I was talking to one of the organisers this evening on the blower and they said its quite hilly, calls for some reconnaisance me thinks

I was talking to one as well, he said if you could do the SK 100 then you could do the RT130.

This still stands from the other rebel tour thread by the way.

Thinking of doing this. Not sure to do the 60 or 130 yet though. If the 130 is very hilly my legs wont make it.

Highest peak is <400m. depends on the climb up to it.

Does anyone know if you can register on the morning?
I had a look on the website and it mentions a closing date of Sept 9th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,606 ✭✭✭Jumpy

Its an online closing date of the 9th. I think there is an additional charge if you book later. But dont quote me on that, give the organiser a call.

Planning to do (attempt) the 130k version of this too. Had my first cycle in 3 months Saturday and was lucky to get home (thanks to ajk24 for dragging me around the last 30k). Very poor showing by me. Have brother on call incase I have to abandon next Sunday!
It would be great if anyone who knows the actual route of the 130k version could plot it on mapmyrun or something like that. The map that the organisers have provided lacks enough detail to be able to do it from that easily.
As for registering for the cycle on the day, I assume you can but don't know for definate so no real help to you. Sorry.

Guys, I will be doing the 130 quite slowly (I did the SK100 in 4hr 15) You wont be the only ones if you want to try the full distance.

Folks I'm new to this game. Hoping to go for the 60k on Sunday. Furthest I have done in training is 50k (in 2 hours). Did the Musgraves Triathlon (cycle leg) last Saturday (33k) and now I'm hooked. I'm not daft enough to even attempt the longer run, but do you think its feasible for someone who has never done 60k in his life to suddenly try his hand at it? I would usually cycle around 120k per week as it is.

Easily man, there will be groups of cyclists, when you sit behind a group you get dragged along with them. If you lose one group, just stick to another :)

Of course you should lead occasionally of course *cough*

    Message received!!;)
Does anyone have any idea how hilly the 60k route is? I'm not familiar with the area.

Also sorry if this is a dumb question but what is the norm with the food stations, I mean is it considered perfectly acceptable on these spins to stop for a good rest etc on the food stops or is it all very professional and you grab a flying banana on route? I'm really sorry if this question is annoying but I havent done one of these events before, all I ever do is head out of my driveway and go left or right so have no experience of organised events.

it's a leisure ride so you do what ever suits you. I personally take short breaks so i don't cool down or get stiff legs but each to their own. The best thing for you is to just do it, your opposition is yourself and not the other riders.

I was on a spin from cork city to macroom and back last saturday and ended up at the very back of your triathlon. Got a free drink aswell just past macroom at the last water station which saved me a few quid.

Saturday was my first long cycle and i did 75km in 3 hours, it was pretty flat though.

Im going to do the 60km on sunday just to introduce myself to the game. I would love to do the 130km but i know it would be pushing it too much as im just starting on the bike again.

Give me a shout if u want to spin off together at the beginning or whatever.

Dr. Millah, what route did you go to Macroom on? I can't believe that there's a route in Cork that can be described as "flat"!

The main Killarney road is actually pretty flat all the way to Macroom and a bit beyond. It's about as good as it gets in Cork - just a few small rises here and there. When I'm heading out that way however I take the road via Dripsey, Coachford and Carrigadrohid. It's a fair bit more lumpy but much prettier and safer.

Some people crack on but most participants in these things stop for a decent while to have something to eat and drink, etc.

Nadd is a regular enough training run for me. It's not at all steep - just a long and often windy drag that probably suits the bigger lads. It's certainly a lot easier than Mahon Falls. I've only done the Butter Road once before. There were some steepish sections closer to Millstreet alright but other than that I don't remember much about it which probably means it wasn't too bad (even though I missed the SK Tour this year I have no difficulty remembering Mahon Falls from last year!).

The thing is though that apart from these 'feature climbs' you shouldn't underestimate the rest of the route. There are very few stretches of level road in North Cork. It's the sort of terrain where you're always either going up or down and this tends to knock it out of you much more than a climb proper.

I started on the lee fields. Uploaded the route, and i could send the file on if you wanted. Its a fairly nice cycle that gets you out of the city fast.

Still on for forming a slower group for the 130km. There are two of us at present. PM me if you want to meet up at the start.

Thanks a lot for that, very good of you. I'm in UCC so I think I'll try that route some morning, out the Western Roads and past the lee fields. I had'nt even realised you could get to Macroom that way, I had always associated Macroom with the rather hilly and dangerous route via Kerrypike (I think!).

As regards the Rebel Tour, has anyone got any postal confirmation from them? All I have is an e-mail from Active.ie confirming payment, but it tells me nothing about the event or any reference numbers and so on. In fact, so far, apart from being an An Post sponsered cycle, it's organisation bears no resemblance whatsoever with that of the SK tour. :(

All i got was an email from Active.ie aswell.

I put the general route into mapmyride, there two good hills alright :) the rest looks ok though.

Do you have this saved Jumpy?
I don't mind climbing but I like to know what's ahead of me.

Apparently the first 30km of the 60km are flat, and then there's one very low ranking climb, which according to the organisers "can barely be classified as a climb".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 238 ✭✭ajk24

received a confirmation letter on monday and a text this evening.

here is an approximation to the 130km route.
    http://www.mapmyride.com/ride/ireland/-mallow%2c-cork/205125136244864484
a bit short but it covers the musheramore and nadd climbs. musheramore was a cat 2 in the tour of ireland coming from the other direction. will be a very quick and tricky decent as the surface is quite poor. the climb to nadd isn't very steep but is a nice drag with a great view.

i'll be there for the 9am start with albob. blue and white schull tri club gear and a blue planet-x bike with very un-euro clip on aerobars. not good for the course but can never be bothered to take them off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 70 ✭✭JohnHenry

Here's a link to where the GAA club is in Mallow
    http://www.mallowgaa.com/location.php
Its on the Fermoy side of town, at the northeast end of st joesphs road. There will surely be a few signs up to point people in the right direction, Cant wait for it now, espically since the weather forecast is ok, nadd is not the place to be on a cold windy day!!
The grub is not bad in the clubhouse either if you want to grab a bit after the cycle..

Yeah I'll be the one about 300m behind - red top, red helmet and red face, muttering obscenities to myself.

Actually wait, aldi is about to get 150 of me, lbs 55 and i'm starting off road in the next couple of weeks, i love this too much.
