with such contempt? I said my piece good luck with the rest of it...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,128 ✭✭✭dellas1979

Well what did you mean to achieve by posting the above so Dave? Saying someone needs to visit PI is rich coming from someone who posts a comment like yours. In effect you are just as bad as me and we are all as bad as each other.

Maybe you did (and thats great) think his advice was the bees knees but I didnt - I thought it very sarcastic.

I cant spell this any clearer.

Can we please get back on topic.

Ok, here's some helpful advice. Well, at least in my opinion it is. Take from it what you wish.

A good diet is the key to weight loss. Everyone will agree on this point.
A good diet consists of decent food, and correct portion size. Too much of anything is bad for you. Work out your daily calorie needs and stick to it. Yours will be quite low as it is based on lean weight. (see stickies at the top for how to work this out)
In general terms, most people could improve their diet by reducing carbs (esp sugars) and increasing protein, while keeping fats in line too obviously. And by using fresh foods more often, frozen meals are a bad idea.

As for the foods you listed,
brown bread - Better than white, but still mostly carbs
real butter - avoid, use any spreads sparingly
poatoes - very calorie dense, opt for other veg,
salmon - good source of protein and source source of require fats
carrots - i fine them great as a sub for potatos, can be used to make nice spice wedges
turnips - again, lower in cals and carbs than potatoes
hard boiled eggs - good source of protein, any type (scrambled, boiled, poached etc)
    veg soup - generally good
chicken fillets - source of protein, don't use skin
steak - not as good as chicken, but ok from time to time, trim fat off

Above all, weigh food, get to know how many cals various fresh food items contain. Spend soem time on http://www.nutritiondata.com/

Also, if you are looking for advice, esp on a sensitive subject, (which this appears to be) then lose the attitude and listen to people. Nothing corkcomp said was rude, and I certainly can't see where he was sarcastic. I honestly agree 100% with what he said.
Coke is a terrible thing to drink, if you must go for diet or zero.
Bars are also terrible as a snack, they don't fill you and lead to extra cals in your daily intake. Have some fruit instead. If they aren't in the house you can eat them.

    +1.
