Been on the dole since January and I finally got a job today :):):)

For ages I had only been applying for relatively well paid jobs but I finally had to ditch my pride and apply for a lower paid position. I'm taking a 55% cut in salary from my last position but at least it will cover my mortgage, bills and food. There'll be absolutely zero money for fun but I can live without it for the moment. Anyway, I just wanted to say that if you're unemployed, don't be an idiot like I was for so long. Swallow your pride and apply for everything. Persistence does pay off eventually.

Fair play to you, takes a lot of swallowing of pride to do that. I've started to apply for jobs that are about the same cut aswell. congrats on the job.

Well done OP! I think the best thing is to apply for *any* job that you are suitably qualified for: I myself have a masters / professional qualification but honestly didn't think twice about applying for retail / sales assistant / general admin / office type jobs. After all, any job is better than being unemployed. thankfully I have something now in retail - only temporary, but still I'm not complaining! It's a great feeling to just be able to switch off from the constant checking of job sites, and from constantly doing cover letters / cvs up.

I know a few people who have the attitude of 'oh I'm still looking, there's nothing in my sector' and I can't understand it whatsoever. They are looking for high end IT / finance jobs and nothing else, even if they also have waitressing / cafe / shop experience which could get them a job - even as a stop-gap to tide them over.

Cheers. I got lucky in fairness. The job was only advertised on the Fas website so the number of applicants was way down compared to positions that are advertised on the bigger job websites like IrishJobs etc.

Good luck with the search. I hope you find something soon.

Yeah that was really starting to get me down to be honest. Most places don't even reply to say thanks for the CV. Having absolutely no contact or feedback does become very disheartening after a while.

Thats great. I also applying for anything at all but not luck yet. Hopefully something will come up soon.

This is so, so true. It takes hours to tailor a Cv and cover letter properly. It's not like you expect an individually tailored rejection response or anything, but how much effort can it be to send out a generic email to say a post has been filled once a candidate has been selected? It would at least bring some closure and you then know you can cross it off the list / move on. On the very rare occasions I did actually get a rejection email back, i have to say the company went up a lot in my estimation. Such a small thing can actually make a difference!

    Also got a job

I got one particular rejection letter saying the post was filled yet two weeks later is was still advertised. I e-mailed nicely asking if it had been filled or not. The person offered it could have accepted it then changed their mind. I got a bitchy reply along the lines of "As stated before the position has been filled". I felt like replying "If it has been filled it shouldn't be still advertised!!!".

Yeah this is a very real problem at the moment. So many advertised jobs are dead ends and HR departments are completely stressed with all of the enquiries (no excuse for rudeness though). Some of the bigger jib websites need a good clear out.

I spoke to a HR girl who works for a major tech company the other day. They have eight positions vacant and they've had over a thousand applicants. It's crazy!!

It's very time-comsuming. A lot of companies don't necessarily have a HR department, or person, and it could be a manager or a member of staff that is looking after the applications. This would be in addition to their own job, which would prob be very busy if the company were actively seeking to hire additional people.

While each individual person can write up a cv, a company may receive hundreds, if not thousands, of applicants. The time it would take to give a reply (even if generic, to say "thanks, but no thanks" for just the CV) would not be worth a companies time or money.

You do have a point and I understand that circumstances differ from company to company. Having said that, it would also be extremely easy to setup a specific e-mail account just to receive applications with an automated response that says your CV has been received. Then when the post has been filled you just send a single e-mail from that account to everyone that applied originally. Any IT department could set this up extremely quickly with minimal effort.

Isn't it just a simple mailmerge exercise though??? A few seconds to write the email and send it to the full list of unsuccessful applicants in one go? As I said, I wouldn't expect an individual / personalised email for a second, as I fully understand the time commitment it would entail.

Congratulations to you both. It is nice to hear some good news for a change. I was out of work myself for almost 5 months & it can be soul destroying. It's always important to remember that there will be light at the end of the tunnel.

    congrats on finding work.
how did yous manage to get around the whole being over qualified perception?
i too have applied for retail work and entry level positions but have not got any feedback barring one who said i had no experience of the hotel sector, and yes this was for an entry level role, very frustrating.
tried to explain my skills were transferable but got no reply.
feeling like i should just blatantly lie on my cv now.

I also found out yest I got a job!!!
Happy days...I'm nearly 2 years out of work. Left where I was working to go back and do a masters for a year and have been looking for a job since I finished last oct.

I'm going back to where I worked before....after a long hard conversation with myself....I just had to take the offer.
I left the place on an extremely great wage and now i'm going back to an extremely poor wage (it is a diff role with more responsibility!!). I'm just happy that I'm finally going to get back into a good routine and a healthy frame of mind :)

cannot wait to collect my last dole payment from that biatch in my local post office :D

I was unemployed around 5 months. Worst 5 months ever :(. Yh recently finished a degree and was applying for customer support \ it support jobs and got the whole over qualified bull. To be honest I dont mind applying for jobs and getting no response or applying for a job an getting the we picked someone else response. I really hate when they say your over qualified. I think though when you apply for entry level jobs with college or work experience in a different sector companies think that you will leave as soon as something better comes along. So they give you the over qualified line.

Hopefully in a few months this thread can be edited to Live Register - a couple of thousand!

Well done to all! Its great to hear positive stories! I too have been unemployed since January and have been applying for roles with salaries well below what I was used to. I have also applied for lots of roles I am over qualified for because I just want to work, even if it means I only earn a little bit more than the dole!
The most soul destroying part for me is making the effort to apply for jobs whether its online or printed applications and getting NO response or being told I am over qualified!
Anyway, back to the good news, congratulations again guys!

Congrats to everyone who got a job it was lovely to read. Like others here I'm looking for work, haven't been told Im over qualified but I know that some jobs I've gone for I am over qualified, I mainly get no response which irks me but I know that companies are inundated, however, I know some companies have set up generic automated emails that state if you haven't heard by such and such a date then you have not been successful, which to my mind is fair enough, I just wish all companies would do that because it is so, so, so easy to set up an automated e-mail that responds to each new job e-mail.
Hopefully I'll soon be off the scrap heap but its lovely to hear good news. Well done all of you.

I have seen a few more jobs advertised in my area as well (FINANCE) I was forced to leave my company at the beginning of July 09, so i have only been unemployed 2 months and a half, but about 5 weeks ago I got a call from an agency in Cork saying that there is a new company moving to Ireland and if I would be intrested in going for an interview with this company in Dublin, so i did, all went well the guys said i did very well and that they were impressed, the agency rang me and said we should know in about 1 week if you got the job, waited one week...no answer...mailed her and she said we dont know what is happening at the moment as they are busy with recruitment so silly me i thought ok, i had a holiday planned so i went away for 2 weeks came back and so 5 weeks passed...got an email yday saying that i was not successful as they decided to take someone internally.....my worst mistake was that for all that time i didnt apply for any other jobs....i only came back at the weekend and i started applying and to my surprise i got some positive feedback from my applications...its a bit far...but at least im hoping i got the job, and i defo wotn be making the same mistake again waiting and waiting....i was so upset that 5 weeks were waisted...and i am sure that the recruitment agency knew damn well....im not slagging all recruitment agencies as some are pretty good....but the one in Cork was just horrible with letting u know what is happening with ur application after ur interview.....

I recently had an interview I had to travel a very, very long distance to get to. They only interview a small number of people and I got a general rejection e-mail. I then asked for feedback and got no reply!

Got offered a job aswell today after 2 months out of work - yeah! Less than I was on before but better than the dole.

Must say that I think the FAS website is way better than any recruitment agency, most jobs are submitted directly by employers so at least you know they are getting your CV. You need to check it a few times a day because they are always adding jobs to it. I was so sick of being fobbed off by recruitment agencies

about a 20% paycut from the similar position I was made redundant from in June, so it's not much more than minimum wage but I am just delighted to have a job.

Congratulations and fair play to the rest of you for not despairing and keeping up the search.

Have any of you found that certain companie(s) on a well known jobs forum claim to be looking for staff but when you ring the actual company they say the job is no longer available, yet it it’s still being advertised on the site and no doubt they are still receiving hundreds of cv’s.

My son who’s been unemployed for the past couple of months complained to the company in question and within days the job vacancy was removed from the site but to return a week or so later.

He rang them again recently and asked to speak to the MD and he told him that yes they were recruiting.

    Confusing eh . . .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68 ✭✭Blonde27

Well I know personally speaking that on certain Jobs forums, you can not take down a job from the forum until about 12 days have past. Its very annoying especially if the role is nto available any more
